Flow and geochemical modeling of drainage from Tomitaka mine,Miyazaki,Japan

The chemistry and flow of water in the abandoned Tomitaka mine of Miyazaki, western Japan were investigated. This mine is located in a non-ferrous metal deposit and acid mine drainage issues from it. The study was undertaken to estimate the quantities of mine drainage that needs to be treated in order to avoid acidification of local rivers, taking into account seasonal variations in rainfall. Numerical models aimed to reproduce observed water levels and fluxes and chemical variations of groundwater and mine drainage. Rock–water interactions that may explain the observed variations in water chemistry are proposed. The results show that：（1） rain water infiltrates into the deeper bedrock through a highly permeable zone formed largely by stopes that are partially filled with spoil from excavations（ore minerals and host rocks）;（2） the water becomes acidic（p H from 3 to 4） as dissolved oxygen oxidizes pyrite;（3） along the flow path through the rocks, the redox potential of the water becomes reducing, such that pyrite becomes stable and p H of the mine drainage becomes neutral; and（4） upon leaving the mine, the drainage becomes acidic again due to oxidation of pyrite in the rocks. The present numerical model with considering of the geochemical characteristics can simulate the main variations in groundwater flow and water levels in and around the Tomitaka mine, and apply to the future treatment of the mine drainage.

Two-dimensional quantum transport of multivalley （111） surface state in topological crystalline insulator SnTe thin films

The magneto-transport properties of （111）-oriented single-crystal thin films of SnTe were investigated. SnTe （111） thin films were epitaxially grown on a BaF2 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the growth conditions and the thickness of the films, the bulk carrier density could be reduced, making it possible to detect the surface transport. Magneto-conductance （MC） measurements show a cusp-like feature around zero magnetic field, which is attributed to the weak-antilocalization effect of the transport in the topological surface state. Detailed analysis of this negative MC reveals a reduced number of transport channels contributing to the surface transport, suggesting strong coupling between Dirac valleys on the SnTe （111） surface, as a characteristic feature of the transport in the multivalley structure of topological crystalline insulators.

Possible Sources of Forecast Errors Generated by the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System for Landfalling Tropical Cyclones. Part Ⅱ: Model Uncertainty

This paper investigates the possible sources of errors associated with tropical cyclone(TC) tracks forecasted using the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System(GRAPES). In Part I, it is shown that the model error of GRAPES may be the main cause of poor forecasts of landfalling TCs. Thus, a further examination of the model error is the focus of Part *** model error as a type of forcing, the model error can be represented by the combination of good forecasts and bad forecasts. Results show that there are systematic model errors. The model error of the geopotential height component has periodic features, with a period of 24 h and a global pattern of wavenumber 2 from west to east located between 60?S and 60?N. This periodic model error presents similar features as the atmospheric semidiurnal tide, which reflect signals from tropical diabatic heating, indicating that the parameter errors related to the tropical diabatic heating may be the source of the periodic model error. The above model errors are subtracted from the forecast equation and a series of new forecasts are made. The average forecasting capability using the rectified model is improved compared to simply improving the initial conditions of the original GRAPES model. This confirms the strong impact of the periodic model error on landfalling TC track forecasts. Besides, if the model error used to rectify the model is obtained from an examination of additional TCs, the forecasting capabilities of the corresponding rectified model will be improved.

The standard surgery for distal common bile duct adenocarcinoma,pancreatic adenocarcinoma,and ampullary adenocarcinoma is pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD).PD is a technically challenging procedure with high mortality(0-3.5%)and morbidity(38-50%)rates(1-5).It is essential to recognize the anatomy preoperatively,especially of the hepatic artery and positions of the tumors,to avoid adverse events(6,7).The aberrant right hepatic artery(aRHA)originating from the superior mesenteric artery(SMA)is the most frequent and considerable hepatic artery variation(8-10).

Discrimination of Wild Tea Germplasm Resources (Camellia sp.) Using RAPD Markers

Discrimination of 24 wild tea germplasm resources (Camellia sp.) using RAPD markers was conducted. The result showed that RAPD markers were very effective tool and method in wild tea germplasm discrimination. There were 3 independent ways to discriminate tea germplasms, a) unique RAPD markers, b) specific band patterns and c) a combination of the band patterns or DNA fingerprinting provided by different primers. The presence of 16 unique RAPD markers and the absence of 3 unique markers obtained from 12 primers made it possible to discriminate 14 germplasms. Using the unique band patterns of primer OPO-13 could discriminate 10 tea germplasms. It was of much importance using minimum primers to obtain maximum discrimination capacity. All the 24 wild tea germplasms could be discriminated easily and entirely by the band patterns combination or DNA fingerprinting obtained from OPO-13, OPO-18, OPG-12 and OPA-13, including two wild tea trees of very similar morphological characteristics and chemical components.

Excision of a large abdominal wall lipoma improved bowel passage in a Proteus syndrome patient

Proteus syndrome is an extremely rare congenital disorder that produces multifocal overgrowth of tissue. This report presents a surgical case of a large lipoma in the abdominal wall of a patient with Proteus syndrome. She was diagnosed with Proteus syndrome based on certain diagnostic criteria. The neoplasm increased in size gradually, producing hemihypertrophy of her left lower extremity and trunk, and spread to her retroperitoneum and her left abdominal wall. She experienced gradually progressive constipation, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Computed tomography （CT） of the abdomen demonstrated a large mass in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of the left lower abdominal wall which measured 12 cm×8 cm×6 cm in diameter and encased the left colon. This mass in the abdominal wall was excised. The weight of the excised mass was 1550 g. The histopathological diagnosis of this mass was lipoma. After surgery, the encasement of the left colon was improved, and the patient was able to move her bowels twice per day. The excision of the large lipoma in the abdominal wall contributed to the improved bowel passage in this patient with Proteus syndrome.

Radical Cation Diels-Alder Reactions of Non-Conjugated Alkenes as Dienophiles by Electrocatalysis

Radical cation Diels-Alder reactions provide a powerful method for the construction of six-membered ring systems between both electron-rich dienes and dienophiles. However, the most recent examples of this class have been limited to β-methylstyrenes as dienophiles;the use of non-conjugated alkenes remains challenging. The present study describes the serendipitous development of novel radical cation Diels-Alder reactions by electrocatalysis that use non-conjugated alkenes as dienophiles. The key to successful transformation involves highly substituted cyclohexenyl radical cations that are stable enough to be reduced by intermolecular single electron transfer.

Effects of Asian dust events on atmospheric bacterial communities at different distances downwind of the source region

Aeolian dust particles arising from arid and semiarid zones are known to carry microbes by air currents. The effect of wind-borne bacteria on atmospheric bacterial population at various downwind distances from the dust source regions must be clarified, but has not yet been reported. This study monitored the bacterial abundance and community composition in outdoor aerosol samples in Beijing, China, which is close to the Asian dust source regions, and compared them with the results obtained in a distant region（Osaka, Japan）.The Asian dust collected in Beijing contained（4 ± 3） × 10^4 bacterial cells/m^3, approximately 4 times higher than in Osaka. On 15 April 2015, Beijing experienced severe Asian dust events with a 1000-fold increase in bacterial abundance, relative to non-Asian dust days. Dominant bacterial phyla and classes in Asian dust collected in Beijing were Actinobacteria, Bacilli and Acidobacteria, and the bacterial community composition varied more widely than in *** bacterial community compositions differed between the Beijing and Osaka dusts, even for the same Asian dust events. These results indicated that aerosol bacterial communities nearer the dust source are more affected by eolian dust than their distant counterparts.

Development of a validation technique for road surface profile applicable to point cloud data

In recent years,various information and communication technology(ICT)devices measuring three-dimensional(3D)point cloud data have been developed and widely used for the application of pavement surface ***,ICT devices have generally been developed not only for measuring road surface profiles but for various geo-reference point *** this background,the validation of surface profiles acquired with ICT devices fulfils an important role in proving the reliability of measurement result composed by point *** study proposes a wavelet transform agreement(WTA)which involves a normalization factor of profile amplitude for further improvement in the wavelet-based coherence *** WTA analysis allows evaluating similarity/dissimilarity of two profiles considering both the location and wavelength *** this purpose,a terrestrial laser scanner(TLS),a mobile mapping system(MMS),and an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)are employed to prove the advantage of WTA in practical *** a result,the advantages of WTA analysis are clearly recognized in the optimization for the measurement interval of TLS,the multi-line measurement of MMS for ride quality improvement of a pavement,and the efficient operation of UAV in terms of the flight *** paper also shows the identification of aging development for surface roughness over time in terms of locations and *** findings help not only to guarantee the accuracy of profile measurements but to realize the sophisticated way of using 3D point clouds acquired with ICT *** outcomes of this study contribute to the increase of productivity for pavement works with improving the quality of surface profile measurement.
