The offshore Northern shrimp(Pandalus borealis)bottom trawl fishery in eastern Canada currently uses 22 and 28 mm bar spacing Nordmøre grids to limit bycatch from using small mesh ***,a recent rebound of juvenile redfish(Sebastes spp.),that can pass through the grids,has greatly increased *** address this concern,this study investigated the effectiveness of 17 and 15 mm bar spacing Nordmøre grids in a twin-trawl(paired)configuration against the traditional 22 mm bar spacing *** selectivity analyses showed that the 17 and 15 mm grids resulted in no significant reduction in shrimp catch across all length *** 17 mm grid significantly reduced redfish bycatch for all length classes and the 15 mm grid significantly reduced redfish bycatch for individuals larger than 95 mm total *** redfish entered the codend with the experimental grids,however,the overlap in width between redfish and Northern shrimp limits the overall sorting efficiency of the grids,leaving some redfish still vulnerable to capture.

Utilizing machine learning techniques for data-driven diagnosis of high temperature PEM fuel cells is beneficial and meaningful to the system durability. Nevertheless, ensuring the robustness of diagnosis remains a critical and challenging task in real application. To enhance the robustness of diagnosis and achieve a more thorough evaluation of diagnostic performance, a robust diagnostic procedure based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and a new method for evaluation of the diagnosis robustness was proposed and investigated in this work. To improve the diagnosis robustness: (1) the degradation mechanism of different faults in the high temperature PEM fuel cell was first analyzed via the distribution of relaxation time of EIS to determine the equivalent circuit model (ECM) with better interpretability, simplicity and accuracy;(2) the feature extraction was implemented on the identified parameters of the ECM and extra attention was paid to distinguishing between the long-term normal degradation and other faults;(3) a Siamese Network was adopted to get features with higher robustness in a new embedding. The diagnosis was conducted using 6 classic classification algorithms—support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and Naive Bayes employing a dataset comprising a total of 1935 collected EIS. To evaluate the robustness of trained models: (1) different levels of errors were added to the features for performance evaluation;(2) a robustness coefficient (Roubust_C) was defined for a quantified and explicit evaluation of the diagnosis robustness. The diagnostic models employing the proposed feature extraction method can not only achieve the higher performance of around 100% but also higher robustness for diagnosis models. Dynamic image analysis provides an automated evaluation method to determine the size and shape of multiple particles. This method represents a common application for ordinary bulk material. The latest draft of ISO 13322–2:2021 describes the state of the art, but lacks instructions for handling fibrous bulk material. Interlocking fibres complicate the measurement conditions and require a disentanglement of fibrous samples during a pre-dispersion step. A further error source includes the fibre orientation inside the measurement zone of the device. If the thresholding algorithm fails to differentiate between the fibre projection area and the background, a subsequent image optimisation solves the problem. This article addresses the mentioned problems by analysing cotton cellulose and polyacrylonitrile fibres. Besides the execution of a pre-dispersion step, the experiments compare the discrepancies between dry and wet dispersion. Here, the software packages PAQXOS and ImageJ perform the image evaluation. In this case, the wet dispersion setup with a subsequent image evaluation by ImageJ provides comprehensible results.

Gridded global horizontal irradiance(GHI)databases are fundamental for analysing solar energy applications’technical and economic aspects,particularly photovoltaic ***,there exist numerous gridded GHI databases whose quality has been thoroughly validated against ground-based irradiance ***,databases that generate data at latitudes above 65˚are few,and those available gridded irradiance products,which are either reanalysis or based on polar orbiters,such as ERA5,COSMO-REA6,or CM SAF CLARA-A2,generally have lower quality or a coarser time resolution than those gridded irradiance products based on geostationary *** the high-latitude gridded GHI databases,the STRÅNG model developed by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute(SMHI)is likely the most accurate one,providing data across *** further enhance the product quality,the calibration technique called"site adaptation"is herein used to improve the STRÅNG dataset,which seeks to adjust a long period of low-quality gridded irradiance estimates based on a short period of high-quality irradiance *** study introduces a novel approach for site adaptation of solar irradiance based on machine learning techniques,which differs from the conventional statistical methods used in previous *** machine-learning algorithms have been analysed and compared with conventional statistical approaches to identify Sweden’s most accurate algorithms for site *** irradiance data gathered from three weather stations of SMHI is used for training and *** results show that machine learning can substantially improve the STRÅNG model’s ***,due to the spatiotemporal heterogeneity in model performance,no universal machine learning model can be identified,which suggests that site adaptation is a location-dependant procedure.

Jet grouting is one of the most popular soil improvement techniques,but its design usually involves great uncertainties that can lead to economic cost overruns in construction *** high dispersion in the properties of the improved material leads to designers assuming a conservative,arbitrary and unjustified strength,which is even sometimes subjected to the results of the test *** present paper presents an approach for prediction of the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of jet grouting columns based on the analysis of several machine learning algorithms on a database of 854 results mainly collected from different research *** selected machine learning model(extremely randomized trees)relates the soil type and various parameters of the technique to the value of the compressive *** the complex mechanism that surrounds the jet grouting process,evidenced by the high dispersion and low correlation of the variables studied,the trained model allows to optimally predict the values of compressive strength with a significant improvement with respect to the existing ***,this work proposes for the first time a reliable and easily applicable approach for estimation of the compressive strength of jet grouting columns.

Carbon-based solid lubricants are excellent options to reduce friction and wear,especially with the carbon capability to adopt different allotropes *** the macroscale,these materials are sheared on the contact along with debris and contaminants to form tribolayers that govern the tribosystem *** a recently developed advanced Raman analysis on the tribolayers,it was possible to quantify the contactinduced defects in the crystalline structure of a wide range of allotropes of carbon-based solid lubricants,from graphite and carbide-derived carbon particles to multi-layer graphene and carbon *** addition,these materials were tested under various dry sliding conditions,with different geometries,topographies,and solid-lubricant application *** of the initial tribosystem conditions and allotrope level of atomic ordering,there is a remarkable trend of increasing the point and line defects density until a specific saturation limit in the same order of magnitude for all the materials tested.
