Examining unobserved factors associated with red light running in Vietnam:A latent class model analysis

TransHist:Occlusion-robust shape detection in cluttered images

Shape matching plays an important role in various computer vision and graphics applications such as shape retrieval, object detection, image editing,image retrieval, etc. However, detecting shapes in cluttered images is still quite challenging due to the incomplete edges and changing perspective. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that can efficiently identify a queried shape in a cluttered image. The core idea is to acquire the transformation from the queried shape to the cluttered image by summarising all pointto-point transformations between the queried shape and the image. To do so, we adopt a point-based shape descriptor, the pyramid of arc-length descriptor(PAD),to identify point pairs between the queried shape and the image having similar local shapes. We further calculate the transformations between the identified point pairs based on PAD. Finally, we summarise all transformations in a 4 D transformation histogram and search for the main cluster. Our method can handle both closed shapes and open curves, and is resistant to partial occlusions. Experiments show that our method can robustly detect shapes in images in the presence of partial occlusions, fragile edges, and cluttered backgrounds.

Endometriosis coexisting with dermoid cyst in a single ovary： a case report

Endometriosis coexisting with a dermoid cyst of the ovary is extraordinarily rare, although these both benign conditions are said to be common in women in the reproductive age group. There are only two previous case reports, which is evident from our literature review from January 1960 through January 2010. Acute abdomen is one of the greatest diagnostic challenges and easily ignored by the clinicians to exclude the possibility of gynecologic illness. A 35-year-old woman was referred by the doctor in Family clinic. She experienced a three-day period of severe right lower abdominal pain and intermittent vomiting. Ultrasonography identified a bilocular, cystic, hypoechoic, and hyperechoic tumor, 7 cm×6 cm×6 cm in the right adnexal region. Laparoscopic cystectomy was performed under the impression of ovarian cyst with torsion or hemorrhage. The frozen section was benign and appendiceal status was adequate. Histopathologic examination described an ovarian cyst composed of endometrial-type lining with stroma cells （endometriosis） and benign terotoma tissue with plenty of skin appendages and sebaceous glands. We report this unusual and interesting ovarian mass to remind physicians that the usage of the Endobag after cystectomy, the benefits on minimizing operative time, spilled opportunity, and postoperative complications. Laparoscopic techniques for large ovarian masses might be considered. The experience of the surgeon is also very important to prevent misdiagnosis or complication. Further follow up is mandatory for this simultaneous finding of ovarian endometriosis with coincidental dermoid cyst as a separate pathology in single ovary of such a nature. It also presents a challenge to the clinicians and to the pathologists.

Calculations of narrow-band transimissities and the Planck mean absorption coefficients of real gases using line-by-line and statistical narrow-band models

Narrow-band transmissivities in the spectral range of 150 to 9300 cml and at a uniform resolution of 25 cm-1 were calculated using the statistical narrow-band （SNB） model with the band parameters of Soufiani and Taine, the more recent parameters of Andr6 and Vaillon, and the line-by-line （LBL） method along with the HITEMP-2010 spectroscopic database. Calculations of narrow-band transmissivity were conducted for gas columns of different lengths and containing different isothermal and non-isothermal CO2-H20-N2 mixtures at 1 atm. Narrow-band transmissivities calculated by the SNB model are in large relative error at many bands. The more recent SNB model parameters of Andr6 and Vaillon are more accurate than the earlier parameters of Soufiani and Taine. The Planck mean absorption coefficients of CO2, H20, CO, and CH4 in the temperature range of 300 to 2500K were calculated using the LBL method and different versions of the high resolution transmission （HITRAN） and high-temperature spectroscopic absorption parameters （HITEMP） spectroscopic databases. The SNB model was also used to calculate the Planck mean absorption coefficients of these four radiating gases. The LBL results of the Planck mean absorption coefficient were compared with the classical results of tien and those from the SNB model.

Development of Niobium Oxide Coatings on Sand-Blasted Titanium Alloy Dental Implants

The purpose of this study was to use scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation to determine the optimal anodizetion conditions needed to generate niobium oxide coatings on titanium alloy dental implant screws. Sand-blasted titanium alloy dental implants were anodized in dilute hydrofluoric acid (HF(aq)) solution using a Sorensen DLM 300-2 power supply. The HF concentration and anodization time were varied and the resulting implant surfaces were evaluated using a Jeol JSM-5310LV Scanning Electron Microscope to determine the ideal anodization conditions. While HF is necessary to facilitate oxide growth, increasing concentrations resulted in proportionate increases in coating delamination. In a similar manner, a minimum anodization time of 1 hour was necessary for oxide growth but longer times produced more delamination especially at higher HF(aq) concentrations. SEM imaging showed that implants anodized for 1 hour in a 0.1% HF(aq) aqueous solution had the best results. Anodization can be used to generate niobium oxide coatings on sand-blasted Ti alloy dental implants by balancing the competing factors of oxide growth and coating delamination. It is believed that these oxide coatings have the potential to improve osseointegration relative to untreated dental implants when evaluated in an in vivo study.

Hepatitis B and C viruses are not risks for pancreatic adenocarcinoma

AIM:To investigate whether hepatitis B virus(HBV)and hepatitis C virus(HCV)increase risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC).METHODS:We recruited 585 patients with cytological and/or pathologically confirmed PDAC in National Taiwan University Hospital from September 2000 to September 2013,and 1716 age-,sex-,and race-matched controls who received a screening program in a community located in Northern *** samples were tested for the presence of HCV antibodies(anti-HCV),HBV surface antigen(HBsAg),antibodies against HBsAg(anti-HBs),and hepatitis B core antigen(anti-HBc)in all cases and *** odds ratio(OR)of PDAC was estimated by logistic regression analysis with adjustment diabetes mellitus(DM)and ***:HBsAg was positive in 73 cases(12.5%)and 213 controls(12.4%).Anti-HCV was positive in22 cases(3.8%)and 45 controls(2.6%).Anti-HBs was positive in 338 cases(57.8%)and 1047 controls(61.0%).The estimated ORs of PDAC in multivariate analysis were as follows:DM,2.08(95%CI:1.56-2.76,P<0.001),smoking,1.36(95%CI:1.02-1.80,P=0.035),HBsAg+/anti-HBc+/anti-HBs-,0.89(95%CI:0.89-1.68,P=0.219),HBsAg-/anti-HBc+/anti-HBs+,1.03(95%CI:0.84-1.25,P=0.802).CONCLUSION:HBV and HCV infection are not associated with risk of PDCA after adjustment for age,sex,DM and smoking,which were independent risk factors of PDAC.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of black soybean (BS) on the susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in hypercholesterolemic New Zealand white rabbits. Effects of the BS extract (BSE) and its components on monocyte adhesion of human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs), and adhesion molecule were investigated. Rabbits were divided into four groups, including control, 0.5% cholesterol with 20% casein (either with or without 0.5% vitamin E), and BS groups, all fed for 8 weeks. LDL was treated with 10 μM Cu2+ in vitro to determine the LDL lag time, and the vitamin E content of LDL was determined. The thickness of the tunica intima was measured on paraffin sections of thoracic aortas and aortic arches stained with Movat’s pentachrome. HAECs were pretreated with 100 μg/ml of BSE, and 10 μM of genistein, daidzein, cyanidin, and aspirin for 18 h, followed by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (2 ng/ml) for 6 h, after which U937 cell adhesion was determined. Adhesion molecule expression was examined using ELISAs. The LDL lag time in the BS group was similar to that in the vitamin E group, while its lag time was significantly longer than those in the control and casein groups. The ratio of the intimal area/medial area of the aortic arch of the casein group was significantly higher than those in the control, BS, and vitamin E groups. The vitamin E group had the lowest value, and was closest to the control group. The BS group exhibited a significantly decreased atheroma region in the aortic arch compared to the casein group. Pre-incubation with BSE, genistein, daidzein, cyanidin, and aspirin significantly decreased adhesion by U937 monocytic cells to TNF-α stimulated HAECs. Genistein, daidzein, cyanidin, and aspirin significantly suppressed the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1.
