Photodeposition of CoOx and MoS2 on CdS as dual cocatalysts for photocatalytic H2 production

Photocatalytic Hproduction from water splitting has a promising prospect for alleviating energy and environmental issues.However,the fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers limits the photocatalytic efficiency and its practical application.Cocatalyst engineering is an effective strategy to spatially separate photogenerated charge carriers.In this work,noble-metal-free MoSand CoOcocatalysts are loaded on CdS nanorods by a two-step photodeposition method.The MoSfunctions as the reduction cocatalyst to trap electrons and Co Oas the oxidation cocatalyst to trap holes.Transmission electron microscopy(TEM),inductively coupled plasma(ICP),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and MottSchottky results demonstrate the effectiveness of photodeposition for loading MoSand CoOdual cocatalysts on CdS and their impact on the photochemical properties.The optimized CdS-MoS-CoOcomposite exhibits a high photocatalytic H-production rate of 7.4 mmol g^(-1)h^(-1)and an apparent quantum efficiency(QE)of 7.6%at 420 nm.Further analysis on time-resolved photoluminescence(TRPL)indicates that the introduction of dual cocatalysts greatly prolongs the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers and deceases the charge recombination rates,consequently leading to superior photocatalytic H-production performance.This work provides a facile and effective strategy for the construction of highly efficient dual-cocatalyst-modified CdS photocatalyst for high-performance photocatalytic Hproduction.

CdS nanosheets decorated with Ni@graphene core-shell cocatalyst for superior photocatalytic H_(2) production

A novel cocatalyst,i.***.metallic nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in few-layer graphene(Ni@C),is obtained by carbonization of metal–organic frameworks(MOF)and leaching treatment of hydrochloric acid.It is selected as the cocatalyst for CdS nanosheets,forming CdS-Ni@C nanocomposites.It remarkably improves the photocatalytic activities of CdS nanosheets due to the synergistic effect of Ni nanoparticles and graphene layers.In addition,the Ni nanoparticles encapsulated by graphene layers effectively isolate Ni from the ambient,which avoids contamination and curbs corrosion.The larger work function of Ni@C and outstanding conductivity of graphene promote the electron transfer from CdS to Ni@C,suppressing the recombination of photogenerated carriers and facilitating the separation of photogenerated electronhole pairs.This strategy by adopting this novel cocatalyst provides a new solution to the improvement of the photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Hierarchically nanostructured porous TiO_2(B) with superior photocatalytic CO_2 reduction activity

Hierarchically nanostructured, porous TiO_2(B) microspheres were synthesized by a microwave-assisted solvothermal method combined with subsequent heat treatment in air. The materials were carefully characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, CO_2 adsorption, and a range of spectroscopies, including Raman, infrared, X-ray photoelectron and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The hierarchical TiO_2(B) particles are constructed by ultrathin nanosheets and possess large specific surface area, which provided many active sites for CO_2 adsorption as well as CO_2 conversion. The TiO_2(B)nanostructures exhibited marked photocatalytic activity for CO_2 reduction to methane and methanol. Anatase TiO_2 and P25 were used as the reference photocatalysts. Transient photocurrent measurement also proved the higher photoactivity of TiO_2(B) than that of anatase TiO_2. In-situ infrared spectrum was measured to identify the intermediates and deduce the conversion process of CO_2 under illumination over TiO_2(B) photocatalyst.

OsPDR20 is an ABCG metal transporter regulating cadmium accumulation in rice

Cadmium(Cd)is a non-essential toxic heavy metal,seriously posing high environmental risks to human health.digging genetic resources relevant to functional genes is important for understanding the metal absorption and accumulation in crops and bioremediation of Cd-polluted environments.This study investigated a functionally uncharacterized ATP binding cassette transporter G family(ABCG)gene encoding a Pleiotropic Drug Resistance 20(PDR20)type metal transporter which is localized to the plasma membrane of rice.OsPDR20 was transcriptionally expressed in almost all tissues and organs in lifespan and was strongly induced in roots and shoots of young rice under Cd stress.Ectopic expression of OsPDR20 in a yeast mutant ycf1 sensitive to Cd conferred cellular tolerance with less Cd accumulation.Knockdown of OsPDR20 by RNA interference(RNAi)moderately attenuated root/shoot elongation and biomass,with reduced chlorophylls in rice grown under hydroponic medium with 2 and 10μmol/L Cd,but led to more Cd accumulation.A field trial of rice grown in a realistic Cd-contaminated soil(0.40 mg/kg)showed that RNAi plants growth and development were also compromised compared to wild-type(WT),with smaller panicles and lower spikelet fertility but little effect on yield of grains.However,OsPDR20 suppression resulted in unexpectedly higher levels of Cd accumulation in rice straw including lower leaves and culm and grain.These results suggest that OsPDR20 is actively involved in Cd accumulation and homeostasis in rice crops.The increased Cd accumulation in the RNAi plants has the potential application in phytoremediation of Cd-polluted wetland soils.

Tuning mechanical behaviors of highly entangled hydrogels with the random distribution of mobile entanglements

Highly entangled hydrogels exhibit excellent mechanical properties,including high toughness,high stretchability,and low hysteresis.By considering the evolution of randomly distributed entanglements within the polymer network upon mechanical stretches,we develop a constitutive theory to describe the large stretch behaviors of these hydrogels.In the theory,we utilize a representative volume element(RVE)in the shape of a cube,within which there exists an averaged chain segment along each edge and a mobile entanglement at each corner.By employing an explicit method,we decouple the elasticity of the hydrogels from the sliding motion of their entanglements,and derive the stress-stretch relations for these hydrogels.The present theoretical analysis is in agreement with experiment,and highlights the significant influence of the entanglement distribution within the hydrogels on their elasticity.We also implement the present developed constitutive theory into a commercial finite element software,and the subsequent simulations demonstrate that the exact distribution of entanglements strongly affects the mechanical behaviors of the structures of these hydrogels.Overall,the present theory provides valuable insights into the deformation mechanism of highly entangled hydrogels,and can aid in the design of these hydrogels with enhanced performance.

Effect of Modulus Heterogeneity on the Equilibrium Shape and Stress Field ofαPrecipitate in Ti-6Al-4V

For media with inclusions(e.g.,precipitates,voids,reinforcements,and others),the difference in lattice parameter and the elastic modulus between the matrix and inclusions cause stress concentration at the interfaces.These stress fields depend on the inclusions’size,shape,and distribution and will respond instantly to the evolving microstructure.This study develops a phase-field model concerningmodulus heterogeneity.The effect of modulus heterogeneity on the growth process and equilibrium state of theαplate in Ti-6Al-4V during precipitation is evaluated.Theαprecipitate exhibits strong anisotropy in shape upon cooling due to the interplay of the elastic strain and interfacial energy.The calculated orientation of the habit plane using the homogeneous modulus ofαphase shows the smallest deviation fromthat of the habit plane observed in the experiment,compared to the case where the homogeneous modulus ofβphase is adopted.In addition,the equilibrium volume ofαphase within the systemusing homogeneousβmodulus exhibits the largest dependency on the applied stresses.The stress fields across theα/βinterface are further calculated under the assumption of modulus heterogeneity and compared to those using homogeneous modulus of eitherαorβphase.This study provides an essential theoretical basis for developing mechanics models concerning systems with heterogeneous structures.

Expanding indications for chronic hepatitis B treatment: Is it really desirable to treat everyone?

Chronic viral hepatitis causes an increased risk of progressive liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma.On the wave of the World Health Organization’s goal to reduce new cases and deaths from hepatitis B and C by 2030,there is an increasing call to expand the indications for treatment of chronic hepatitis B.Currently,the main goal of treatment is to achieve a functional cure due to the inability of current drugs to completely eradicate the virus.There are still many discrepancies between available guidelines in terms of eligibility for treatment as well as an uncertainty about the appropriate treatment duration.This editorial addresses key questions about the topic and whether indications for treatment should be expanded.

Structural characteristics and drivers of greenhouse gas emissions at county-level and long-time scales:A case study of the Anji County,China

To achieve carbon neutrality,the Chinese government needs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources and drivers of greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,particularly at the county level.Anji County in eastern China is a typical example of an industrial transformation from quarrying to a low-carbon economy.This study analyzed the decoupling types and structural characteristics of GHG emissions and the driving factors of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions in the Anji from 2006 to 2019,and explored the differences between countylevel and provincial-level or city-level results.It was observed that energy-related activities are the main source of GHG emissions in Anji and that economic development is the driving factor behind the increasing CO_(2)emissions.However,industrial transformation and upgradation coupled with the alternative use of clean energy limit the growth of GHG emissions.This study details the GHG emissions of county during the industrial transformation stage and provides corresponding policy recommendations for county governments.

High spatiotemporal resolution radiances from the advanced imagers onboard the new generation of geostationary weather satellites provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the abilities of various reanalysis datasets to depict multilayer tropospheric water vapor(WV),thereby enhancing our understanding of the deficiencies of WV in reanalysis datasets.Based on daily measurements from the Advanced Himawari Imager(AHI)onboard the Himawari-8 satellite in 2016,the bias features of multilayer WV from six reanalysis datasets over East Asia are thoroughly evaluated.The assessments show that wet biases exist in the upper troposphere in all six reanalysis datasets;in particular,these biases are much larger in summer.Overall,we find better depictions of WV in the middle troposphere than in the upper troposphere.The accuracy of WV in the ERA5 dataset is the highest,in terms of the bias magnitude,dispersion,and pattern similarity.The characteristics of the WV bias over the Tibetan Plateau are significantly different from those over other parts of East Asia.In addition,the reanalysis datasets all capture the shift of the subtropical high very well,with ERA5 performing better overall.
