Ashes from sewage sludge incineration have a high phosphorus content, approximately 8% （W/W）, which indicates a potential resource of the limiting nutrient. Incineration of sewage sludge with subsequent recovery of phosphorus is a relatively new sludge treatment technique. In this article, the leaching of phosphorus by using sulfuric acid as well as hydrochloric acid by means of several batch experiments was presented. At the same time a selective recovery of phosphorus by adsorption was also discussed. The effects of acid concentration, temperature and time on extraction were studied. The phosphorus leaching increased with the increase in acid concentration and temperature. Kinetic studies showed that the complete leaching of phosphorus took place in less than 4 h. Selective adsorption of phosphorus by using orange waste gel provided a hint for recovery of this natural resource, which eventually could meet the ever-increasing requirement for phosphorus. The overall results indicated that the incinerated sewage sludge ash can be treated with acid to efficiently recover phosphorus and thus can be considered a potentially renewable source of phosphorus.

The bulk glassy Cu 60 Zr 30 Ti 10 alloy with a diameter up to 4 mm and a length of 70 mm containing nanocrystalline phase was successfully developed by using copper mold casting method. The temperature interval of the supercooled liquid region before crystallization is above 37 K. The glass transition temperature ( T g) and the reduced glass transition temperature ( T g/ T l) of the cast bulk glassy Cu 60 Zr 30 Ti 10 alloy are 713 K and 0.62. The cast bulk glassy alloy, which has high glassy forming ability, shows expected mechanical properties. The elastic modulus, yield strength, fracture strength and elongation including elastic elongation are 114 GPa, 1 785 MPa, 2 150 MPa and 3.3% respectively in compressive deformation, and 112 GPa, 1 780 MPa, 2 000 MPa and 1.9% respectively in tensile deformation. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and nano beam electron diffraction (NBED) studies indicate that the cast metallic bulk glassy Cu 60 Zr 30 Ti 10 alloy consists of nanocrystals with a size of 4 nm embedded in glassy matrix. The nanoparticle is identified as CuZr and has point space group symmetry of pm3m and its lattice parameter is a =0.3 262 nm . The nanocrystalline phase grew up to 10 nm upon annealing at 430 ℃ for 10 min and caused the alloy brittle.

We explore the organizational, environmental, and economic effects of sustainable forest management （FM） certification by Smart- Wood （SW）, one of the certification bodies accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council （FSC） to carry out certification in Japan. We closely investigated three enterprises： the Yusuhara Forest Owners＇ Cooperative, Yamanashi Prefectural Forest, and Ryujin-mura Forest Owners＇ Coopera- tive. Interviews with representatives of these entities provided crucial empirical information regarding the influence of certification on envi- ronmental assessment, rare-species protection, landscape-management planning, management objectives, and forest supervision. Attainment of FM status improved environmental awareness and engendered positive changes in assessing and managing forests and other natural resources but simultaneously imposed heavier economic costs.

In the current study, we prepared a ground mixture(GM) of caffeic acid(CA) with α-cyclodextrin(αCD) and with β-cyclodextrin(βCD), and then comparatively assessed the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacities of these GMs. Phase solubility diagrams indicated that both CA/αCD and CA/βCD formed a complex at a molar ratio of 1/1. In addition, stability constants suggested that CA was more stable inside the cavity of αCD than inside the cavity of βCD. Results of powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD) indicated that the characteristic diffraction peaks of CA and CD disappeared and a halo pattern was produced by the GMs of CA/αCD and CA/βCD(molar ratios = 1/1). Dissolution testing revealed that both GMs had a higher rate of dissolution than CA alone did. Based on the1 H-1 H NOESY NMR spectra for the GM of CA/αCD, the vinylene group of the CA molecule appeared to be included from the wider to the narrower rim of the αCD ring. Based on spectra for the GM of CA/βCD, the aromatic ring of the CA molecule appeared to be included from the wider to the narrower rim of the βCD ring. This suggests that the structures of the CA inclusion complexes differed between those involving αCD rings and those involving βCD rings. Results of a DPPH radical-scavenging activity test indicated that the GM of CA/αCD had a higher antioxidant capacity than that of the GM of CA/βCD. The differences in the antioxidant capacities of the GMs of CA/αCD and CA/βCD are presumably due to differences in stability constants and structures of the inclusion complexes.

Leaf Positioning of Arabidopsis in Response to Blue Light

Appropriate leaf positioning is essential for optimizing photosynthesis and plant growth. However, it has not been elucidated how green leaves reach and maintain their position for capturing light. We show here the regulation of leaf positioning under blue light stimuli. When 1-week-old Arabidopsis seedlings grown under white light were transferred to red light （25 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） for 5 d, new petioles that appeared were almost horizontal and their leaves were curled and slanted downward. However, when a weak blue light from above （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） was superimposed on red light, the new petioles grew obliquely upward and the leaves were flat and horizontal. The leaf positioning required both phototropinl （photl） and nonphototropic hypocotyl 3 （NPH3）, and resulted in enhanced plant growth. In an nph3 mutant, neither optimal leaf positioning nor leaf flattening by blue light was found, and blue light-induced growth enhancement was drastically reduced. When blue light was increased from 0.1 to 5 i, mol m^-2 s^-1, normal leaf positioning and leaf flattening were induced in both photl and nph3 mutants, suggesting that phot2 signaling became functional and that the signaling was independent of photl and NPH3 in these responses. When plants were irradiated with blue light （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^- 1） from the side and red light from above, the new leaves became oriented toward the source of blue light. When we transferred these plants to both blue light and red light from above, the leaf surface changed its orientation to the new blue light source within a few hours, whereas the petioles initially were unchanged but then gradually rotated, suggesting the plasticity of leaf positioning in response to blue light. We showed the tissue expression of NPH3 and its plasma membrane localization via the coiled-coil domain and the C-terminal region. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） are a class of pollutants that are widespread in the en- vironment. Their hydrophobic properties make accurate analyses very difficult. In addition, the experimental losses during extraction of PAHs are inevitable and of great concern. In this study, dichloromethane （DCM）, chloroform （CF）, and carbon disulfide （CDS） were used as solvents to extract phenanthrene （PHN）, a typical PAH, at various temperature and pressure reduction conditions. The extraction was improved using a multi- ple microtube extraction methodology. The results indicate that the CDS had the best performance followed by CF and DCM at 25~C and standard pressure. This was ascribed to the intensity of the molecular interac- tions between the solvent, the water, and the PHN due to their different molecular structures leading to dif- ferent stereo and hydrogen bonding effects. The optimum conditions for extraction of PHN by CDS were determined by correlating the experimental results. The regression shows that the experimental loss rate is linearly proportional to the pressure reduction and exponentially related to the temperature. The correlation can be used to improve extraction efficiencies.

An experimental apparatus was developed to study the three dimensional separated flow with spiral-foci. The internal decelerating flow was generated by the air suction from a side wall to produce the separation on an opposite-side wall. The relation between the upstream boundary layer and the generation of spiral-foci in the separation region was observed by a tuft method. As a result, it was clarified that the spiral-focus type separation could be produced on the side wall and its behavior was closely related to the vortices supplied into the separation region from the boundary layer developing along top wall or bottom one.

The major Rhesus （Rh） protein of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Rhl, is homologous to Rh proteins of humans. It is an integral membrane protein involved in transport of carbon dioxide. To localize a fusion of intact Rhl to the green fluorescent protein （GFP）, we used as host a white （Its1） mutant strain of C. reinhardtii, which is blocked at the first step of carotenoid biosynthesis. The Its1 mutant strain accumulated normal amounts of Rhl heterotrophically in the dark and Rhl-GFP was at the periphery of the cell co-localized with the cytoplasmic membrane dye FM4-64. Although Rhl carries a potential chloroplast targeting sequence at its N-terminus, Rhl-GFP was clearly not associated with the chloroplast envelope membrane. Moreover, the N-terminal half of the protein was not imported into chloroplasts in vitro and N-terminal regions of Rhl did not direct import of the small subunit of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase （SSU）. Despite caveats to this interpretation, which we discuss, current evidence indicates that Rhl is a cytoplasmic membrane protein and that Rhl-GFP is among the first cytoplasmic membrane protein fusions to be obtained in C. reinhardtii. Although Its1 （white） mutant strains cannot be used to localize proteins within sub-compartments of the chloroplast because they lack thylakoid membranes, they should nonetheless be valuable for localizing many GFP fusions in Chlamydomonas.

Accelerated degradation of a variety of aromatic compounds by Spirodela polyrrhiza-bacterial associations and contribution of root exudates released from S. polyrrhiza

Removal experiments of phenol, aniline, 2,4-dichlorophenol, nonylphenol and bisphenol A （BPA） using Spirodela polyrrhiza- bacterial associations revealed that all compounds but BPA underwent accelerated removal. The mechanisms differed depending on the substrates. It was found that S. polyrrhiza has a great ability to release phenolic compound-rich root exudates, and the exudates seem to stimulate bacterial degradation of a variety of aromatic compounds.
