Assessing the effect of invasive organisms on forests under information uncertainty: The case of pine wood nematode in continental Europe

Forests worldwide are experiencing increasingly intense biotic disturbances;however,assessing impacts of these disturbances is challenging due to the diverse range of organisms involved and the complex interactions among *** particularly applies to invasive species,which can greatly alter ecological processes in their invaded *** we focus on the pine wood nematode(PWN,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus),an invasive pathogen that has caused extensive mortality of pines in East Asia and more recently has invaded southern *** is expected to expand its range into continental Europe with heavy impacts *** the unknown dynamics of PWN in continental Europe,we reviewed laboratory and field experiments conducted in Asia and southern Europe to parameterize the main components of PWN biology and host-pathogen interactions in the Biotic Disturbance Engine(BITE),a model designed to implement a variety of forest biotic agents,from fungi to large *** simulate dynamically changing host availability and conditions,BITE was coupled with the forest landscape model *** potential impacts of introducing PWN were assessed in a Central European forest landscape(40,928ha),likely within PWN’s reach in future decades.A parameter sensitivity analysis indicated a substantial influence of factors related to dispersal,colonization,and vegetation impact,whereas parameters related to population growth manifested a minor *** of different assumptions about biological processes resulted in differential timing and size of the main mortality wave,eliminating 40%–95%of pine trees within 100 years post-introduction,with a maximum annual carbon loss between 1.3%and 4.2%.PWN-induced tree mortality reduced the Gross Primary Productivity,increased heterotrophic respiration,and generated a distinct legacy sink effect in the recovery *** assessment has corroborated the ecological plausibility of the simulated dynamics and highlighted the need for

Granger causal representation learning for groups of time series

Discovering causality from multivariate time series is an important but challenging *** existing methods focus on estimating the Granger causal structures among multivariate time series,while ignoring the prior knowledge of these time series, e.g., the group of the time series. Focusing on discovering the Granger causal structures among groups of time series, we propose a Granger causal representation learning method to solve this problem. First, we use the multiset canonical correlation analysis method to learn the Granger causal representation of each group of time series. Then, we model the Granger causal relationships among the learned Granger causal representations using a recurrent neural network with temporal information. Finally, we formulate the above two stages into one unified optimization problem, which is efficiently solved using the augmented Lagrangian method. We conduct extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Jet grouting is one of the most popular soil improvement techniques,but its design usually involves great uncertainties that can lead to economic cost overruns in construction *** high dispersion in the properties of the improved material leads to designers assuming a conservative,arbitrary and unjustified strength,which is even sometimes subjected to the results of the test *** present paper presents an approach for prediction of the uniaxial compressive strength(UCs)of jet grouting columns based on the analysis of several machine learning algorithms on a database of 854 results mainly collected from different research *** selected machine learning model(extremely randomized trees)relates the soil type and various parameters of the technique to the value of the compressive *** the complex mechanism that surrounds the jet grouting process,evidenced by the high dispersion and low correlation of the variables studied,the trained model allows to optimally predict the values of compressive strength with a significant improvement with respect to the existing ***,this work proposes for the first time a reliable and easily applicable approach for estimation of the compressive strength of jet grouting columns.

Insights into reservoir-triggered landslides development and its influence factors in the Three Gorges Reservoir area， China

More than 5000 landslides or potential landslides have been triggered in the Three Gorges Reservoir （TGR） area since the impoundment in 2003. Aimed at investigating the reservoir-induced landslides spatiotemporal and size distribution and its influence factors in the TGR by taking 790 landslides as statistical samples. The landslides exhibit significant regional and sub-regional differences in spatially， and numerous landslides occurred at the initial three impoundment stages and the corresponding following 2–3 cycles of reservoir operations， but the landslide frequency decreased dramatically after 2010 in temporally. The relationship between landslide development and topographical， geological as well as hydrological factors were analyzed qualitatively. The reservoir-induced landslides in TGR area exhibit self-organized criticality and the rollover is nearly 2.5×104m2， which could not attribute to the data missing but the coupled influences imposed by affecting factors. Both the double Pareto and inverse gamma functions are more suitable than the power-law function to present the landslide size characteristics. In term of the fitting precious， the adaptability of the inverse gamma function is better if the landslide inventories are limited. The research results provide foundation for the landslide susceptibility maps and hazard risk assessment.
