Hydrochar and synthetic natural gas co-production for a full circular economy implementation via hydrothermal carbonization and methanation:An economic approach

Herein we study the economic performance of hydrochar and synthetic natural gas coproduction from olive tree *** process entails a combination of hydrothermal carbonization and *** a previous work,we evidenced that standalone hydrochar production via HTC results ***,we propose a step forward on the process design by implementing a methanation,adding value to the gas effluent in an attempt to boost the overall process techno-economic *** different plant capacities were analyzed(312.5,625 and 1250 kg/hr).The baseline scenarios showed that,under the current circumstances,our circular economy strategy in *** analysis of the revenues shows that hydrochar selling price have a high impact on NPV and subsidies for renewable coal production could help to boost the profitability of the *** the contrary,the analysis for natural gas prices reveals that prices 8 times higher than the current ones in Spain must be achieved to reach *** seems unlikely even under the presence of a strong subsidy *** costs analysis suggests that a remarkable electricity cost reduction or electricity consumption of the HTC stage could be a potential strategy to reach profitability ***,significant reduction of green hydrogen production costs is deemed instrumental to improve the economic performance of the *** results show the formidable techno-economic challenge that our society faces in the path towards circular economy societies.

This study presents a rapid and versatile low-cost sample-to-answer system for SArS-CoV-2 *** system integrates the extraction and purification of nucleic acids,followed by amplification via either reverse transcriptionquantitative polymerase chain reaction(rT–qPCr)or reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification(rT–LAmP).By meeting diverse diagnostic and reagent needs,the platform yields testing results that closely align with those of commercial rT-LAmP and rT‒qPCr *** advantages of our system include its speed and *** assay is completed within 28 min,including sample loading(5 min),ribonucleic acid(rNA)extraction(3 min),and rT-LAmP(20 min).The cost of each assay is≈$9.5,and this pricing is competitive against that of Food and Drug Administration(FDA)-approved commercial *** some rNA loss during on-chip extraction is observed,the platform maintains a potential limit of detection lower than 297 *** makes the system particularly useful in environments where centralized laboratories are either unavailable or inconveniently *** key feature is the platform’s versatility,allowing users to choose between rT‒qPCr or rT‒LAmP tests based on specific requirements.

Insights into the hydrogen evolution reaction in vanadium redox flow batteries:A synchrotron radiation based X-ray imaging study

The parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction(HEr)in the negative half-cell of vanadium redox flow batteries(VrFBs)causes severe efficiency ***,a deeper understanding of this process and the accompanying bubble formation is *** benchmarking study locally analyzes the bubble distribution in thick,porous electrodes for the first time using deep learning-based image segmentation of synchrotron X-ray *** large three-dimensional data set was processed precisely in less than one minute while minimizing human errors and pointing out areas of increased HEr activity in *** study systematically varies the electrode potential and material,concluding that more negative electrode potentials of-200 m V *** hydrogen electrode(rHE)and lower cause more substantial bubble formation,resulting in bubble fractions of around 15%–20%in carbon felt ***,the bubble fractions stay only around 2%in an electrode combining carbon felt and carbon *** detected areas with high HEr activity,such as the border subregion with more than 30%bubble fraction in carbon felt electrodes,the cutting edges,and preferential spots in the electrode bulk,are potential-independent and suggest that larger electrodes with a higher bulk-to-border ratio might reduce HEr-related performance *** described combination of electrochemical measurements,local X-ray microtomography,AI-based segmentation,and 3D morphometric analysis is a powerful and novel approach for local bubble analysis in three-dimensional porous electrodes,providing an essential toolkit for a broad community working on bubble-generating electrochemical systems.

Insights into reservoir-triggered landslides development and its influence factors in the Three Gorges reservoir area， China

more than 5000 landslides or potential landslides have been triggered in the Three Gorges reservoir （TGr） area since the impoundment in 2003. Aimed at investigating the reservoir-induced landslides spatiotemporal and size distribution and its influence factors in the TGr by taking 790 landslides as statistical samples. The landslides exhibit significant regional and sub-regional differences in spatially， and numerous landslides occurred at the initial three impoundment stages and the corresponding following 2–3 cycles of reservoir operations， but the landslide frequency decreased dramatically after 2010 in temporally. The relationship between landslide development and topographical， geological as well as hydrological factors were analyzed qualitatively. The reservoir-induced landslides in TGr area exhibit self-organized criticality and the rollover is nearly 2.5×104m2， which could not attribute to the data missing but the coupled influences imposed by affecting factors. Both the double Pareto and inverse gamma functions are more suitable than the power-law function to present the landslide size characteristics. In term of the fitting precious， the adaptability of the inverse gamma function is better if the landslide inventories are limited. The research results provide foundation for the landslide susceptibility maps and hazard risk assessment.

Physical Characteristics Explain Ball-Carrying Capability in Sub-Elite rugby Union Players

Purpose The aims of the present study were two-fold:(i)to investigate the relationship between physical characteristics and the game statistics associated with ball-carrying capability amongst sub-elite rugby union players,and(ii)to predict the level of change in these physical characteristics required to improve the associated game statistic via regression *** Thirty-eight senior professional players(forwards,n=22;backs,n=16)were assessed for body mass(Bm),back squat(BS)single-repetition maximum(1rm)normalised to Bm(1rm/Bm),10 m sprint velocity(S10),10 m sprint momentum(Sm10),and the game statistics from 22 games within the 2019/20 rFU Championship *** relationship between these measures and the predicted level of change in a physical measure required to improve the total number of the associated game statistic by one were assessed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and simple regression *** In forwards,an~11.5%reduction in Bm,an~11.8%improvement in BS 1rm/Bm,or an~11.5%increase in S10 was required to improve the game statistics associated with ball-carrying *** backs,a~19.3%increase in Bm or a~15.6%improvement in Sm10 was *** These findings demonstrate that improvements in lower-body relative strength,acceleration performance,and position-specific alterations in body mass are required to maximise the ball-carrying capability and therefore match outcome of sub-elite rugby union players.
