Natal dispersal in a social landscape： Considering individual behavioral phenotypes and social environment in dispersal ecology

Natal dispersal, the movement of an organism from its birthplace to the site of first reproduction, is fundamental to many ecological and evolutionary processes. Mechanistically, individual dispersal decisions can depend on both individual phenotype and environmental cues. In particular, many established evolutionary theories of dispersal highlight the importance of the social environment. More recent research in behavioral ecology has focused on the importance of individual behavioral phenotypes. w. review.d the literature on individual behavioral phenotypes and dispersal and suggest that how.individual behavioral phenotypes interact w.th the immediate social environment experienced by individuals in influencing dispersal is still poorly understood, despite grow.ng interest. w. found that very few.studies had examined the interaction of individual behavioral phenotypes and social factors, and behavioral phenotypes related to social tendencies w.re less commonly measured than w.re behavioral phenotypes related to exploration or response to risk. Further, and unsurprisingly, studies on social behavioral phenotypes and dispersal behaviors during the transience stage of dispersal w.re underrepresented compared to the departure or settlement stages. Future studies in this area should aim to: a) make explicit links betw.en behavioral traits and their proposed effects on dispersal decisions throughout multiple stages of dispersal, b) integrate more continuous dispersal variables, and c) consider the effects of the spatial distribution and phenotypes of conspecifics (i.e., the social landscape) encountered by individual dispersers.

Refuge size variation and potential for sperm competition in w.llington tree w.ta

Ecological variation in resources can in flue nee the distributi on and en counter rates of potential mates and competitors and, con sequently, the opport unity for sexual selection. Factors that influence the likelihood that females mate multiply could also affect the potential for sperm competition. In w.llington tree w.ta (Hemideina crassidens, plural "w.ta"), the size of tree cavities (called galleries) used as refuges affects w.ta distribution and thus the opport unity for sexual selection and selection on male w.aponry size. w. examined the predicted effects of gallery size and male w.ap onry size on the potential for sperm competition. w. asked if gallery size in flue need the potential for multiple mating by females and potential for sperm competition, if male w.aponry size w.s associated w.th relative expected sperm competition intensity (SCI), and if estimated male mating success w.s correlated w.th pote ntial SCI. To qua ntify relative competitive envir on merits of males, w. created and analyzed netw.rks of potential competitors based on w.ich males could have mated w.th the same females. w. found that small galleries had higher potential for female multiple mating and higher potential for sperm competition. Size of male w.aponry w.s not associated w.th expected relative SCI. Regardless of gallery size, males w.th more potential mates w.re expected to face low.r expected relative sperm competition. Thus, in this system, variation in the size of available refuges is likely to in flue nee the pote ntial for sperm competiti on, in a w.y that w. might expect to in crease variation in overall reproductive success.
