Temperature relations of aerial and aquatic physiological performance in a mid-intertidal limpet Cellana toreuma: Adaptation to rapid changes in thermal stress during emersion

The physiological performance of a mid-intertidal limpet Cellana toreuma was determined to study the physiological adaptation of intertidal animals to rapid changes and extreme temperatures during emersion.The relationship between the Arrhenius breakpoint temperature(ABT)and in situ operative body temperature was studied to predict the possible impact of climate change on the species.The temperature coefficient(Q10)of emersed animals was higher than that of submersed animals and the ratio of aerial:aquatic heart rate rose with increasing temperature.The ABTs of submersed and emersed animals were 30.2 and 34.2°C,respectively.The heart rate and levels of molecular biomarkers(hsps,ampkα,ampkβand sirt1 mRNA)were determined in 48 h simulated semi-diurnal tides.There were no obvious changes of heart rate and gene expression during the transition between emersion and submersion at room temperature,although expressions of hsp70 and hsp90 were induced significantly after thermal stress.These results indicate that C.toreuma can effectively utilize atmospheric oxygen,and the higher Q10 and ABT of emersed animals are adaptations to the rapid change and extreme thermal stress during emersion.However,the in situ operative body temperature frequently exceeds the aerial ABT of C.toreuma,indicating the occurrence of large-scale mortality of C.toreuma in summer,and this species should be sensitive to increasing temperature in the scenario of climate change.

Radionuclides accidentally released from nuclear power plants,such as ^(137)Cs and ^(60)Co,can lead to severe contamination of marine ecosystems.Living macroalgae are effi cient in absorbing metal elements from seawater.A 10-day simulation was conducted to assess the potential of scavenging cesium(Cs)and cobalt(Co)with live U lva prolifera that was cultured in seawater medium containing Cs and Co in diff erent concentrations(0(the control),10,20,50,and 100 mg/L).In the experiment,5 kg(fresh weight)of U.prolifera was cultured in natural seawater in 90-L tanks.Results showed that after the experiment,the average bioconcentration factors(BCFs)of the control group were 247.2 and 1126.4 for Cs and Co,respectively.The absolute absorption quantity of U.prolifera increased and the BCFs decreased with the increase in Cs and Co concentrations.The biosorption of the two metals on the fi rst day well fi t the pseudo-second-order equation(R^(2)>0.95),indicating that adsorption is the rate-limiting step in the total biosorption process.Concentrations of both metal ions declined signifi cantly in the fi rst hour and decreased by 25.2%and 15.5%in 48 h,respectively.Therefore,live U.prolifera is effi cient at scavenging Cs and Co in seawater,providing potential applications for the phytoremediation of radionuclides contaminated seawaters.

Hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),oxygen evolution reaction(OER),and oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)serve as the most promising electrochemical processes for renewable energy.Developing multifunctional electrocatalysts with high performance for HER,OER and ORR still remains a challenge.Herein,we report a facile method to prepare P,N-co-doped porous carbon encapsulated Fe-CoP(A-FeCoP/CPN)electrocatalyst through freeze drying,carbonization,and KOH activation.The acquired A-FeCoP/CPN possesses abundant pores with large surface area,which provides sufficient defect-rich sites for HER,OER,and ORR,in alkaline or acidic electrolytes.The A-Fe-CoP/CPN shows low overpotential and good stability for HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte.Density functional theory(DFT)computations reveal that the addition of Fe greatly facilitates the rate-determining step and overall catalytic pathway for both HER and OER.A-Fe-CoP/CPN also exhibits low half-wave potential(E1/2)for ORR,which indicates an enhanced performance than that of the noble Pt/C catalyst.Zn-air battery equipped with the A-Fe-CoP/CPN catalyst exhibits a high energy density(849 m Ah g^(-1))and a long-time stability at 5 m A cm^(-2).This finding not only offers a facile strategy to prepare porous carbon materials with defect-rich sites,but also provides guidance for developing multifunctional electrocatalysts for wide electrochemical reactions.

Electrochemical catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) have attracted increasing attentions. Noble metal-free cocatalysts play a vital role in HER applications. Herein, a novel strategy to prepare a Ni_(2)P/MoS_(2) cocatalyst through a simple hydrothermal-phosphorization method was reported, and the prepared cocatalyst was then loaded on an N-doped carbon substrate with excellent conductive performance. The large surface area of the carbon substrate provided many active sites, and the interface between Ni_(2)P and MoS_(2) improved the catalytic performance for the HER. Compared with pure Ni_(2)P catalyst and MoS_(2) catalyst, the prepared Ni_(2)P/MoS_(2) cocatalyst exhibited enhanced catalytic performance. In addition, the results indicate that the prepared cocatalyst has a wide p H range and low onset potential values of 280, 350 and40 m V in acidic, phosphate-buffered saline and alkaline solutions, respectively, and the corresponding Tafel slopes are 75, 121 and 95 mV dec^(-1),respectively. Density functional theory(DFT) was adopted to calculate the hydrogen adsorption free energy(ΔG_(H)^(*)). The results showed that the interface between Ni_(2)P and MoS_(2) reduced ΔG_H^(*), which was beneficial to the adsorption of hydrogen. Present preparation of cocatalysts with unique interfaces provides a new strategy for improving the catalytic performance of HER.

润滑油在工业中的有着重要作用,但其中的水分会影响设备性能和使用寿命。传统的水分去除方法效率低、成本高。静电脱水技术可以通过电场作用将水润滑油中从分离出,利用电场促进油水液滴的碰撞和凝聚,具有快速、高效、环保等优点。本论文利用COMSOL软件对油包水乳液中两个液滴的碰撞聚集进行数值模拟,研究微米级液滴直流电场作用下电场强度、温度、粒径、和液滴间距等因素对碰撞和聚结行为的影响规律,研究表明随着电场强度增大,液滴聚结时间快速变小,但电场强度超过一定值时影响减弱;随着温度的升高,液滴聚结时间先急剧减少,到一定值后基本趋于稳定;随着粒径增大,液滴聚并总时间随液滴直径先缓慢增加,当粒径超过一定值时急聚增加;随着液滴间距增大,聚结总时间不断增大,本文为静电脱水的机理研究提供理论依据,为高效破乳脱水装置的设计提供技术支撑。

以华南地区9种木质藤本和5种草质藤本为研究对象,通过测量全阳和荫蔽环境下2类藤本叶性状指标,研究其叶性状差异及相关性,分析其叶经济谱并探讨2类藤本对不同光环境的适应性策略及应用。结果表明:14种藤本植物在不同光环境中表现出不同的适应策略,总体表现为采取SLA升高、LT降低、LWC提升、LDMC降低等策略来适应荫蔽环境。草质藤本的SLA极显著高于木质藤本,而木质藤本的LDMC极显著高于草质藤本,草质藤本在叶经济谱中更倾向于“快速投资−收益”型物种,木质藤本则更倾向于“缓慢投资−收益”型物种。叶功能性状SLA、LNC、LD、LDMC、LWC间紧密相关,表现出SLA与LDMC、LD呈极显著负相关,与LNC、LWC呈极显著正相关的权衡关系。聚类结果显示,绿萝和合果芋为耐荫植物,五爪金龙、鸡矢藤、珊瑚藤、玉叶金花、炮仗花、锦屏藤、冬红为中性偏阳植物,鹰爪花、络石、软枝黄蝉、叶子花、白花油麻藤为喜阳植物。

Colorless‐to‐black switching has attracted widespread attention for smart windows and multifunctional displays because they are more useful to control solar energy.However,it still remains a challenge owing to the tremendous difficulties in the design of completely reverse absorptions in transmissive and colored states.Herein,we report on an electrochemical device that can switch between colorless and black by using the electrochemical process of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite MAPbBr_(3),which shows a high integrated contrast ratio of up to 73%from 400 to 800 nm.The perovskite solution can be used as the active layer to assemble the device,showing superior transmittance over the entire visible region in neutral states.By applying an appropriate voltage,the device undergoes reversible switching between colorless and black,which is attributed to the formation of lead and Br_(2)in the redox reaction induced by the electron transfer process in MAPbBr_(3).In addition,the contrast ratio can be modulated over the entire visible region by changing the concentration and the applied voltage.These results contribute toward gaining an insightful understanding of the electrochemical process of perovskites and greatly promoting the development of switchable devices.

Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Ulva lactuca, Grateloupia turuturu and Palmaria palmata are suitable species that fit the requirements of a seaweed-animal integrated aquaculture system in terms of their viable biomass, rapid growth and promising nutrient uptake rates. In this investigation, the responses of the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield of the five algal species in tumble culture were assessed at a temperature range of 10 - 30℃. The results revealed that Ulva lactuca was the most resistant species to high temperature, withstanding 30℃ for 4 h without apparent decline in the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield . While the arctic alga Palmaria palmata was the most vulnerable one, showing significant decline in the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield at 25℃ for 2 h. The cold-water species Laminaria japonica, however, demonstrated strong ability to cope with higher temperature （24 -26℃ ） for shorter time （within 24 h） without significant decline in the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield . Grateloupia turuturu showed a general decrease in the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield with the rising temperature from 23 to 30℃ , similar to the temperate kelp Undaria pinnatifida. Changes of chlorophyll fluorescence yields of these algae were characterized differently indicating the existence of species-unique strategy to cope with high light. Measurements of the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence yield after short exposure to direct solar irradiance revealed how long these exposures could be without significant photoinhibition or with promising recovery in photosynthetic activities. Seasonal pattern of alternation of algal species in tank culture in the Northern Hemisphere at the latitude of 36°N was proposed according to these basic measurements.
