Calibration and Confidence in Snowplow Fleet Operations and Fleet Telematics

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) spends approximately $30 to $60 million a year on deicing salt and operates a fleet of 1,000 winter operations trucks distributed among 140 locations. The entire fleet is now instrumented with location telematics, and all new trucks have integrated dash cameras, salt spreader application rate and plow up/plow down integrated into the telematics link. When winter storms occur, they have varying regional impacts and INDOT monitors several data sources including National Weather Service (NWS) live doppler, National Severe Storms Laboratory’s (NSSL) Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) products, road weather monitoring stations, and connected vehicles (CV) that provide roadway segment operating speeds. This paper discusses how telematics has been integrated to provide a comprehensive view of conditions, truck asset locations, and material distribution maps. The telematics identified widely varying salt spreader rates for the same calibration settings and equipment in preliminary analysis. A calibration box is developed to allow offload calibration to occur within 10 minutes without weighing or transporting the fleet vehicle. The method is deployed across six districts at INDOT for over 1000 snowplows. A sampling of eight trucks in the fleet found the proposed calibration method reduced salt application on average of 45%. This paper describes a series of telematics dashboards for managing winter operations and details the methods developed for 140 geographically distributed truck units to conduct simple, fast, and effective calibration.

Characterizing the patient experience during neoadjuvant therapy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma:A qualitative study

The drastic changes in body composition following spinal cord injury(SCI) have been shown to play a significant role in cardiovascular and metabolic health. The pattern of storage and distribution of different types of adipose tissue may impact metabolic health variables similar to carbohydrate, lipid and bone metabolism. The use of magnetic resonance imaging provides insights on the interplay among different regional adipose tissue compartments and their role in developing chronic diseases. Regional adipose tissue can be either distributed centrally or peripherally into subcutaneous and ectopic sites. The primary ectopic adipose tissue sites are visceral, intramuscular and bone marrow. Dysfunction in the central nervous system following SCI impacts the pattern of distribution of adiposity especially between tetraplegia and paraplegia. The current editorial is focused primarily on introducing different types of adipose tissue and establishing scientific basis to develop appropriate dietary, rehabilitation or pharmaceutical interventions to manage the negative consequences of increasing adiposity after SCI. We have also summarized the clinical implications and future recommendations relevant to study adiposity after SCI.

Hydrogeochemical and Multivariate Statistical Techniques to Trace the Sources of Ground Water Contaminants and Affecting Factors of Groundwater Pollution in an Oil and Gas Producing Wetland in Rivers State, Nigeria

Background: Groundwater is an important source of drinking water for the indigenous communities of Ebocha-Obrikom. Access to safe drinking water, in particular, is critical to one’s health and, by extension, one’s income and well-being. Underground wells are the primary supply of drinking water in the Niger Delta, and the groundwater is not always treated before consumption. As a result, water continues to be a vital environmental component that affects both humans and other life forms. Objectives: The aims of the research are to trace the sources and affecting factors of groundwater pollution via statistical and multivariate statistical techniques. Method: The investigation made use of standard analytical procedures. All sampling, conservation, transportation and analysis followed standard procedures described in APHA (2012). To prevent degradation of the organic substances, all obtained samples were transferred to the laboratory, while kept in an icebox. Results: The study reveals that the greater the number of principal components extracted the greater variation in geochemical composition of the ground waters. It indicated that 34 parameters were distributed into six (6) and nine (9) principal components (PCs) extracted for groundwater samples for both rainy and dry seasons, potentially suggesting the input of different pollutants from different sources. Gas flaring, mineral dissolution/precipitation and anthropogenic input are the main sources of the physicochemical indices and trace elements in the groundwater. Groundwater chemistry is predominantly regulated by natural processes such as dissolution of carbonates, silicates, and evaporates and soil leaching, followed by human activities. Climatic factors and land use types are also important in affecting groundwater chemistry. Conclusion: Greater efforts should be made to safeguard groundwater, which is hampered by geogenic and anthropogenic activities, in order to achieve sustainable groundwater development. A

A Computational Comparison between Optimization Techniques for wells Placement Problem: Mathematical Formulations, Genetic Algorithms and Very Fast Simulated Annealing

This study considers several computational techniques for solving one formulation of the wells placement problem (WPP). Usually the wells placement problem is tackled through the combined efforts of many teams using conventional approaches, which include gathering seismic data, conducting real-time surveys, and performing production interpretations in order to define the sweet spots. This work considers one formulation of the wells placement problem in heterogeneous reservoirs with constraints on inter-well spacing. The performance of three different types of algorithms for optimizing the well placement problem is compared. These three techniques are: genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and mixed integer programming (IP). Example case studies show that integer programming is the best approach in terms of reaching the global optimum. However, in many cases, the other approaches can often reach a close to optimal solution with much more computational efficiency.
