Application and evaluation of a pattern-based building energy model calibration method using public building datasets

Building performance simulation has been adopted to support decision making in the building life cycle.An essential issue is to ensure a building energy simulation model can capture the reality and complexity of buildings and their systems in both the static characteristics and dynamic operations.Building energy model calibration is a technique that takes various types of measured performance data(e.g.,energy use)and tunes key model parameters to match the simulated results with the actual measurements.This study performed an application and evaluation of an automated pattern-based calibration method on commercial building models that were generated based on characteristics of real buildings.A public building dataset that includes high-level building attributes(e.g.,building type,vintage,total floor area,number of stories,zip code)of 111 buildings in San Francisco,California,USA,was used to generate building models in EnergyPlus.Monthly level energy use calibrations were then conducted by comparing building model results against the actual buildings’monthly electricity and natural gas consumption.The results showed 57 out of 111 buildings were successfully calibrated against actual buildings,while the remaining buildings showed opportunities for future calibration improvements.Enhancements to the pattern-based model calibration method are identified to expand its use for:(1)central heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)systems with chillers,(2)space heating and hot water heating with electricity sources,(3)mixed-use building types,and(4)partially occupied buildings.

Developing occupant archetypes within urban low-income housing: A case study in Mumbai, India

Rapid urbanization pressure and poverty have created a push for affordable housing within the global south.The design of affordable housing can have consequences on the thermal(dis)comfort and behaviour of the occupants,hence requiring an occupant-centric approach to ensure sustainability.This paper investigates occupant behaviour within the urban poor households of Mumbai,India and its impact on their thermal comfort and energy use.This study is a first-of-its-kind attempt to explore the socio-demographic characteristics and energy-related behaviour of low-income occupants within Indian context.Three occupant archetypes,Indifferent Consumers;Considerate Savers;and Conscious Conventionals,were identified from the behavioural and psychographic characteristics gathered through a transverse field survey.A two-step clustering approach was adopted for occupant segmentation that highlighted considerable diversity in occupants’adaptation measures,energy knowledge,energy habits,and their pro-environmental behaviour within similar socio-economic group.Building energy simulation of the representative archetype behaviour estimated up to 37%variations for air-conditioned and up to 8%variation for fan-assisted naturally ventilated housing units during peak summer months.The results from this study establish the significance of occupant factors in shaping energy demand and thermal comfort within low-income housing and pave way for developing occupant-centric building design strategies to serve this marginalized population.The developed low-income occupant archetypes would be useful for architects and energy modelers to generate realistic energy use profiles and improve building performance simulation results.

Occupant behavior(OB)is one of the significant sources of uncertainty in building performance simulation.While OB modeling has received increased attention in the past decade,research on the degree of granularity or level of detail(LoD)required for representing occupants is still in the nascent stages.This paper analyzes the modeling and applicability of three LoDs to represent occupants in building performance assessment.A medium-sized prototype office building located in Chicago,Illinois is used as the simulation case study.Ten occupant-centric attributes are adopted to develop the LoDs for OB representation.We first demonstrate the different modeling approaches required for simulating the three fidelity levels.Later,we illustrate the suitability of the developed LoDs in supporting six building performance use cases across different lifecycle stages.This study intends to provide guidance for the building simulation community on appropriate OB representation to support various use cases.

The sluggish kinetics of both hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)generate the large overpotential in water electrolysis and thus high-cost hydrogen production.Here,multidimensional nanoporous interpenetrating-phase FeNiZn alloy and FeNi_(3)intermetallic heterostructure is in situ constructed on NiFe foam(FeNiZn/FeNi_(3)@NiFe)by dealloying protocol.Coupling with the eminent synergism among specific constituents and the highly efficient mass transport from integrated porous backbone,FeNiZn/FeNi_(3)@NiFe depicts exceptional bifunctional activities for water splitting with extremely low overpotentials toward OER and HER(η_(1000)=367/245 mV)as well as the robust durability during the 400 h testing in alkaline solution.The as-built water electrolyzer with FeNiZn/FeNi_(3)@NiFe as both anode and cathode exhibits record-high performances for sustainable hydrogen output in terms of much lower cell voltage of 1.759 and 1.919 V to deliver the current density of 500 and 1000 mA cm^(-2)as well long working lives.Density functional theory calculations disclose that the interface interaction between FeNiZn alloy and FeNi_(3)intermetallic generates the modulated electron structure state and optimized intermediate chemisorption,thus diminishing the energy barriers for hydrogen production in water splitting.With the merits of fine performances,scalable fabrication,and low cost,FeNiZn/FeNi_(3)@NiFe holds prospective application potential as the bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting.

Li-CO_(2)batteries are among the most intriguing techniques for balancing the carbon cycle,but are challenged by the annoyed thermodynamic barrier of the Li_(2)CO_(3)decomposition reaction.Herein,we demonstrate the electrocatalytic performances of two-dimensional(2D)CoAl-layer double hydroxide(LDH)nanosheets can be significantly improved by trans-dimensional crosslinking with three-dimensional(3D)multilevel nanoporous(MP)-RuCoAl alloy(MP-RuCoAl alloy⊥CoAl-LDH).The MP-RuCoAl alloy⊥CoAl-LDH with multiscale pore channels and abundant nano-heterointerface is directly prepared by controllable etching Al from a Ru-Co-Al master alloy along with simultaneous partial oxidization of Al and Co atoms.The MP-RuCoAl is composed of various intermetallic compounds and Ru with abundant grain boundaries,and forms numerous heterointerface with 2D CoAl-LDH nanosheets.The multiscale porous metallic network benefits mass and electron transportation as well as discharge product storage and enables a rich multiphase reaction interface.In situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry shows that the mass-to-charge ratio in the charging process is~0.733 which is consistent with the theoretical value of 3/4,stating that the reversible co-decomposition of Li_(2)CO_(3)and C can be achieved with the MP-RuCoAl alloy⊥CoAl-LDH.The Ketjen black(KB)/MP-RuCoAl⊥CoAl-LDH battery demonstrates a high cyclability for over 2270 h(227 cycles)with a lower voltage gap stabilized at~1.3 V at 200 mA·g^(−1).Our findings here provide useful guidelines for developing high efficiency transition metal based electrocatalysts by coupling with conductive porous substrate for impelling the development of practical Li-CO_(2)battery systems.

As the primary suppliers of cyclable sodium ions,O3-type layer-structured manganese-based oxides are recognized as highly competitive cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries.To advance the development of high-energy sodium-ion batteries,it is crucial to explore cathode materials operating at high voltages while maintaining a stable cycling behavior.The orbital and electronic structure of the octahedral center metal element plays a crucial role in maintaining the octahedra structural integrity and improving Na^(+)ion diffusion by introducing heterogeneous chemical bonding.Inspired by the abundant configuration of extra nuclear electrons and large ion radius,we employed trace amounts of tungsten in this study.The obtained cathode material can promote the reversibility of oxygen redox reactions in the high-voltage region and inhibit the loss of lattice oxygen.Additionally,the formation of a Na_(2)WO_(4) coating on the material surface can improve the interfacial stability and interface ions diffusion.It demonstrates an initial Coulombic efficiency(ICE)of 94.6%along with 168.5 mA h g^(-1 )discharge capacity within the voltage range of 1.9-4.35 V.These findings contribute to the advancement of high-energy sodium-ion batteries by providing insights into the benefits of tungsten doping and Na_(2)WO_(4) coating on cathode materials.

An electroencephalographic(EEG)signature of auditory hallucinations(AHs)is important for facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of AHs in schizophrenia.We recorded EEG from 25 schizophrenia patients with recurrent AHs.During the period of AHs,EEG recordings exhibited significantly elevated beta2-band power in the temporal region,as compared to those recorded in the absence of AHs or during stimulation with verbal sounds.We further generated methamphetamine-treated rhesus monkeys exhibiting psychosis-like behaviors,including repetitive sudden searching actions in the absence of external intrusion,suggesting the occurrence of AHs.Epidural EEG beta2-band power in the temporal region of these monkeys was enhanced immediately after methamphetamine treatment and positively correlated with the frequency of sudden searching actions.Thus,the enhancement of temporal beta2-band oscillations represents a signature for AHs in both patients and a monkey model of psychosis,and this monkey model can be used for developing closed-loop neuromodulation approaches for the treatment of refractory AHs in schizophrenia.

Intermetallic-driven highly reversible electrocatalysis in Li–CO_(2) battery over nanoporous Ni_(3)Al/Ni heterostructure

Li–CO_(2) batteries,which integrate CO_(2) utilization and electrochemical energy storage,offer the prospect of utilizing a greenhouse gas and providing an alternative to the well-established lithium-ion batteries.However,they still suffer from rather limited reversibility,low energy efficiency,and sluggish CO_(2) redox reaction kinetics.To address these key issues,a nanoporous Ni_(3)Al intermetallic/Ni heterojunction(NP–Ni_(3) Al/Ni)is purposely engi-neered here via an alloying–etching protocol,whereby the unique interactions between Al and Ni in Ni_(3)Al endow NP-Ni_(3)Al/Ni with optimum reactant/product adsorption and thus unique catalytic performance for the CO_(2) redox reaction.Furthermore,the nanoporous spongy structure benefits mass transport as well as discharge product storage and enables a rich multiphase reaction interface.In situ Raman studies and theoretical simulations reveal that both CO_(2) reduction and the co-decomposition of Li_(2)CO_(3) and C are distinctly promoted by NP-Ni_(3)Al/Ni,thereby greatly improving catalytic activity and stability.NP-Ni_(3)Al/Ni offers promising application potential in Li–CO_(2) batteries,with its scalable fabrication,low production cost,and superior catalytic performance.

Genomic insights into the genetic basis of cotton breeding in China

The excellent Upland cotton(Gossypium hirsutum)cultivars developed since 1949 have made a huge contribution to cotton production in China,the world's largest producer and consumer of cotton.However,the genetic and genomic basis for the improvements of these cotton cultivars remains largely unclear.In this study,we selected 16 Upland cotton cultivars with important historical status in Chinese cotton breeding and constructed a multiparent,advanced generation,intercross(MAGiC)population comprising 920 recombinant inbred lines.A genome-wide association study using the MAGIC population identified 54 genomic loci associated with lint yield and fiber quality.Of them,25(46.30%)pleiotropic genomic loci cause simultaneous changes of lint yield and/or fiber quality traits,revealing complex trade-offs and linkage drags in Upland cotton agronomic traits.Deep sequencing data of 11 introduced ancestor cultivars and publicly available resequencing datasets of 839 cultivars developed in China during the past 70 years were integrated to explore the historical distribution and origin of the elite or selected alleles.Interestingly,85%oftheseelitealleles were selectedandfixed fromdifferent Americanancestors,consistentwithcotton breeding practices in China.However,seven elite alleles of native origin that are responsible for Fusarium wilt resistance,early maturing,good-quality fiber,and other characteristics were not found in American an-cestors but have greatly contributed to Chinese cotton breeding and wide cultivation.Taken together,these results provide a genetic basis for further improving cotton cultivars and reveal that the genetic composition of Chinese cotton cultivars is narrow and mainly derived from early introduced American varieties.

建筑中的人行为是指人员在室内外行走移动以及对建筑设备进行操控的行为;人员移动与操控动作可以用随机模型来定量化描述,它们是影响建筑实际使用方式及能耗的主要因素之一。本文根据目前国内外建筑人行为定量描述及刻画模型的研究现状,提出了建筑人行为定量描述的扩展标识语言架构（OBXml Schema）,给出了影响建筑能耗的人行为定量因素分析,以及OBXml核心节点描述,较全面地定量描述了建筑人员用能行为关键元素及模型参数,为建筑人行为能耗模拟、软件开发研究提供了一套国际标准数据交换语言格式。
