Presence of a cerebral factor showing summer-morph- producing hormone activity in the brain of the seasonal non- polyphenic butterflies Vanessa cardui, V. indica and Nymphalis xanthomelas japonica （Lepidoptera： Nymphalidae）

Three species ofnymphalid butterflies, Vanessa cardui, V. indica and Nymphalis xanthomelasjaponica, do not exhibit seasonal polyphenism in wing coloration. To deter-mine whether seasonal non-polyphenic butterflies possess a cerebral factor affecting wing coloration, we used a Polygonia c-aureurn female short-day pupal assay for detection of summer-morph-producing hormone （SMPH） activity in P. c-aureum. When 2% NaCl extracts of 25 brain-equivalents prepared from the pupal brains of V. cardui, V. indica or N. xanthomelasjaponica were injected into Polygonia female short-day pupae, all recipients developed into summer-morph adults with dark-yellow wings, and the average grade score （AGS） of summer morphs showing SMPH activity was 3.8, 3.7 and 4.0, respectively. In contrast, when acetone or 80% ethanol extracts prepared from pupal brains were injected into Polygonia pupae, all recipients developed into autumn-morph adults with a dark-brown coloration and each exhibited an AGS of less than 0.5. Our results indicate that a cerebral factor showing SMPH activity is present in the pupal brain of seasonal non-polyphenic nymphalid butterflies, suggesting that a SMPH and cerebral factor showing SMPH activity occur widely among butterfly species. This finding will improve our understanding of the presence of cerebral factors showing interspecific actions of SHPH.

Biological removal of selenate in saline wastewater by activated sludge under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions

Selenium (Se)-containing industrial wastewater is often coupled with notable salinity. However, limited studies have examined biological treatment of Se-containing wastewater under high salinity conditions. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with activated sludge was applied to treat selenate in synthetic saline wastewater (3% w/v NaCl) supplemented with lactate as the carbon source. Start-up of the SBR was performed with addition of 1–5 mM of selenate under oxygen-limiting conditions, which succeeded in removing more than 99% of the soluble Se. Then, the treatment of 1 mM Se with cycle duration of 3 days was carried out under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions by adding aeration period after oxygen-limiting period. Although the SBR maintained soluble Se removal of above 97%, considerable amount of solid Se remained in the effluent as suspended solids and total Se removal fluctuated between about 40 and 80%. Surprisingly, the mass balance calculation found a considerable decrease of Se accumulated in the SBR when the aeration period was prolonged to 7 h, indicating very efficient Se biovolatilization. Furthermore, microbial community analysis suggested that various Se-reducing bacteria coordinately contributed to the removal of Se in the SBR and main contributors varied depending on the operational conditions. This study will offer implications for practical biological treatment of selenium in saline wastewater.

Luminescence study of europium(III) tris(β-diketonato)/phosphonate complexes in chloroform

The extraction of Eu（Ⅲ） with β-diketone, HA, and monodentate or bidentate Lewis bases, B, into chloroform and the luminescence properties of the extracted species were studied. Pivaloyltrifluoroacetone, Hpta, and 2-thenoyltfifluoroacetone, Htta, were used as the β-diketones. The Lewis bases, B, were tetraethyl methylene diphosphonate, POPO, which was bidentate, and diethyl benzylphosphonate, PhPO which was monodentate. Based on the extraction data, the stability constants, log β, of the first complexes between tfis（β-diketonato）Eu（Ⅲ） and the phosphonate, EuA3B, were determined to be 6.0 for the POPO complex and 3.40 for the PhPO complex. The Eu（Ⅲ） luminescence intensity in the EuA3POPO was larger than EuA3 where A was either pta or tta at similar concentrations of Eu（Ⅲ）, while that in Eu（pta）3PhPO was stronger than EuA3; however, in Eu（tta）3PhPO, it was weaker than Eu（tta）3. The POPO functions as a sensitizer, and the PhPO functions as a quencher for the tta chelate and as a sensitizer for the pta chelate. From the lifetime and quantum yield, φ, of the Eu（Ⅲ） luminescence in the complexes as well as the observation of the extractability of Eu（Ⅲ） with the Hpta and the phosphonates and of the luminescence spectra of the complexes, it was confirmed that the extraction of Eu（Ⅲ） was remarkably enhanced with a β-diketonate and a strong Lewis base, and also the ternary complex that was formed as the extracted species, showed luminescence enhancement. This phenomenon may be due the formation of a strong bond between the Eu（Ⅲ） and the strong Lewis base leading to more hydrophobicity in the extracted species and also to more effective energy transfer from the Lewis base to the Eu（Ⅲ）. It was not significant whether the donor atoms were N or O.

Ammonia has emerged as a promising hydrogen carrier with applications as an energy source in recent years. However, in addition to being toxic, gaseous ammonia is a precursor of secondary inorganic aerosols. The concentration of ambient fine particulate matter （PM2.5） is intrinsically connected to public health. In this study, PM2.5-related health impacts of utilizing ammonia-hydrogen energy in Kanto Region, Japan, were investigated. It was assumed that 20% of the electricity consumption in Kanto Region, the most populated area in Japan, was supplied by mnmonia-hydrogen energy. The PM2.5 resulted from incomplete ammonia decomposition was simulated by a chemical transport model： ADMER-PRO （modified version）. Based on the incremental PM2.5 concentration, health impacts on the elderly （individuals over 65 years old） were quantitatively evaluated. The ammonia emission in this scenario increased PM2 s by 11.7% （0.16 μg·m-3.y-1） in winter and 3.5% （0.08 μg · m-3.y-1） in summer, resulting in 351 premature deaths per year. This study suggests that cost- effective emissions control or treatment and appropriate land planning should be considered to reduce the associated health impacts of this type of energy generation. In addition, further in-depth research, including cost-benefit analysis and security standards, is needed.

Airflow adjustment and minimization of the air power of ventilation network

It is often required to know which roadway （adjustment roadway） resistances and how much values of the resis- tances should be changed to make the airflow rates in roadways （target roadways） to certain required values in the practice of mine ventilation. In this case, the airflow rates of the target roadways and the resistances of the roadways other than the ad- justment roadways are the given conditions and the resistances of the adjustment roadways are the solutions to be found. No straightforward method to solve the problem has been found up to now. Therefore, trial and error method using the ventilation network analysis program is utilized to solve the problem so far. The method takes long calculation time and the best answer is not necessarily obtained. The authors newly defined ＂airflow element＂ as an element of the ventilation network analysis. The resistances that satisfy the airflow requirements can be calculated straight forwardly by putting the function of the airflow element into the ventilation network analysis. The air power required for the ventilation can be minimized while meeting the airflow requirements by the advanced application of the method. The authors made the computer program fulfill the method. The program was applied to actual ventilation network and it was found that the method is very practical and the time required for the analysis is short.

Effects of scallop shell extract on scopolamine-induced memory impairment and MK801-induced locomotor activity

Objective:To evaluate the neuroprotective effects of the organic components of scallop shells(scallop shell extract) on memory impairment and locomotor activity induced by scopolamine or 5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo(a,d) cyclohepten-5,10-imine(MK801).Methods:Effect of the scallop shell extract on memory impairment and locomotor activity was investigated using the Y-maze test,the Morris water maze test,and the open field ***:Scallop shell extract significantly reduced scopolamine-induced short-term memory impairment and partially reduced scopolamine-induced spatial memory impairment in the Morris water maze *** shell extract suppressed scopolamine-induced elevation of acetylcholine esterase activity in the cerebral *** with scallop shell extract reversed the increase in locomotor activity induced by *** shell extract also suppressed the increase in locomotor activity induced by ***:Our results provide initial evidence that scallop shell extract reduces scopolamine-induced memory impairment and suppresses MK-801-induced hyperlocomotion.

Metachronous penile metastasis from rectal cancer after total pelvic exenteration

Despite its abundant vascularization and extensive circulatory communication with neighboring organs, metastases to the penis are a rare event. A 57-yearold male, who had undergone total pelvic exenteration for rectal cancer sixteen months earlier, demonstrated an abnormal uptake within his penis by positron emission tomography/computed tomography. A single elastic nodule of the middle penis shaft was noted deep within Bucks fascia. No other obvious recurrent site was noted except the penile lesion. Total penectomy was performed as a curative resection based on a diagnosis of isolated penile metastasis from rectal cancer. A histopathological examination revealed an increase of well differentiated adenocarcinoma in the corpus spongiosum consistent with his primary rectal tumor. The immunohistochemistry of the tumor cells demonstrated positive staining for cytokeratin 20 and negative staining for cytokeratin 7, which strongly supported a diagnosis of penile metastasis from the rectum. The patient is alive more than two years without any recurrence.

Pedunculated Brunner's gland hamartoma of the duodenum causing upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage

A case of pedunculated Brunner＇s gland hamartoma （BGH） of the duodenum causing upper gastrointestinal （GI） hemorrhage is reported. The patient was a 47-year-old man who visited our hospital for further evaluation of tarry stools and shortness of breath. Endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract revealed a large peduncular polyp with bleeding, about 30 mm in diameter, arising from the wall of the second portion of the duodenum. GI bleeding occurred from the base of the stalk of the polyp. Endoscopic polypectomy was performed. Histological examination of the specimen revealed that the main body of the polyp contained several Iobules of mature Brunner＇s gland with areas of cystic dilatation. The surface epithelium consisted of normal duodenal mucosa with areas of focal ulceration. This polyp was diagnosed as a BGH. The symptom of tarry stools resolved after endoscopic resection. Our case shows that treatment is necessary for duodenal BGH if GI bleeding occurs.

Bacterial community succession during the enrichment of chemolithoautotrophic arsenite oxidizing bacteria at high arsenic concentrations

To generate cost-effective technologies for the removal of arsenic from water, we developed an enrichment culture of chemolithoau- totrophic arsenite oxidizing bacteria （CAOs） that could effectively oxidize widely ranging concentrations of As（III） to As（V）. In addition, we attempted to elucidate the enrichment process and characterize the microbial composition of the enrichment culture. A CAOs enrichment culture capable of stably oxidizing As（III） to As（V） was successfully constructed through repeated batch cultivation for more than 700 days, during which time the initial As（iiI） concentrations were increased in a stepwise manner from 1 to 10-12 mmol/L. As（III） oxidation activity of the enrichment culture gradually improved, and 10-12 mmol/L As（III） was almost completely oxidized within four days. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis showed that the dominant bacteria in the enrichment culture varied drastically during the enrichment process depending on the As（III） concentration. Isolation and characterization of bacteria in the enrichment culture revealed that the presence of multiple CAOs with various As（Ⅲ） oxidation abilities enabled the culture to adapt to a wide range of As（Ⅲ） concentrations. The CAOs enrichment culture constructed here may be useful for pretreatment of water from which arsenic is being removed.
