The potential impact of a“curative intervention”for HIV:a modelling study

Abstract background:Efforts to develop an HIV“cure”(i.e.,an intervention leading to durable ART-free remission or eradication of HIV infection)have become better resourced and coordinated in recent ***,however,the availability of other interventions for prevention and treatment of HIV disease,it is unclear whether,to what extent,and under which circumstances a curative intervention would have an impact in ending the AIDS epidemic and which characteristics of its implementation would be most *** designed a range of analyses to investigate these ***:We used a deterministic,compartmental model of HIV infection in South Africa to estimate the impact of a curative *** first examined how its impact would be affected by the state of the epidemic at the time that it is introduced,by the timing and pace of scale-up,and by various targeting *** then investigated the impact of a curative intervention relative to its ability to maintain viral ***:To the extent that other interventions have failed to control the epidemic,i.e.,if incidence and AIDS deaths remain high,a curative intervention would result in a larger reduction in *** and faster scale-up allows for greater *** also found that a curative intervention would more efficiently reduce transmission if it is prioritised to those not able to obtain or remain on ART and to those aged 15-25 rather than older *** the other hand,an intervention that does not maintain viral suppression if the individual is exposed to re-infection could lead to an increase in HIV ***:Our findings suggest that a curative intervention for HIV would have the greatest impact if the epidemic is not under control by 2030,particularly if the intervention is targeted to those who are more likely to transmit virus,and if it maintained durable viral suppression,even upon exposure to *** considerations underscore the need to carefu

Phagocytosis of optically-trapped particles: delivery of the pure phagocytic signal

Phagocytosis is a fundamental cell biological process exhibited by a wide variety of cell types from single cell organ-isms,which rely on this for feeding,to phagocytes in higher animals,which rely on specialised immune cells for com-bating infecting *** the immune system,both macrophages and neutrophils play roles as *** are often called"professional phagocytes"because of their remarkable capacity for phagocytosis,beingable to internalise microscopic particles(diam 0.5-3 μm)of virtually any surface *** efficiency and speedof phagocytosis is,however,increased by coating the surface of the particles with opsonins such as antibodies or thecomplement component C3bi(acting on β2 integrin receptors),and C3bi-accelerated phagocytosis by neutrophils is thefirst line of defence by the innate immune system in vivo,operating in advance of the slower production of *** the mechanism of phagocytosis is,therefore,clearly an important goal.

Effects of cucumber mosaic virus-infected chilli plants on non-vector bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera Aleyrodidae)

Plant virus infections are known to alter host plant attractiveness and suitability for insect *** study was conducted to determine how cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)-infected chilli plants affect the fitness and settling preferences ofnonvector whitefly,bemisia tabaci adults under dual-choice conditions with volatile organic compounds analyzed using solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Results showed that the presence of CIVIV in chilli plants substantially affects the settling preferences of the ***,which preferred to settle on noninfected *** of the egg stage and the longevity and fecundity of adult *** on CMV-infected chilli plants were not markedly different from those on noninfected chilli *** contrast,the developmental time from egg to adult was significantly reduced in CMV-infected chilli plants compared to the noninfected *** results also showed that CMV-infected chilli plants released significantly more linalool and phenylacetaldehyde than noninfected ***,it was suggested that the behavioral response of *** might be modified by CMV-infected plants,which alter the release of specific headspace *** on these results,the modification of plant volatile profiles may help in enhancing the effectiveness of biological control and the protection of crop plants against ***.

There has been a growing appreciation for freezing of gait as a disabling symptom that causes a significant burden in Parkinson’s disease. Previous research has highlighted some of the key components that underlie the phenomenon, but these reductionist approaches have yet to lead to a paradigm shift resulting in the development of novel treatment strategies. Addressing this issue will require greater integration of multi-modal data with complex computational modeling, but there are a number of critical aspects that need to be considered before embarking on such an approach. This paper highlights where the field needs to address current gaps and shortcomings including the standardization of definitions and measurement, phenomenology and pathophysiology, as well as considering what available data exist and how future studies should be constructed to achieve the greatest potential to better understand and treat this devastating symptom.

Update on Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

　　Prevention The best treatment is to prevent the illness in the first place or to retard its progression. There is considerable new information about Parkinson's disease genetics and pathophysiology that hopefully will lead to therapy in this regard, but there is still nothing definitive. The only medication for which there are some reasonable data is selegiline, a monoamine oxidase (MAO)-b inhibitor. This drug actually has a symptomatic effect since it prevents the breakdown ofdopamine in the brain. Some trials have shown a beneficial effect separate from its symptomatic effect. The situation is rather controversial, however, and in one study there was an excess of mortality. {4}There are no supportive data for antioxidants such as vitamin E, and a trial of the neurotrophic factor GDNF was not positive.　　……
