Electrocatalytic hydrogen peroxide formation on mesoporous non-metal nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst

Direct electrochemical formation of hydrogen peroxide（H2O2） from pure O2 and H2on cheap metal-free earth abundant catalysts has emerged as the highest atom-efficient and environmentally friendly reaction pathway and is therefore of great interest from an academic and industrial point of view. Very recently,novel metal-free mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts have attracted large attention due to the unique reactivity and selectivity for the electrochemical hydrogen peroxide formation [1–3]. In this work,we provide deeper insights into the electrocatalytic activity, selectivity and durability of novel metal-free mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst for the peroxide formation with a particular emphasis on the influence of experimental reaction parameters such as p H value and electrode potential for three different electrolytes. We used two independent approaches for the investigation of electrochemical hydrogen peroxide formation, namely rotating ring-disk electrode（RRDE） technique and photometric UV–VIS technique. Our electrochemical and photometric results clearly revealed a considerable peroxide formation activity as well as high catalyst durability for the metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst material in both acidic as well as neutral medium at the same electrode potential under ambient temperature and pressure. In addition, the obtained electrochemical reactivity and selectivity indicate that the mechanisms for the electrochemical formation and decomposition of peroxide are strongly dependent on the p H value and electrode potential.

Background: Scrotal trauma is a rare injury, and can compromise reproductive function. If in closed trauma, a morphological assessment of the lesion is usually necessary before treatment, in open trauma otherwise, namely in the case of testicular evisceration, surgical exploration is the rule. Objective: To present the management of open scrotal trauma. Case Presentation: These were two adults aged 42 and 63, admitted for post-traumatic testicular evisceration. One of the patients presented with signs of infection due to a diagnosis delay. Management consisted on surgical exploration, with scrotal debridement and testicular reintegration. The evolution was favourable. Conclusion: Open scrotal trauma is a rare lesion that can cause testicular evisceration. It requires surgical exploration, which should be systematic.

Background: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of prenatal nutritional supplements has mainly considered anthropometric pregnancy outcomes. The effect on markers of health and disease， such as offspring telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc) is unknown. Objectives: We assessed the efficacy of maternal multiple micronutrient (MMN)-fortified balanced-energy protein (BEP) and iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation on newborn TL as a secondary outcome and mtDNAc as a non-declared outcome. Design: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Burkina Faso， among pregnant females (15-40 years old) enrolled at 0.05) by adjusting the regression models for potential prognostic factors of study outcomes at enrollment. Exploratory analyses indicated higher， but non-significantly different mtDNAc among children born either small-for-gestational age， low birthweight， or preterm. Conclusions: Newborns from mothers who received daily nutritional supplements across gestation did not have different relative TL or mtDNAc.

Three-dimensional FDEM numerical simulation of failure processes observed in Opalinus Clay laboratory samples

This study presents the first step of a research project that aims at using a three-dimensional （3D） hybridfinite-discrete element method （FDEM） to investigate the development of an excavation damaged zone（EDZ） around tunnels in a clay shale formation known as Opalinus Clay. The 3D FDEM was first calibratedagainst standard laboratory experiments, including Brazilian disc test and uniaxial compression test. Theeffect of increasing confining pressure on the mechanical response and fracture propagation of the rockwas quantified under triaxial compression tests. Polyaxial （or true triaxial） simulations highlighted theeffect of the intermediate principal stress （s2） on fracture directions in the model： as the intermediateprincipal stress increased, fractures tended to align in the direction parallel to the plane defined by themajor and intermediate principal stresses. BACKGROUND This case study describes an atypical presentation of avascular necrosis(AVN)of the first metatarsal head,which is largely unfounded in the *** SUMMARY A healthy 24-year-old female initially presented with pain at the first metatarsophalangeal joint(MTPJ)and was diagnosed with AVN by physical examination and magnetic resonance *** patient demonstrated atypically poor progress in recovery,despite being in otherwise good health and being of young age,with no history of corticosteroid or alcohol *** patient also did not have any history or clinical features of autoimmune disease or vasculitis,such as systemic lupus *** patient was managed with conservative treatment for 18 mo,which allowed for gradual return of full range of motion of the first MTPJ and subsiding pain,permitting the patient to return to highintensity sports training and full *** her recovery,many differential diagnoses were ruled out through specific investigations leading to further reinforcement of the diagnosis of AVN of the 1st metatarsal *** Atypical AVN may occur with no predisposing risk *** is mainly conservative,with unclear guidelines in literature on management.

The Epidemiological Profil of Digestive Cancers in Secondary and Tertiary Health Care Facilities in Cameroon

Background: Cancers have been a major public health problem in developing countries in recent years. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiological profile of digestive cancers in secondary and tertiary health care facilities in Cameroon. Methodology: This was a cross sectional and descriptive study conducted over a period of 12 months in 14 health structures over the national territory. Included in our study were patients aged 15 and above with a histologically proven digestive cancer, patients with a clinical, biological and morphologic evidence of a digestive cancer. Socio-demographic (age, gender, region of origin, profession), clinical (symptoms on diagnosis, personal and family past history, consumption habits, tumour location) and paraclinical data were recorded on a pretested questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20.0. Quantitative data was expressed as means with their corresponding standard deviations. Chi square was used for correlation between variables. A P value 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Five hundred and eighty-two cases of digestive cancers were recorded out of 37,780 consultations/admissions during the study period giving a prevalence of 1.5% with a male predominance (58.1%). The mean age was 53.11 ± 17.26 years (15 - 99) with 33.8% of them below 45 years of age. Tumours were predominantly localized in the liver (43.5%) and colon (24.9%). Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological type in 44.5% of all cases. Alcohol consumption was found to be associated with colorectal cancer (p = 0.028) while tobacco consumption was found to be significantly associated with oesophageal cancer (p ≤ 0.001) and gastric cancer (p = 0.0047). Conclusion: A third of patients with digestive cancers were aged less than 45 years suggesting an early onset of these cancers in our setting. Relatively low prevalence with the liver being the most common site of localisation in our setting.

Evaluation of Drought Stress-Inducible W<i>si</i>18 Promoter in <i>Brachypodium distachyon</i>

The rice Wsi18 promoter confers drought-inducible gene expression. This property makes it a useful candidate to drive relevant genes for developing drought resistant traits for different monocot crops. In this study, we showed that the Bradi2G47700 gene, the closest homologue to rice Wsi18, was upregulated in Brachypodium distachyon plants exposed to ABA and mannitol. Wsi18: uidA transgenic B. distachyon plants were produced and then subjected to ABA or mannitol treatment. The expression of uidA in three transgenic lines (line 10, 18 and 37) was significantly upregulated in plants exposed to ABA (fold increases of 5.61 ± 0.98, 2.88 ± 0.75 and 9.13 ± 1.96, respectively) compared to the same transgenic plant lines without treatment. The expression of uidA in two transgenic lines (lines 18 and 37) also showed upregulation when treated with mannitol (fold increases of 4.43 ± 1.07 and 8.47 ± 2.90, respectively) compared to the same transgenic plant lines without mannitol treatment. Moreover, GUS histochemical assay showed increased Wsi18 promoter activity in the leaves and stems of transgenic lines upon treatment with ABA or mannitol. This is the first report of the drought inducible rice Wsi18 promoter being active in B. distachyon which is a model plant for molecular biology research of various monocot plants. Taken together, the results indicate that the Wsi18 promoter and its homologue may be explored as a useful tool for drought stress-inducible gene expression in different monocot crops.
