GekkoFS—A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications

Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing(HPC)to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today's HPC environments have to cope with new access *** patterns include many metadata operations,small I/O requests,or randomized file I/O,while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large *** buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary *** aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel file system without interfering with ***,burst buffer file systems typically offer many features that a scientific application,running in isolation for a limited amount of time,does not *** present GekkoFS,a temporary,highly-scalable file system which has been specifically optimized for the aforementioned use *** provides relaxed POSIX semantics which only offers features which are actually required by most(not all)*** is,therefore,able to provide scalable I/O performance and reaches millions of metadata operations already for a small number of nodes,significantly outperforming the capabilities of common parallel file systems.

Despite a large number of studies examining the effects of abiotic stress factors on plants,the mechanistic explanations of drought-induced tree mortality remain inconclusive and even less is known about how multiple stressors *** role of non-structural carbohydrates(NSCs)in preventing or postponing drought mortality is gaining ***,we tested the role of NSCs in mitigating the effects of drought and salinity in New Zealand mangroves,Avicennia marina *** experimentally manipulated plant NSC levels,prior to subjecting them to combinations of drought and *** growth and survival rates were 2-and 3-fold higher in the high-NSC(H-NSC)group than in the low-NSC(L-NSC)group under high salinity and drought conditions,*** 12 weeks under high salinity-high drought conditions,the H-NSC group showed higher stem hydraulic conductivity(281±50 mmol cm^(−1)s^(−1)MPa^(−1))compared with the L-NSC group(134±40 mmol cm^(−1)s^(−1)MPa^(−1)).Although starch levels remained relatively constant,we found a 20%increase in soluble sugars in the stems of H-NSC group under high drought and high salinity in week 8 compared with week *** results suggest(i)an important role of NSCs in mitigating the effects of low soil water potential caused by drought and salinity,and(ii)sink-limited growth under conditions of combined salinity and drought.

Eye tracking is growing in popularity for multiple application areas,yet analysing and exploring the large volume of complex data remains difficult for most *** present a comprehensive eye tracking visual analytics system to enable the exploration and presentation of eye-tracking data across time and space in an efficient *** application allows the user to gain an overview of general patterns and perform deep visual analysis of local gaze *** ability to link directly to the video of the underlying scene allows the visualisation insights to be verified on the *** system was motivated by the need to analyse eye-tracking data collected from an‘in the wild’study with energy network operators and has been further evaluated via interviews with 14 eye-tracking experts in multiple *** suggest that,thanks to state-of-the-art visualisation techniques and by providing context with videos,our system could enable an improved analysis of eye-tracking data through interactive exploration,facilitating comparison between different participants or conditions,thus enhancing the presentation of complex data analysis to *** research paper provides four contributions:(1)analysis of a motivational use case demonstrating the need for rich visual-analytics workflow tools for eye-tracking data;(2)a highly dynamic system to visually explore and present complex eye-tracking data;(3)insights from our applied use case evaluation and interviews with experienced users demonstrating the potential for the system and visual analytics for the wider eye-tracking community.

We synthesized a quasi-two-dimensional distorted triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ca3CoNb2O9, in which the effective spin of Co2＋is 1/2 at low temperatures, whose magnetic properties were studied by dc susceptibility and magnetization techniques. The x-ray diffraction confirms the quality of our powder samples. The large Weiss constant θCW --55 K and the low Neel temperature TN- 1.45 K give a frustration factor f =｜ θCW/TN｜≈ 38, suggesting that Ca3 Co Nb2O9resides in strong frustration regime. Slightly below TN, deviation between the susceptibility data under zero-field cooling（ZFC）and field cooling（FC） is observed. A new magnetic state with 1/3 of the saturate magnetization Ms is suggested in the magnetization curve at 0.46 K. Our study indicates that Ca3 Co Nb2O9is an interesting material to investigate magnetism in triangular lattice antiferromagnets with weak anisotropy.

Circa 1.78 Ga mafic dyke swarms and some coeval volcanic associations constitute a large Igneous Province in the central North China *** 1st generation of dykes intruded at ca.1780 Ma and is chemically delineated into 3 groups:the LT Group is gabbroic and has low-Fe-Ti contents,acting as parental magma;the NW Group is high in Fe-Ti-contents and doleritic with an iron-enriched trend;whereas the EW Group is doleritic to andesitic and crystallized from relict siliceous liquids with a silica-enriched *** have an EM-I type source and record integral magmatic *** include contamination of lithospheric material and assimilation of crustal melts with in-situ crystallization in a magma chamber(the LT Group) and fractional crystallization in magma channels(the NW Group) and even with additional alteration(the EW Group). The 2nd generation is slightly younger(ca.1760 Ma) and scarcely *** has high-Fe-Ti contents,originated from a mixing source of DM and EM-I *** dykes could be associated with a palaeo-plurne:the 1st generation represents lower mantle melts generated from the plume head,whereas the 2nd generation records extra melts from astherosphere entrained by the plume tail.

＜正＞One of the challenges in the study of signal transduction pathways in neurons is to understand the way in which signals are restricted to subcellular compartments and how different signaling pathways interact. To explore these issues, we are investigating the role of A kinase anchoring proteins （AKAPs） in Drosophila olfactory learning and memory. AKAPs localize PKA specific subcellular locations and assemble PKA into signaling modules that include phosphodiesterases, phosphatases, ion channels and receptors. 基于1979—2016年NCEP-NCAR逐日再分析资料研究了热带季节内振荡(MJO)和北半球冬季高纬地区地表气温(SAT)之间的联系。利用实时多变量MJO(RMM)指数,将MJO分为8个位相,其中位相2(位相6)对应于位于印度洋地区的正(负)对流。不同MJO位相下的SAT合成结果显示MJO第二位相后的5~15 d,北半球高纬地区(60°~90°N、180°~60°W)有明显的负SAT异常;由于热带异常加热信号的改变,在MJO第六位相后的5~15 d该地区则对应于显著的正SAT异常。该地区温度的垂直结构在各个位相下也表现出类似的分布特征。合成的500 hPa位势高度异常场显示,在温度负(正)异常的位相对应有明显的位势高度负(正)异常,这种环流异常主要是由与热带对流异常相联系的向东北方向传播的罗斯贝波列所引起的。通过对波活动通量的计算,推断该东北方向传播的罗斯贝波列很可能是罗斯贝波能量频散的结果。合成的700 hPa比湿异常场和SAT之间在存在着较好的对应关系,考虑到对流层中层的比湿与向下长波辐射之间存在着正相关关系,说明该温度异常也可能与辐射过程相关。上述分析表明与MJO对流相关的大尺度环流异常对高纬地区季节内SAT变率有重要影响,该异常SAT信号可能来自平流输送和辐射过程等。准确把握MJO位相与SAT异常信号的联系也可以为北半球高纬地区SAT的延伸期预报提供一些可靠线索。

Drought has serious effects on the physiology of cereal crops. At the cellular and specifically the metabolite level, many individual compounds are increased to provide osmoprotective functions, prevent the dissociation of enzymes, and to decrease the number of reactive oxygen species present in the cell. We have used a targeted GC-MS approach to identify compounds that differ in three different cultivars of bread wheat characterized by different levels of tolerance to drought under drought stress （Kukri, intolerant; Excalibur and RAC875, tolerant）. Levels of amino acids, most notably proline, tryptophan, and the branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine were increased under drought stress in all cultivars. In the two tolerant cultivars, a small decrease in a large number of organic acids was also evident. Excalibur, a cultivar genotypically related to Kukri, showed a pattern of response that was more similar to Kukri under well-watered conditions. Under drought stress, Excalibur and RAC875 had a similar response; however, Excalibur did not have the same magnitude of response as RAC875. Here, the results are discussed in the context of previous work in physiological and proteomic analyses of these cultivars under drought stress.
