Constitutive basis of root system architecture:uncovering a promising trait for breeding nutrient-and drought-resilient crops

Root system architecture(RSA)plays a pivotal role in efficient uptake of essential nutrients,such as phosphorous(P),nitrogen(N),and water In soils with heterogeneous nutrient distribution,root plasticity can optimize acquisition and plant growth.Here,we present evidence that a constitutive RSA can confer benefits for sorghum grown under both sufficient and limiting growth conditions.Our studies,using P efficient SC103 and inefficient BTx635 sorghum cultivars,identified significant differences in root traits,with SC103 developing a larger root system with more and longer lateral roots,and enhanced shoot biomass,under both nutrient sufficient and deficient conditions.In addition to this constitutive attribute,under P deficiency,both cultivars exhibited an initial increase in lateral root development;however,SC103 still maintained the larger root biomass.Although N deficiency and drought stress inhibited both root and shoot growth,for both sorghum cultivars,SC103 again maintained the better performance.These findings reveal that SC103,a P efficient sorghum cultivar,also exhibited enhanced growth performance under N deficiency and drought.Our results provide evidence that this constitutive nature of RSA can provide an avenue for breeding nutrient-and drought-resilient crops.

Synthesis, SAR, and in Silico ADME Screening Studies of Some 9-Amino-3-Phenylacridone Derivatives as Topoisomerase II Inhibitors

Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, claiming about 9.6 million lives and approximately 420 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the world by the year 2025. The aim of this study was to synthesize and computationally evaluate pharmacological potential of some derivatives of 9-amino-3-phenylacridone, as topoisomerase II (Topo II) inhibitors. In this study, 10 derivatives of 3-phenyl-9-aminoacridone were chemically synthesized and characterized, and the potential pharmacological indications of these compounds were computationally predicted by methods such as ADMET prediction, molecular target prediction and molecular docking. The results showed that two derivatives (58e and 58j) were non-permeant of blood-brain barrier, and this property was found similar to that of amsacrine and etoposide. The results of molecular docking of the ten derivatives of 3-phenyl-9-aminoacridone that were synthesized in this work showed that the synthetic compounds (58a-j) and the standard drugs have overall best binding affinities for human acetylcholine esterase than butyrylcholinesterase, and overall best binding affinities for human topo IIα than human topo IIβ. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the synthetic compounds 58a, 58c, 58f, 58g, and 58i could probably inhibit topo IIα by catalytic inhibition as seen with amsacrine, but only 58b and 58e possessed DNA non-intercalation properties as seen with etoposide, serving as topo II poison. In conclusion, this study showed that 3-phenyl-9-aminoacridone derivatives are potential inhibitor of topo IIα/β both by catalytic inhibition and poison as non-intercalator of DNA.

A review on the effects of sleep duration on hypertension

Blood pressure and sleep,the two important indicators of health outcomes,are of increasing public health importance.There are variations in the blood pressure parameters during sleep and association exists between sleep and elevated blood pressure.The absence of nocturnal dipping of the blood pressure also increases cardiovascular risk.Sleep duration has been defined as normal(7-8 hours of sleep),short≤6 hours and long sleep≥9 hours.Short sleep duration is associated with hypertension especially during middle age and women who are deprived of sleep particularly post-menopausal had a higher risk of hypertension than men.Methodological concerns exist in the measurement of sleep duration,although both subjective and objective assessment of sleep duration showed an association with hypertension.Shorter sleep duration is believed to result in prolonged exposures to elevated sympathetic activity and psychosocial stressors.There is no enough evidence to support this statement for longer sleep duration.Long and short sleep duration are associated with the incidence of hypertension across most age groups.Relationships of short sleep are stronger among women and young adults compared to long sleep duration which is stronger among the elderly.

A Systematic review on the Neurological manifestations of COVID-19

Background:Background:The unprecedented virus(COVID-19)has claimed the lives of humans worldwide since the onset of the current pandemic.The virus which commonly starts as mild symptoms most often progresses to severe cases.Healthcare workers have reported that some patients present with atypical symptoms such as cerebrovascular accidents,taste disorders and nerve disorders.Hence,patients with neurological involvement following the infection may be easily misdiagnosed and mismanaged.In order to assess the occurrence,development and prognosis of this novel infection for a better understanding and management,a systematic review of the published cases was done which gives an insight into the possibility that some infected patients may not manifest with the primary symptoms of the respiratory system.Methods:A systematic review of literature searches were conducted in three databases:PubMed,EMBASE and google scholar between December 01,2019 to July 16,2020 for published articles related to the neurologic symptoms of COVID-19.The screening of articles was conducted by two reviewers independently.Results:Thirty-five relevant articles comprising of a total of 543 patients which met the inclusion criteria were carefully selected and included in this review.Headache and dizziness were the most commonly reported symptoms followed by impaired conscious level,olfactory disorders(Anosmia and hyposmia)and taste disorders(Ageusia).In severe cases,acute cerebrovascular accidents,cerebral hemorrhage and Guillain Barre Syndrome were also significantly reported.Conclusion:Some of the neurologic manifestations may occur at the onset of SARS-CoV-2 infection or independently of the respiratory symptoms.Hence,the health care providers need to be prepared and unusually alert in the management of patients in order to avoid delayed or misdiagnosis.This will help in reducing the morbidities and mortalities associated with the infection.
