Influence of Filtration Processes on Aqueous Nanostructures by NIR Spectroscopy

Filtration processes are worldwide used for sterilizing solutions and substrates. Filtration seems to induce the formation of aqueous nanostructures. The aim of this work was to verify the influence of filtration processes on water structure detected by spectral variations in NIR region. Samples of ultrapure water （MilliQ-Millipore, Vimodrone, Milan, Italy） before and after iterated filtrations were analyzed. NIR spectra were collected in transmission mode in the whole NIR range, by using NIRFIex N500 spectrometer at constant temperature （40 ± 1 ℃）. NIR data were processed using Unscrambler software v. 9.2 in evaluating qualitative differences between filtered and not filtered samples. The information related to possible solvent physical stresses were highlighted in the range 6500-7500 cm^-1. The shifts observed were ascribable to a different distribution of the number of water molecules involved in hydrogen bonds in filtered and not filtered water samples, at constant temperature. NIR spectroscopy, commonly used to study relationship between spectral changes and hydrogen bonds in water at increasing temperature values, was applied to evaluate effects of filtration processes on water structure. The obtained results are in agreement with literature data and allowed the improvement of the knowledge about pure water characteristics when some mechanical perturbations are applied.

Exocrine pancreatic neoplasms represent up to 95%of pancreatic cancers(PCs)and are widely recognized among the most lethal solid cancers,with a very poor 5-year survival rate of 5%-10%.The remaining<5%of PCs are neuroendocrine tumors that are usually characterized by a better prognosis,with a median overall survival of 3.6 *** most common type of PC is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC),which accounts for roughly 85%of all exocrine *** up to 10%of exocrine PCs have rare histotypes,which are still poorly *** subtypes can be distinguished from PDAC in terms of pathology,imaging,clinical presentation and ***,due to their rarity,any knowledge regarding these specific histotypes is mostly based on case reports and a small series of retrospective ***,treatment strategies are generally deduced from those used for PDAC,even if these patients are often excluded or not clearly represented in clinical trials for *** these reasons,it is essential to collect as much information as possible on the management of PC,as assimilating it with PDAC may lead to the potential mistreatment of these ***,we report the most significant literature regarding the epidemiology,typical presentation,possible treatment strategies,and prognosis of the most relevant histotypes among rare PCs.

Do Not Play with Fire

We report a case of exogenous lipoid pneumonia caused by inhalation of liquid paraffin in a fire eater young man. The patient was admitted to the Emergency Department because of acute retrosternal pain, dry cough and dyspnea. Chest radiograph showed multiple bilateral basal alveolar opacities associated to left pleural effusion;CT chest scan showed multiple bilateral areas of consolidation with cavity areas. BAL cytologic examination revealed abundant lipid-laden macrophages. Clinical symptoms resolved after corticosteroid treatment. Lipoid pneumonia is a rare and often underdiagnosed entity. The presence of lipid-laden macrophages in sputum or BAL fluid helps to confirm the diagnosis.
