Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains from fermented cow milk (nono) sold inUnguwar Rimi, Kaduna markets were isolated on lactic bacteria specific medium (De Man Rogosa Sharpe MRS media). Isolated strains were identified and characterized using morphological, biochemical test and carbohydrate fermentation system (API-50 CHL). Six (6) pure colonies were distinctly obtained and identified as Lactobacillus strains. Out of the 6 isolated Lactobacilli, 5 were further identified as Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. lactis 2, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus 2 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. They were further screened for antimicrobial activity and antibiotic sensitivity. Lactobacillus acidophilus had higher resistance to all but one of the antibiotics used (Chloramphenicol 30 μg) with no zone of inhibition to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Gentamycin, Penicillin, Streptomycin and Tetracycline. The antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli exhibited varying degree of inhibitory activity. It can be concluded that the presence of these microorganisms in fermented cow milk (nono) is of great benefits to humans and animals either as supplements or food production processes.

This study was conducted to assess the occurrence and nature of extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from patients who presented with urinary tract infection at Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe. Isolates collected were recovered on MacConkey agar at 35°C and were identified as members of Enterobacteriaceae, and further screened for antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance by disc diffusion method. Isolates resistant to oxyimino-cephalosporins were confirmed as ESBL producers using Double Disks Synergy Test (DDST). The study shows 66% resistance to ceftriaxone (30 μg) in K. pneumoniae, which was the highest value recorded and a 51% resistance to cefpodoxime (10 μg) in E. coli. The sensitivity of E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates to cefpodoxime (10 μg) were 49% and 33.9% respectively. ESBLs were detected among 40% (40/100) of E. coli and 54.13% (59/109) of K. pneumoniae isolates. Molecular characterization of ESBL encoding genes among E. coli isolates using multiplex-PCR showed 10% prevalence of SHV gene and 5% prevalence for CTX-M gene while TEM gene was not detected. In K. pneumoniae isolates, 5% prevalence was recorded for each of the three genes screened. The study revealed a co-occurrence of SHV and CTX-M in 75% of the E. coli and 70% of the K. pneumoniae isolates;the occurrence of all the three genes was seen in 10% and 5% of K. pneumoniae and E. coli respectively. Multiplex-PCR method provided an efficient and rapid detection of ESBL related genes, hence could be used in epidemiological studies among ESBL isolates. Monitoring dissemination and transmissions of ESBL producers are highly recommended for optimum patient care and preventing the spread of multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens.

Studies around the world have shown that vegetation cover is undergoing a dramatic change at various scales. Vegetation is a very important component of the ecosystem, its destruction by whatever means will have an adverse effect on the functional role it plays in the environment. Hence, it is necessary to monitor, conserve and utilize these vital resources sustainably. This study monitors vegetation dynamics in Mubi region with the view to understand the status of vegetation cover and suggest possible conservation measures. The study used regression differencing method of change detection to identify the status and dynamics of vegetation cover in the region. Landsat satellite images were used to create Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using IDRISI software. The NDVI images were subjected to diverse analysis ranging from image registration to image regression, differencing and thresholding. The results from these analysis shows that vegetation cover in the region has witnessed unprecedented degradation. In the period between 1987 and 1999 (12 years) the area that experienced depletion in vegetation cover in the region was 10,501.42 hectares while the period between 1999 and 2015 (16 years) witnessed further depletion to 32,701.77 hectares. The areas that experienced restoration in vegetation cover in the region from the period between 1999 and 2015 (24,098.94 hectares) have lower areal extent compared with the period between 1987 and 1999 (44,045.80 hectares). This phenomenon is not unconnected with population growth as the region has witnessed explosive growth in the recent past. This growth in population has resulted in higher demand for food to feed the growing population thereby leading to expansion of farmland. Analysis of the design and performance characteristics of pumpable roof supports

Pumpable roof supports are currently being used to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining. Because different pumpable supports are visually similar and installed fundamentally in the same manner as other supports, there is a tendency to believe they all perform the same way. However, there are several design parameters that can affect their performance, including the cementitious material properties and the bag construction practices that influence the degree of confinement provided. A full understanding of the impact of these design parameters is necessary to optimize the support application and to provide a foundation for making further improvements in the support performance. This paper evaluates the impact of various support design parameters by examining full-scale performance tests conducted using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator(MRS) as part of manufacturers' developmental and quality control testing. These tests were analyzed to identify correlations between the support design parameters and the resulting performance. Based on more than 160 tests over 7 years, quantifiable patterns were examined to assess the correlation between the support dimensions, cementitious material type, wire pitch, and single-wall vs. dualwalled bag designs to the support capacity, stiffness, load shedding events, and yield characteristics.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are the most known genera of the therapeutic niche of organisms that have developed various defense mechanisms through their antioxidative activity which help mitigate the abnormality caused by reactive oxygen species to cell ***,for these probiotic organisms to exert their beneficial effects,the need to enhance functionality and protect bacterial cells in the gastrointestinal tract requires an efficient method for a better selection of favorable fermentation conditions with a sufficient yield of desired property or *** we reported the potential and antioxidant activities of isolated probiotic strains,with a considerable viable cell count between 10^(8) and 10^(9) CFU/mL,as the pH of both fermented millet substrate decreased from 6.13 to 3.62 at 35℃ within 14 h using a statistical optimization *** identified strains Pediococcus pentosaceus RZ01 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei RZ02 alongside the refer-ence strain had an overall gastrointestinal tolerance of 60%under simulated conditions,with Pediococcus pentosaceus RZ01 showing the highest bile salt survival rate(123.07%).Lactobacillus paracasei RZ02 indicates a high hydrophobicity potential(86.48%),suggesting a better adhesion ability to the gastrointestinal ***,Pediococcus pentosaceus RZ01 and Lactobacillus paracasei RZ02 fermented substrate had 39.69 and 44.51%of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)radical scavenging activity,with the release of bioactive compounds of health *** provide important references for formulating novel probiotic fermented cereal product,understanding of probiotic-prebiotic relationship,as well as pave way for biotechnological application of identified and related probiotics.

This study evaluates the role of shelterbelts on the development and dynamics of vegetation in relation to livelihoods in the study area using geo-information techniques. The study covered the period between 1972 and 2007. The results show that in 1972 vegetation cover in the study area extended over an area of 6955 hectares (i.e.?shrubs, grasses and trees) which represents 65% of the area;however there was a decrease in 1986 to an area of 5779 hectares (54%). Despite the establishment of shelterbelt in the area in 1987, the trend did not change. This is obvious in the reduction of vegetation cover between 1986 and 2000 to a total area of 3893 hectares (37%). The vegetation cover further decreased to 2791 hectares (26%) in 2005 and 1659 hectares (16%) in 2007 respectively. The study concludes that the establishment of shelterbelts alone cannot guarantee the success of vegetation cover development in the area without a sustainable plan which recognizes the local communities as critical stakeholders. Thus, variables like population growth and GDP have a role to play in vegetation cover depletion. The study recommends that efforts geared towards enlightenment of the local communities on the need for conservation should be encouraged by Government and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Crude oil transportation through pipelines presents danger to communities along its path. In the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for instance, pipeline vandalism occurs indiscriminately and regularly, such that every segment of a pipeline network becomes a potential target and possibly source of oil spill hazard. In terms of pipeline hazard and risk distribution, the oil plume’s ability to migrate freely in wetlands and encroachment on pipeline right of ways by people increases chances of wider contact and exposure opportunities to inhabitants and the environment. Despite several efforts to mitigate pipeline hazards in the oil and gas sector, none has been effective in Nigeria partly due to paucity of data in public domain and poor public participation. Therefore considering the environmental and human health challenges associated with oil spills, an alternative method was developed using multi-criteria decision analysis to model 1) pipeline hazard zones, 2) potential pipeline impact radius, and 3) high consequence areas with four attribute layers, i.e. land cover, population, river and pipeline to encourage public participation. The model identified land use areas, communities and rivers likely to be susceptible to pipeline hazards and areas requiring regular monitoring and possible intervention. Meanwhile the model sensitivity test indicated that the river layer was most sensitive, while transferability was limited to similar criteria variables. The model can stimulate public participation in pipeline hazard management while policy makers and regulators would find it relevant in oil spill impact mitigation.
