Functional recovery from central nervous system(CNS)trauma depends not only on axon regeneration or compensatory sprouting of uninjured fibers but also on the ability of newly grown axons to establish functional synapses with appropriate *** several studies have successfully promoted long-distance axonal regeneration in distinct CNS injury models,none of them have resulted in a viable therapeutic approach for patient recovery.A possible reason may be the lack of new synaptogenesis for reestablishing the circuitry lost after ***,we discuss how our understanding of the mechanisms that instruct synapse formation in the injured nervous system may contribute to the design of new strategies to promote functional restoration in traumatic CNS disorders.

Recent observations have demonstrated the capability of mapping the solar coronal magnetic field using the technique of coronal seismology based on the ubiquitous propagating Alfvénic/kink waves through imaging *** established a magnetohydrodynamic model of a gravitationally stratified open magnetic flux tube,exciting kink waves propagating upwards along the *** modeling was performed to synthesize the Fe XIII 1074.7 and 1079.8 nm spectral line profiles,which were then used to determine the wave phase speed,plasma density,and magnetic field with seismology method.A comparison between the seismologically inferred results and the corresponding input values verifies the reliability of the seismology *** addition,we also identified some factors that could lead to errors during magnetic field *** results may serve as a valuable reference for current and future coronal magnetic field measurements based on observations of propagating kink waves.

In comparison to the established twin-screw machines,the application of a planetary roller granulator for continuous operation of melt granulation is a promising alternative based on the unique process *** initial study focused on the material transport during processing as a key driver for the overall ***,the impact of direct process parameters on the residence time distribution was the main *** investigations are complemented in this study by considering the free processing volume,which is defined by the number of planetary spindles applied within a *** impact on the processing conditions is evaluated with respect to the process setting in terms of feed rate and rotation *** results highlight the potential of altering the underlying transport function in planetary roller melt granulation(PRMG)via the investigated direct process and equipment *** impact of the feed rate is lower in comparison,while a higher rotation speed as well as a higher free processing volume promote material ***,a normalization of the determined residence time distribution(RTD)model data was feasible with respect to the process settings and the number of applied planetary spindles in the processing *** demonstrates the key role of the free processing volume in the fundamental mechanisms of material transport and mixing during PRMG.

Electrical tomography is, in certain cases, the most attractive method for real imaging of industrial processes, because of its inherent simplicity, rugged construction of the tomographer and high-speed capability. This paper presents examples illus- trating applications of electrical tomography for imaging fluidized beds, bubble columns and pneumatic conveyors. Electrical tomography opens up new ways for processing, imaging and modelling multi-phase flows as shown by 2D and 3D images illus- trating the various types of flow morphology.

Due to an increased need in hydro-electricity, water storage, and flood protection, it is assumed that a series of new dams will be build throughout the world. The focus of this paper is on the non-probabilistic-based design of new arch-type dams by applying means of robust design optimization (RDO). This type of optimization takes into account uncertainties in the loads and in the material properties of the structure. As classical procedures of probabilistic-based optimization under uncertainties, such as RDO and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), are in general computationally expensive and rely on estimates of the system’s response variance, we will not follow a full-probabilistic approach but work with predefined confidence levels. This leads to a bi-level optimization program where the volume of the dam is optimized under the worst combination of the uncertain parameters. As a result, robust and reliable designs are obtained and the result is independent from any assumptions on stochastic properties of the random variables in the model. The optimization of an arch-type dam is realized here by a robust optimization method under load uncertainty, where hydraulic and thermal loads are considered. The load uncertainty is modeled as an ellipsoidal expression. Comparing with any traditional deterministic optimization method, which only concerns the minimum objective value and offers a solution candidate close to limit-states, the RDO method provides a robust solution against uncertainty. To reduce the computational cost, a ranking strategy and an approximation model are further involved to do a preliminary screening. By this means, the robust design can generate an improved arch dam structure that ensures both safety and serviceability during its lifetime.

Over the last two decades,co-located seismic and magnetotelluric(MT) profiles provided fundamental geophysical data sets to image the Australian *** their complimentary nature,the data are processed and often interpreted separately without common processes in *** here qualitatively compare 2 D resistivity inversion models derived from MT and seismic reflection profiles across a region of Archean-Proterozoic Australia to address the causes of variations in seismic response and anomalous conductivity in the *** find that there exists a spatial association between regions of low reflectivity in seismic sections and low resistivity in co-located2 D MT modelled *** relationships elucidate possible signatures of past magmatic and fluid-related *** on their diffuse or discrete character,we hypothesize these signatures signify fossil melting of the crust due to mafic underplating,magma movement or hydrothermal fluid flow through the *** approach discussed herein is a process-oriented approach to interpretation of geophysical images and a significant extension to traditional geophysical methods which are primarily sensitive to a singular bulk rock property or state.
