Topical delivery of nerve growth factor for treatment of ocular and brain disorders

Neurotrophins are a family of proteins that support neuronal proliferation, survival, and differentiation in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and are regulators of neuronal plasticity. Nerve growth factor is one of the best-described neurotrophins and has advanced to clinical trials for treatment of ocular and brain diseases due to its trophic and regenerative properties. Prior trials over the past few decades have produced conflicting results, which have principally been ascribed to adverse effects of systemic nerve growth factor administration, together with poor penetrance of the blood-brain barrier that impairs drug delivery. Contrastingly, recent studies have revealed that topical ocular and intranasal nerve growth factor administration are safe and effective, suggesting that topical nerve growth factor delivery is a potential alternative to both systemic and invasive intracerebral delivery. The therapeutic effects of local nerve growth factor delivery have been extensively investigated for different ophthalmic diseases, including neurotrophic keratitis, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and dry eye disease. Further, promising pharmacologic effects were reported in an optic glioma model, which indicated that topically administered nerve growth factor diffused far beyond where it was topically applied. These findings support the therapeutic potential of delivering topical nerve growth factor preparations intranasally for acquired and degenerative brain disorders. Preliminary clinical findings in both traumatic and non-traumatic acquired brain injuries are encouraging, especially in pediatric patients, and clinical trials are ongoing. The present review will focus on the therapeutic effects of both ocular and intranasal nerve growth factor delivery for diseases of the brain and eye.

Coupled effect of cement hydration and temperature on rheological properties of fresh cemented tailings backfill slurry

The fluidity of fresh cemented tailings backfill（CTB） slurry depends on its rheological properties. Hence, it is crucial to understand the rheology of fresh CTB slurry, which is related to the cement hydration progress and temperature evolution within CTB mixtures. For this reason, a numerical model was developed to predict the evolution of the rheological properties of fresh CTB slurry under the coupled effect of cement hydration and temperature. Experiments were conducted to investigate the rheological behaviours of the fresh CTB slurry. By comparing the simulated results with the experimental ones, the availability of this developed model was validated. Thereafter, the model was used to demonstrate the coupled effect of cement hydration and temperature on the evolution of fresh CTB slurry＇s rheological properties, under various conditions（initial CTB temperature, cement to tailings ratio, and water to cement ratio）. The obtained results are helpful to better understanding the rheology of CTB slurry.

为开发营养低热量的曲奇饼干,拓展米糠的应用领域,研究在单因素试验基础上,以感官评分为响应值,以米糠粉添加量、绿茶粉添加量、赤藓糖醇添加量和黄油添加量为考察因素,通过Box-Behnken试验设计进行响应面优化分析,确定最佳制作配方。结果表明,当米糠粉添加量为11%、绿茶粉添加量为3%、赤藓糖醇添加量为38%、黄油添加量为89%时,感官评分最高,为92.9分。在此条件下制得的曲奇饼干色泽自然、香味浓郁、花纹清晰且口感酥脆。

Lower Cretaceous turbidites in the Shiquanhe–Namco Ophiolite Mélange Zone, Asa area, Tibet: Constraints on the evolution of the Meso-Tethys Ocean

Turbidites fromthe Shiquanhe–Namco OphioliteMélange Zone(SNMZ)record critical information about the tectonic affinity of the SNMZand the evolutionary history of theMeso-Tethys Ocean in *** paper reports sedimentologic,sandstone petrographic,zircon U-Pb geochronologic,and clastic rocks geochemical data of newly identified turbidites(Asa Formation)in the Asa Ophiolite Mé*** youngest ages of detrital zircon from the turbiditic sandstone samples,together with~115 Ma U-Pb concordant age from the tuff intercalation within the Asa Formation indicate an Early Cretaceous *** sandstone mineral modal composition data show that the main component is quartz grains and the minor components are sedimentary and volcanic fragments,suggesting that the turbidites were mainly derived froma recycled orogen provenancewith a minor addition of volcanic arc *** detrital U-Pb zircon ages of turbiditic sandstones yield main age populations of 170–120 Ma,300–220 Ma,600–500 Ma,1000–700 Ma,1900–1500 Ma,and~2500 Ma,similar to the ages of the Qiangtang Terrane(age peak of 600–500 Ma,1000–900 Ma,~1850 Ma and~2500 Ma)and the accretionary complex in the Bangong–Nujiang Ophiolite Zone(BNMZ)rather than the age of the Central Lhasa Terrane(age peak of~300 Ma,~550 Ma and~1150 Ma).The mineral modal compositions,detrital U-Pb zircon ages,and geochemical data of clastic rocks suggest that the Asa Formation is composed of sediments primarily recycled from the Jurassic accretionary complex within the BNMZ with the secondary addition of intermediate-felsic island arc materials from the South Qiangtang *** on our new results and previous studies,we infer that the SNMZ represents a part of the Meso-Tethys Suture Zone,rather than a southward tectonic klippe of the BNMZ or an isolated ophiolitic mélange zone within the Lhasa *** Meso-Tethys Suture Zone records the continuous evolutionary history of the northward subduction,accretion,arc-Lhasa collision,and Lhasa-Qiangta

In-vehicle stereo vision system for identification of traffic conflicts between bus and pedestrian

The traffic conflict technique （TCT） was developed as ＂surrogate measure of road safety＂ to identify near-crash events by using measures of the spatial and temporal proximity of road users. Traditionally applications of TCT focus on a specific site by the way of manually or automated supervision. Nowadays the development of in-vehicle （IV） technologies pro- vides new opportunities for monitoring driver behavior and interaction with other road users directly into the traffic stream. In the paper a stereo vision and GPS system for traffic conflict investigation is presented for detecting conflicts between vehicle and pedestrian. The system is able to acquire geo-referenced sequences of stereo frames that are used to provide real time information related to conflict occurrence and severity. As case study, an urban bus was equipped with a prototype of the system and a trial in the city of Catania （Italy） was carried out analyzing conflicts with pedestrian crossing in front of the bus. Experimental results pointed out the potentialities of the system for collection of data that can be used to get suitable traffic conflict measures. Specifically, a risk index of the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles is proposed to classify collision probability and severity using data collected by the system. This information may be used to develop in-vehicle warning systems and urban network risk assessment.

A multicenter phase II trial of domestic product of zoledronic acid in the treatment of malignant hypercalcemia

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of osteoking, a Traditional Chinese Medicine originating from Yi nationality, against osteoporosis(OP) and osteoporotic fracture(OPF), and to elucidate its mechanism of ***: An osteoporotic fracture rat model was established;animals were divided into three treatment groups: parathyroid hormone, osteoking and0.9%NaCl. After 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, serum and bone tissues were collected. Enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay, x-ray, histopathological evaluation and proteomics were *** and GO annotation were performed based on identified peptides. The relative network was obtained from the STRING database and verified by polymerase chain reaction and Western ***: After osteoking treatment, the bone mineral density(BMD) increased with time in the osteoking group. At week 12, the BMD and bone mineral salt content of the osteoking group were 4.5%and 20.6% higher than those of the negative control group, respectively. Furthermore, the body weight followed the order of positive control group > osteoking group > negative control group,with significant differences among the groups(P <0.05). Micro-CT analysis of femur sections revealed that the bone surface/volume ratio was significantly higher in the osteoking group than that in the negative control group. X-ray images demonstrated that the osteoking group showed clear ***, high-voltage micro-CT demonstrated a massive cortical bone accumulation in the osteoking group. The gray values of callus in the osteoking group were higher than those in the negative group. From week 4 to 12, the serum bone alkaline phosphatase level increased by 49.6% in the osteoking group and the serum propeptide of type procollagen level decreased by 80.6%. Sodium Tanshinone Ⅱ A Sulfonate Injection as Adjuvant Treatment for Unstable Angina Pectoris: A Meta-Analysis of 17 Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective： To systematically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Sodium Tanshinone ⅡA Sulfonate Injection（STS） as one adjuvant therapy for treating unstable angina pectoris（UAP）. Methods： Randomized controlled trials（RCTs） of UAP treated by STS were searched in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database（CNKI）, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals（VIP）, Wanfang Database, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database（CBM）, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and Pub Med, which from inception to January, 2016. The Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the RCTs. The Review Manager 5.3 software was used to conduct the metaanalysis. Results： The results showed that 17 RCTs involving 1,372 patients were included. The meta-analysis indicated that the combined use of STS and Western medicine（WM） in the treatment of UAP can obviously improve the total effective rate [risk ratio（RR）=1.31, 95% confidence interval（CI）（1.24,1.39）, P〈0.0001], and the total effective rate of electrocardiogram [RR=1.43, 95% CI（1.30,1.56）, P〈0.0001], decrease the level of CRP [mean difference（MD）=–3.06, 95%CI（–3.85, –2.27）, P〈0.00001], fibrinogen [MD=–1.03, 95% CI（–1.16, –0.89）, P〈0.00001], and whole blood high shear viscosity [MD=–0.70, 95% CI（–0.92, –0.49）, P〈0.00001]. Additionally, the occurrence of adverse drug reaction of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group [RR=3.57, 95% CI（1.28, 9.94）, P〈0.05]. Conclusions： Compared with WM, the combined use of STS was more effective.

Non-Volatile Main Memories (NVMMs) have recently emerged as a promising technology for future memory systems. Generally, NVMMs have many desirable properties such as high density, byte-addressability, non-volatility, low cost, and energy efficiency, at the expense of high write latency, high write power consumption, and limited write endurance. NVMMs have become a competitive alternative of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), and will fundamentally change the landscape of memory systems. They bring many research opportunities as well as challenges on system architectural designs, memory management in operating systems (OSes), and programming models for hybrid memory systems. In this article, we revisit the landscape of emerging NVMM technologies, and then survey the state-of-the-art studies of NVMM technologies. We classify those studies with a taxonomy according to different dimensions such as memory architectures, data persistence, performance improvement, energy saving, and wear leveling. Second, to demonstrate the best practices in building NVMM systems, we introduce our recent work of hybrid memory system designs from the dimensions of architectures, systems, and applications. At last, we present our vision of future research directions of NVMMs and shed some light on design challenges and opportunities.
