shape design of arch dams under load uncertainties with robust optimization

Due to an increased need in hydro-electricity, water storage, and flood protection, it is assumed that a series of new dams will be build throughout the world. The focus of this paper is on the non-probabilistic-based design of new arch-type dams by applying means of robust design optimization (RDO). This type of optimization takes into account uncertainties in the loads and in the material properties of the structure. As classical procedures of probabilistic-based optimization under uncertainties, such as RDO and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), are in general computationally expensive and rely on estimates of the system’s response variance, we will not follow a full-probabilistic approach but work with predefined confidence levels. This leads to a bi-level optimization program where the volume of the dam is optimized under the worst combination of the uncertain parameters. As a result, robust and reliable designs are obtained and the result is independent from any assumptions on stochastic properties of the random variables in the model. The optimization of an arch-type dam is realized here by a robust optimization method under load uncertainty, where hydraulic and thermal loads are considered. The load uncertainty is modeled as an ellipsoidal expression. Comparing with any traditional deterministic optimization method, which only concerns the minimum objective value and offers a solution candidate close to limit-states, the RDO method provides a robust solution against uncertainty. To reduce the computational cost, a ranking strategy and an approximation model are further involved to do a preliminary screening. By this means, the robust design can generate an improved arch dam structure that ensures both safety and serviceability during its lifetime.

Bioaccessibility and Cell Metabolic Activity studies of Antioxidant Low Molecular Weight Peptides Obtained by Ultrafiltration of <i>α</i>-Lactalbumin Enzymatic Hydrolysates

α-lactalbumin (α-LA) might increase its antioxidant potential after hydrolysis. In particular, low molecular weight (LMW) peptides showed greater antioxidant capacity. Different hydrolysis conditions with Alcalase enzyme were optimized with a composite central design and surface methodology. sample obtained after 0.1% (w/w enzyme:substrate), 60 min hydrolysis, ultrafiltrated with membranes of 3 kDa (named 4 LMW), showed the greatest antioxidant values: 1.574 ± 0.060 and 1.636 ± 0.076 μmolTE/mg of protein for ABTs and ORAC-FL, respectively. sample 4 LMW produced mild ACE inhibition capacity, 22% related to Captopril. 4 LMW was submitted to in vitro gastrointestinal conditions using α-amylase, pepsin, pancreatin and bile-extract;its antioxidant capacity was enhanced by the shorter peptides released, confirmed by sE-HPLC. Antioxidant capacity of digested 4 LMW sample (D 4 LMW) was 1.743 ± 0.086 and 2.542 ± 0.245 μmolTE/mg of protein for ABTs and ORAC-FL, respectively, showing improvement on bioaccessibility. Intestinal cells viability was higher for D 4 LMW.

Application of the Engineering-Geological Conditions in Land-Use Plans in the Petrvald Region(Czech Republic)

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate necessity to inform relevant parties about engineering-geological conditions for various practical purposes, especially including appropriate land-use planning. However, the relationship between relevant geological information and the geological environment is vital for foundation engineering purposes, especially where demanding structures are involved. This information is most conveniently structured when accumulated information concerning engineering-geological zones is utilized. This necessarily includes knowledge of rock workability and also of the pre-Quaternary bedrock, and these characteristics were then related to the current built-up area and future development according to the land-use plans in a case study are from the Petrvald Region （Czech Republic）. The geological environment of area has been severely influenced by anthropogenic effects of deep black coal mining. Results of this research showed that future development should be founded on spoil banks, dumps, and settling basins. According to the land-use plan, this zone occupies 44.9% of the area of interest, and its materials predominantly emanate from mining in the Ostrava-Karvina Coal District. For future foundation structures planned there, it is imperative to consult detailed engineering-geological study. However, attention to and reliance on this necessity is not reflected in the existing land-use plan.

Following New Philanthropy by Network Ethnography:How Did the Varkey Foundation Land and Expand in Latin America?

Diabetes and Periodontal Diseases: An Established Two-Way Relationship

Background: Periodontal diseases (PD), including periodontitis, are chronic inflammatory pathologies caused by bacteria in the subgingival biofilm which affect the periodontal tissues. PD is now considered a localized, chronic, oral infection that activates the host immuno-inflammatory responses both locally and systemically, and also constitutes a source of bacteraemia. It is a known fact that periodontal diseases exercise an important influence on the pathogenesis of numerous systemic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM). In the mid-nineties, sufficient scientific evidence emerged to confirm an association between DM and periodontitis, which then began to be regarded as the sixth complication of DM. Current scientific evidence points to a two-way relationship between DM and periodontal disease, whereby DM is associated with an increase in the incidence and progression of periodontitis, while periodontal infection is associated with worsening glycemic control in diabetic patients. This two-way relationship points to a need to promote oral health in DM patients, and to implement a joint management protocol between endocrinologist and dentist that aims to create adequate conditions for early diagnosis and the effective treatment of both diseases.

A fully automatic fail-safe beam shaping system based on a liquid crystal on a silicon spatial light modulator has been implemented in the high-energy kilowatt-average-power nanosecond laser system *** shaping system corrects for gain nonuniformity and wavefront aberrations of the front-end of the *** beam intensity profile and the wavefront at the output of the front-end were successfully improved by *** beam homogeneity defined by the beam quality parameters was improved two to three *** root-mean-square value of the wavefront was improved more than 10 ***,the shaped beam from the second preamplifier led to improvement of the beam profile at the output of the first main *** shaping system is also capable of creating nonordinary beam shapes,imprinting cross-references into the beam,or masking certain parts of the beam.

Participatory Mapping and Visualization of Local Knowledge:An Example from Eberbach, Germany

A rise in the number of flood-affected people and areas has increased the interest in new methods and concepts that account for this *** are integrated into disaster risk reduction processes through participatory approaches and can provide valuable up-to-date local *** a field study in Eberbach(Baden–Wuerttemberg,Germany)sketch maps and questionnaires were used to capture local knowledge about *** on a previous study on urban flooding in santiago de Chile,the tools were adapted and applied to river flooding in the city of Eberbach,which is regularly flooded by the Neckar River,a major river in southwest *** empirical database of the study comprises 40 participants in the study area and 40 in a control *** of the participants in each group are residents and half are *** sampling was used,and the questionnaires aimed to gather demographic information and explore what factors,such as property,influence the risk perception of the study *** results show that residents identify a larger spatial area as at risk than pedestrians,and owning property leads to higher risk *** flood type influenced the choice of the base maps for the sketch *** river flooding,one map with an overview of the area was sufficient,while for urban flooding a second map with more details of the area also enables the marking of small *** information gathered can complement authoritative data such as from flood *** participatory approach also increases the communication and trust between local governments,researchers,and citizens.

Background studies investigating health-related quality of life(HRQoL)in youth with perinatally acquired HIV(PHIV+)are *** study aimed to compare HRQoL of PHIV+to sociodemographic-matched youth not living with HIV(HIV-),spanish general youth population,and to explore associations between sociodemographic variables,drug consumption,and *** PHIV+youth were randomly selected from CoRIspe database(Cohort of the spanish Pediatric HIV Network).HRQoL was evaluated by *** Thirty-nine PHIV+youth(mean age:23.36 years,sD=3.83)and thirty-nine HIV-youth(mean age:22.97 years,sD=3.80)participated in this ***+obtained lower scores in sF-12 physical health subscale(PCs)than HIV-(P=0.001)and spanish general youth population(P=0.006).PHIV+had lower scores on the mental health subscale(MCs)than the spanish general youth population(Pschool obtained better scores than those were not at ***+youth who had used cocaine and cannabis had lower scores in MCs(P=0.002).Conclusions There is a need for HRQoL management in the associated medical follow-up.
