End-to-end and end-to-side neurorrhaphy between thick donor nerves and thin recipient nerves:an axon regeneration study in a rat model

During nerve reconstruction,nerves of different thicknesses are often sutured together using end-to-side neurorrhaphy and end-to-end neurorrhaphy *** this study,the effect of the type of neurorrhaphy on the number and diameter of regenerated axon fibers was studied in a rat facial nerve repair *** inflow-type end-to-side and end-to-end neurorrhaphy model with nerve stumps of different thicknesses（2：1 diameter ratio） was created in the facial nerve of 14 adult male Sprague-Dawley *** 6 and 12 weeks,nerve regeneration was evaluated in the rats using the following outcomes：total number of myelinated axons,average minor axis diameter of the myelinated axons in the central and peripheral sections,and axon regeneration ***-to-end neurorrhaphy resulted in a significantly greater number of regenerated myelinated axons and rate of regeneration after 6 weeks than end-to-side neurorrhaphy;however,no such differences were observed at 12 *** the regenerated axons were thicker at 12 weeks than at 6 weeks,no significant differences in axon fiber thickness were detected between end-to-end and end-toside ***,end-to-end neurorrhaphy resulted in greater numbers of regenerated axons and increased axon regeneration rate during the early postoperative *** rapid reinnervation is one of the most important factors influencing the restoration of target muscle function,we conclude that end-to-end neurorrhaphy is desirable when suturing thick nerves to thin nerves.

Comparative evaluation of acute phase proteins by C-reactive protein(CRP)and serum amyloid A(SAA)in nonhuman primates and feline carnivores

The feasibility of a commercially available assay for C-reactive protein(CRP,CRP for humans:hCRP,and CRP for dogs:vCRP)and a trial reagent of serum amyloid A(SAA,vSAA for animals)were applied to the measurement of acute phase proteins in zoo animals,particularly in nonhuman primates and feline carnivores was *** showed that hCRP and vSAA methods were applicable to measure CRP and SAA in *** was a highly signifcant correlation between both parameters with remarkably high correlation coefcient.A higher proportion of Bonnet macaques in Haplorhini,and the linear regression with good correlation between hCRP and vSAA levels were *** values in healthy Bonnet macaques were hCRP(46.86±30.97 nmol/L)and vSAA(9.06±1.95μg/mL).Although Ring-tailed lemur,which belonging to Strepsirrhini,showed low vSAA concentrations(reference values:1.08±0.47μg/mL),vSAA in patients was apparently *** vCRP and vSAA methods were applicable to measurements of CRP and SAA in feline carnivores for highly signifcant correlation between both *** two methods were also been deteded in lions,tigers and *** assays can be applied to measure SAA levels in other carnivores and *** conclusion,vSAA systems have potential utility as diagnostic tools for health screening and prediction in zoo animals.

In the mammalian brain, four neurotrophins have been identified： nerve growth factor （NGF）, brain-derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF）, neurotrophin-3 （NT-3） and neurotrophin-4/5 （NT-4/5）. NGF exerts an important role in the development and functions of the central and peripheral nervous system. However, it has recently been documented that several types of immune cells, such as mast ceils, iymphocytes, basophils and eosinophils, produce, store and release NGF. Accumulating preclinical and clinical data indicate that dysfunctions of NGF and the other neurotrophins may contribute to impaired immune responses and concentration of NGF frequently correlates with disease severity. Thus, the aim of this study was to elucidate the potential signaling mechanisms of cytokineneurotrophins interactions contributing to increased NGF levels. Our data show that the transcription factor NF-κB plays a pivotal role in regulating B-cell-derived NGF expression.

Degradation of Reactive Yellow 86 with photo-Fenton process driven by solar light

The decolorization of Reactive Yellow 86 （RY 86）, one of reactive azo dyes, was investigated in the presence of Fenton reagent under solar light irradiation. The decolorization rate was strongly influenced by pH, initial concentrations of H202 and Fe（II）, and so on. An initial concentration of 40 mg/L was decolored more than 90% after 20 min under optimum conditions. The activation energy of the solar photo-Fenton reaction was 1.50 kJ/mol for RY 86 in the temperature range of 10-60℃. In the kinetic study, the rate constant of RY 86 with OH- radicals could be estimated to be 1.7 × 10^10 L/（***）. The decolorization efficiency of RY 86 under solar light irradiation was comparable to the artificial light irradiation. The decrease of TOC as a result of mineralization of RY 86 was observed during photo-Fenton process. The rate of RY 86 mineralization was about 83% under UV irradiation after 24 hr. The formation of chloride, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions as end-products was observed during the photocatalytic process. The decomposition of RY 86 gave two kinds of intermediate products. The degradation mechanism of RY 86 was proposed on the base of the identified intermediates.

Sentinel lymph node navigation surgery for gastric cancer: Does it really benefit the patient?

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) navigation surgery is accepted as a standard treatment procedure for malignant melanoma and breast cancer. However, the benefit of reduced lymphadenectomy based on SLN examination remains unclear in cases of gastric cancer. Here, we review previous studies to determine whether SLN navigation surgery is beneficial for gastric cancer patients. Recently, a large-scale prospective study from the Japanese Society of Sentinel Node Navigation Surgery reported that the endoscopic dual tracer method, using a dye and radioisotope for SLN biopsy, was safe and effective when applied to cases of superficial and relatively small gastric cancers. SLN mapping with SLN basin dissection was preferred for early gastric cancer since it is minimally invasive. However, previous studies reported that limited gastrectomy and lymphadenectomy may not improve the patient’s postoperative quality of life (QOL). As a result, the benefit of SLN navigation surgery for gastric cancer patients, in terms of their QOL, is limited. Thus, endoscopic and laparoscopic limited gastrectomy combined with SLN navigation surgery has the potential to become the standard minimally invasive surgery in early gastric cancer.

Color Restoration Method Based on Spectral Information Using Normalized Cut

This paper proposes a novel method for color restoration that can effectively apply accurate color based on spectral information to a segmented image using the normalized cut technique. Using the proposed method, we can obtain a digital still camera image and spectral information in different environments. Also, it is not necessary to estimate reflectance spectra using a spectral database such as other methods. The synthesized images are accurate and high resolution. The proposed method effectively works in making digital archive contents. Some experimental results are demonstrated in this paper.

Intruduction:We assessed recent trends in children's connection with nature over the period of 2000-2015,using indices of wildlife awareness that focus on changes in wildlife abundance and the level of apathy among *** used data from a survey conducted in 63 junior high school districts in the city of Sendai in *** these surveys,children were asked whether they had seen 12 species groups within the past *** examine changes in children's connection with nature,we used observed frequencies as an indicator of both the abundance of the species and children's apathy toward *** and Discussions:Results indicated an increase in children's apathy toward species that had low popularity regardless of residential *** results suggest that regular exposure to wildlife would be effective in preventing the loss of children's connection with nature,particularly by reducing children's apathy toward less-popular species.

Surface-mounted bender elements for measuring horizontal shear wave velocity of soils

The bender element testing features its in-plane directivity, which allows using bender elements to measure the shear wave velocities in a wider range of in-plane configurations besides the standard tip-to-tip alignment. This paper proposed a novel bender element testing technique for measuring the horizontal shear wave velocity of soils, where the bender elements are surface- mounted and the axes of the source and receiver elements are parallel to each other. The preliminary tests performed on model ground of silica sand showed that, by properly determining the travel distance and time of the shear waves, the surface-mounted bender elements can perform as accurately as the conventional "tip-to-tip" configuration. Potentially, the present system provides a promising nondestructive tool for characterizing geomaterials and site conditions both in laboratory and in the fields.

Recent topics related to testosterone deficiency syndrome n Japan

Androgens, the levels of which decrease with ageing, play many physiological roles in various organs. Testosterone deficiency syndrome （TDS） has received widespread attention in the last several years. First-line treatment for TDS should be testosterone replacement therapy （TRT）, which is reported to improve several TDS symptoms. Recently, a clinical practice manual for TDS was written and published by a collaborative team from the Japanese Urological Association and the Japanese Society for the Study of the Aging Male to recommend standard procedures for the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and monitoring of adverse reactions to TRT and for post-treatment assessment. In this manual, intramuscular injection of testosterone enanthate or human chorionic gonadotropin and the testosterone gel ＇Glowmin＇ were recommended as TRT. Currently, two topics related to TDS are being focused on in Japan： the relationship between TDS and metabolic syndrome and treatment options for eugonadal patients with TDS symptoms. In this review, the possibility of TRT for metabolic syndrome as well as the relationship between testosterone and adiponectin, which is a key molecule in metabolic syndrome, is discussed. Finally, the possibility of herbal medicines as a treatment option for patients with TDS is addressed, especially for eugonadal patients, because eugonadal men with TDS symptoms account for approximately 30% of the general population. The increase in the levels of several cytokines, such as IL-8, IL-13, interferon.y and tumor necrosis factor-α, after herbal medicine treatment may be the reason for this efficacy.
