Natural dissolved organic carbon (DOC) consists of different bio-molecular classes of compounds that are currently very difficult and time-consuming to isolate as individual compounds. However, it is possible to separate natural DOC into hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions. Such characterisation approaches are becoming increasingly important because, over the past 20 years natural DOC concentrations have been rising rapidly in many parts of the world, most likely influenced by climate change. Higher DOC concentrations in drinking water catchments present a serious problem for the water industry because DOC can form disinfection by-products DBPs during water treatment (e.g. chlorination). Hence, there is an urgent need to better characterise natural DOC before, during and after water treatment. However, current DOC fractionation procedures are extremely laborious requiring days and continual manual monitoring to separate sufficient quantities of DOC for subsequent analysis. This seriously limits sample throughput and the parameter space which can be studied. In this paper, we propose a much more rapid semi-automated method (12.5 hours/litre/sample) which utilises readily available equipment, i.e., HPLC pump or similar and sequential columns of Amberlite DAX 8 and XAD 4 resins. The method reduces the manual input from continual attention to minutes. This paper describes the development of the method and its application in the fractionation of natural DOC from reservoir and lake samples fed from upland peat-land catchments. Recoveries are found to be comparable to those using the manual technique, with the dominant component being hydrophobic acid accounting for 35% - 40% of the natural DOC with the second largest, being hydrophilic acid at 20% - 27%.

Background:We sought to assess the overall benefit of laparoscopic versus open hepatectomy for treatment of colorectal liver metastases(CRLMs)using the win ratio,a novel methodological ***:CRLM patients undergoing curative-intent resection in 2001-2018 were identified from an international multi-institutional *** were paired and matched based on age,number and size of lesions,lymph node status and receipt of preoperative *** win ratio was calculated based on margin status,severity of postoperative complications,90-day mortality,time to recurrence,and time to ***:Among 962 patients,the majority underwent open hepatectomy(n=832,86.5%),while a minority underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy(n=130,13.5%).Among matched patient-to-patient pairs,the odds of the patient undergoing laparoscopic resection“winning”were 1.77[WR:1.77,95%confidence interval(CI):1.42-2.34].The win ratio favored laparoscopic hepatectomy independent of low(WR:2.94,95%CI:1.20-6.39),medium(WR:1.56,95%CI:1.16-2.10)or high(WR:7.25,95%CI:1.13-32.0)tumor burden,as well as unilobar(WR:1.71,95%CI:1.25-2.31)or bilobar(WR:4.57,95%CI:2.36-8.64)*** odds of“winning”were particularly pronounced relative to short-term outcomes(i.e.,90-day mortality and severity of postoperative complications)(WR:4.06,95%CI:2.33-7.78).Conclusions:Patients undergoing laparoscopic hepatectomy had 77%increased odds of“winning”.Laparoscopic liver resection should be strongly considered as a preferred approach to resection in CRLM patients.

A composite material is made up of two phases, the matrix, and the reinforcing materials. The reinforcing material is embedded over matrix material. The reinforcing material works to make the matrix material harder. A fibreglass reinforced composite was developed using E-glass fibre reinforcement and epoxy resin matrix. The composites were produced using the hand lay-up technique with varying fibre percentage of 9%, 13% and 25% by weight percentage of fibreglass mat at orientations of 0°, 15°, 45°, and 90° chosen at random. A 13% by weight percentage of chopped mat was also developed for purpose of comparison. The fabricated composites were subjected to tensile test, flexural test, impact test, punch shear test and hardness test to ascertain the appropriate fibre contents and orientation that is optimum for the manufacture of headgears. Analysis of Variance was carried out to determine level of significance and percentage contribution of the parameters. The results show that both fibre orientation and percentage of fibre content reinforcement of have significant influence on the strength and fracture energy of the composite .The fibre orientation has a higher impact on the strength of the composite (79.74%) while the percentage of fibre reinforcement has a lesser impact on the tensile strength of the composite (20.26%). AIM:To evaluate the long-term treatment outcomes of entecavir monotherapy in treatment naive patients in an Australian tertiary care setting. MeTHODS:A retrospective analysis of treatment naive patients receiving entecavir monotherapy through Westmead Hospital was *** were excluded if they had received previous treatment with another nucleoside or nucleotide analogue,were pregnant or less than 18 years old. ReSULTS:Out of 336 patients,163 patients fulfilled the selection *** of follow up was 3-46 mo (mean 26 mo).134 patients(82.2%)had pre-treatment biopsies,with 26 patients(16.0%)demonstrating F3-4 *** total,153 patients(93.9%)achieved at least Partial Virological Suppression(PVS),with 134 patients (82.2%)achieving complete virological suppression. The cumulative CVS and PVS rates at 36 mo were 82.1%and 96.4%,respectively.3 patients(1.8%)failed to achieve PVS,while 5 patients(3.0%)developed virological rebound.128 patients(78.5%)maintained CVS throughout follow *** of CVS included lower baseline DNA level(P=0.001),hepatitis B virus e antigen negative status(P=0.001)and increasing age at treatment(log rank 0.001).No significant adverse effects were reported necessitating cessation of entecavir. BACkGROUND Over 400000 Americans annually undergo spinal fusion surgeries, yet up to 40%of these procedures result in pseudoarthrosis even with iliac crest autograft, the current "gold standard" treatment. Minerals are critical in maintaining health and physiological function in wildlife. Geographic variation in soil and forage mineral concentration may predispose wildlife to mineral imbalances, where a common symptom is restricted somatic growth. We investigated if mineral imbalances could explain localized differences in morphology of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) occurring in geographically proximate sites with similar management, climate, and habitat. We collected serum samples and morphological measurements from free-ranging white-tailed deer captured during 2011-2019 from coastal and inland rangeland sites in South Texas, USA. We measured mineral concentrations in serum from captured deer at each location. Asymptotic deer body mass and antler size averaged 8% - 20% smaller for deer at the coastal compared to the inland site. The proportion of deer with deficient levels of serum copper was greater at the coastal site (66% versus 14%). Our results suggest regional mineral deficiencies in deer may limit antler and body development. Wildlife managers should be aware of all aspects of wildlife nutrition and the importance of considering nutrients beyond energy and protein.

Oxygen consumption is a fundamental component of metabolic networks, mitochondrial function, and global carbon cycling. To date there is no method available that allows for replicate measurements on attached and unattached biological samples without compensation for extraneous oxygen leaking into the system. Here we present the Respiratory Detection System, which is compatible with virtually any biological sample. The RDS can be used to measure oxygen uptake in microliter-scale volumes with a reversibly sealed sample chamber, which contains a porphyrin-based oxygen sensor. With the RDS, one can maintain a diffusional seal for up to three hours, allowing for the direct measurement of respiratory function of samples with fast or slow metabolic rates. The ability to easily measure oxygen uptake in small volumes with small populations or dilute samples has implications in cell biology, environmental biology, and clinical diagnostics.
