Mass Concentration and Mineralogical Characteristics of Aerosol Particles Collected at Dunhuang During ACE-Asia

Measurements were performed in spring 2001 and 2002 to determine the characteristics of soil dust in the Chinese desert region of Dunhuang, one of the ground sites of the Asia-Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment （ACE-Asia）. The mean mass concentrations of total suspended particle matter during the spring of 2001 and 2002 were 317μg m^-3 and 307μg m^-3, respectively. Eleven dust storm events were observed with a mean aerosol concentration of 1095μg m^-3, while the non-dusty days with calm or weak wind speed had a background aerosol loading of 196μg m^-3 on average in the springtime. The main minerals detected in the aerosol samples by X-ray diffraction were illite, kaolinite, chlorite, quartz, feldspar, calcite and dolomite. Gypsum, halite and amphibole were also detected in a few samples. The mineralogical data also show that Asian dust is characterized by a kaolinite to chlorite （K/C） ratio lower than 1 whereas Saharan dust exhibits a K/C ratio larger than 2. Air mass back-trajectory analysis show that three families of pathways are associated with the aerosol particle transport to Dunhuang, but these have similar K/C ratios, which further demonstrates that the mineralogical characteristics of Asian dust are different from African dust.

Fucosylation is a common glycosylation type in pancreatic cancer stem cell-like phenotypes

AIM: To evaluate/isolate cancer stem cells(CSCs) from tissue or cell lines according to various definitions and cell surface markers. METHODS: Lectin microarray analysis was conducted on CSC-like fractions of the human pancreatic cancer cell line Panc1 by establishing anti-cancer drug-resistant cells. Changes in glycan structure of CSC-like cells were also investigated in sphere-forming cells as well as in CSC fractions obtained from overexpression of CD24 and CD44. RESULTS: Several types of fucosylation were increased under these conditions, and the expression of fucosylation regulatory genes such as fucosyltransferases, GDP-fucose synthetic enzymes, and GDP-fucose transporters were dramatically enhanced in CSC-like cells. These changes were significant in gemcitabineresistant cells and sphere cells of a human pancreatic cancer cell line, Panc1. However, downregulation of cellular fucosylation by knockdown of the GDP-fucose transporter did not alter gemcitabine resistance, indicating that increased cellular fucosylation is a result of CSC-like transformation. CONCLUSION: Fucosylation might be a biomarker of CSC-like cells in pancreatic cancer.

Impact of Temperature in Summer on Emergency Transportation for Heat-Related Diseases in Japan

Background： In Japan, the demand for emergency transportation for people with heat-related illness has recently increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between incidents of heat-related illness and the daily maximum temperature. Methods： The daily maximum temperatures in Japan＇s 11 districts over the past 10 years were classified into four categories, with cutoff points at the 50th, 75th, 95th, and higher than 95th percentiles. We then conducted a logistic regression analysis of einergency transportation demand in each temperature category by age group, using the 50th percentile as tile reference category for each area. Results： There were 42,931 cases of emelgency transportation due to heat-related diseases during the study period. Classified by age. 12.5%, 43.4%, and 44.1% of cases involved children, adults, and elderly people, respectively. The analysis showed that the number of cases of emergency transportation for people with heat-related diseases （per 100,000 people; corresponding to a 1.0~C increase in the daily maximum temperature） was 0.016-0.106 among children （24.9-169.9 children required emergency transportation for heat-related diseases）, from 0.013 to 0.059 among adults （19.8 98.2 adults required emergency transportation）, and from 0.045 to 0.159 among elderly persons （30.0 145.4 elderly people required emergency transportation）. The risk was highest for elderly persons, followed by children and finally adults. Cases of emergency transportation due to heat-related illness increased by 2.4-8.9 times when the daily maximum temperature was approximately 1.5℃ above the mean daily maximum temperature. In fact, the daily maximum temperature had a larger effect than the daily relative humidity level oil emergency transportation for people with heat-related diseases. Conclusion： Public health organizations and health-care services should support elderly people and children, two high-risk groups for heat-related diseases.

Risk factors for postoperative stoma outlet obstruction in ulcerativecolitis

BACKGROUND Current medical treatments can achieve remission of ulcerative colitis (UC).Surgery is required when potent drug treatment is ineffective or when coloncancer or high-grade dysplasia develops. The standard procedure is restorativeproctocolectomy (RPC) with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, commonly performedas two- or three-stage RPC with diverting ileostomy. Postoperative stoma outletobstruction (SOO) is frequent, but the causes are not well *** To identify the risk factors for SOO after stoma surgery in patients with *** We retrospectively reviewed the files of 148 consecutive UC patients whounderwent surgery with stoma construction. SOO was defined as small bowelobstruction symptoms and intestinal dilatation just below the penetrating part ofthe stoma on computed tomography. Patients were divided into two groups:Those who developed SOO within 30 d after surgery and those who did *** characteristics, intraoperative parameters, the stoma site, and rectusabdominis muscle thickness were collected. Moreover, we identified the patientswho repeatedly developed SOO. Univariate and multivariate analyses wereperformed to identify risk factors for SOO and recurring *** Eighty-nine patients who underwent two-stage RPC were included betweenJanuary 2008 and March 2020. Postoperatively, SOO occurred in 25 (16.9%)patients after a median time of 9 d (range 2-26). Compared to patients withoutSOO, patients with SOO had a significantly higher rate of malignant tumors ordysplasia (36.0% vs 17.1%, P = 0.032), lower total glucocorticoid dose one monthbefore surgery (0 mg vs 0 mg, P = 0.026), higher preoperative total protein level(6.8 g/dL vs 6.3 g/dL, P = 0.048), higher rate of loop ileostomy (88.0% vs 55.3%, P= 0.002), and higher maximum stoma drainage volume (2300 mL vs 1690 mL, P =0.004). A simplified simulation method based on the FDTD technique that can handle active devices is proposed. This method well suits the electrical crosstalk analysis of multi-channel integrated, opto-electronic mixed modules. We apply this method to an 8-channel integrated super-compact high-sensitivity optical module. The results show good agreement between simulations and measurements.

Ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC)is a process of generating electricity by exploiting the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep *** to the high static and dynamic pressures that are caused by seawater circulation,the stiffened panel that constitutes a seawater tank may undergo a reduction in ultimate *** current paper investigates the design of stiffening systems for OTEC seawater tanks by examining the effects of stiffening parameters such as stiffener sizes and span-over-bay ratio for the applied combined loadings of lateral and transverse pressure by fluid motion and axial compression due to global bending *** ultimate strength calculation was conducted by using the non-linear finite element method via the commercial software known as *** stress and deformation distribution due to pressure loads was computed in the first step and then brought to the second step,in which the axial compression was *** effects of pressure on the ultimate strength of the stiffener were investigated for representative stiffened panels,and the significance of the stiffener parameters was assessed by using the sensitivity analysis *** a result,the ultimate strength was reduced by approximately 1.5%for the span-over-bay ratio of 3 and by 7%for the span-over-bay ratio of 6.
