Competitive interactions and coexistence of sympatric flagship carnivores in Asia

Understanding the competition and coexistence of flagship carnivores is key to creating strategies for their conservation in the face of global carnivore declines.Although studies exploring the dynamics and competition between tigers(Panthera tigris)and leopards(P.pardus)span decades,there is a lack of understanding regarding the factors that influence their coexistence mechanisms on a broad scale,as well as the drivers determining their exploitative and interference competition.We gathered a comprehensive list of research papers among which 36 papers explored the interspecific interactions between tigers and leopards and tested the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on the coexistence mechanisms along three dimensions using multiple response variables regression models;we also tested the influence of ecological drivers determining the exploitative or interference competition between tigers and leopards.Elevation and ungulate density were the most important predictors in regulating the coexistence mechanisms.Tigers and leopards exhibited more positive relations/higher overlaps as elevation increased in the spatial niche.In addition,they showed a higher dietary overlap in the prey-rich regions.We determined that interference competition between tigers and leopards was less frequently observed in habitats with dense tree cover and homogeneous vegetation structures.Meanwhile,studies with multiple metrics would promote the detection of interference competition.Our study provides new insight into the competitive interactions and coexistence mechanisms of tigers and leopards on a broad scale.Policy-makers and managers should pay more attention to the factors of elevation,prey abundance,and habitat structures for the conservation of tigers and leopards.

Personalized treatment of well-differentiated gastric neuroendocrine tumors based on clinicopathological classification and grading:A multicenter retrospective study

Background:The incidence of well-differentiated gastric neuroendocrine tumors(G-NET)is increasing annually,and while they have a good prognosis and low mortality rate,their high recurrence rate makes treatment options controversial.This study aims to determine the relationship between individualized treatment plans and the recurrence of G-NET.Methods:We performed a multicenter,retrospective study of 94 patients with highly differentiated G-NET and treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital,Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital,and Beijing Zhong-Neng-Jian Hospital from November 2015 to September 2023.Risk factors for recurrence of G-NETs were investigated using chi-squared test and multifactorial logistic regression analysis.Results:After a median follow-up of 49 months,the overall recurrence rate among the 94 G-NET patients was 14%(13/94).The recurrence rates of endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR),endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD),somatostatin analog(SSA)therapy,and surgery were 43%(6/14),10%(5/49),5%(1/22),and 11%(1/9),respectively.Post-treatment recurrence rates were significantly different(P=0.014)among four treatments(EMR,ESD,SSA,and surgery),and further subgroup comparisons revealed lower recurrence rates in the ESD and SSA groups than in the EMR group.From the second month onward,SSA therapy considerably reduced the gastrin levels from 1081.0(571.5,2472.8)pg/mL to 461.5(255.3,795.0)pg/mL(Z=-3.521,P<0.001).Both chi-squared test and multifactorial logistic regression analysis suggested that among the clinicopathological parameters studied,only the pre-treatment gastrin level(P=0.018 and 0.005)and the type of treatment(P=0.014 and 0.017)were significantly associated with G-NET recurrence.Conclusions:Individualized treatment strategies may reduce the risk of relapse after G-NET treatment.Long-term SSA therapy may be a secure and efficacious treatment option for type 1 G-NET with more than six lesions,and it substantially decreases the incidence of post-treatment recurrence.

The recent wave of the artificial intelligence(AI)revolution has aroused unprecedented interest in the intelligentialize of human society.As an essential component that bridges the physical world and digital signals,flexible sensors are evolving from a single sensing element to a smarter system,which is capable of highly efficient acquisition,analysis,and even perception of vast,multifaceted data.While challenging from a manual perspective,the development of intelligent flexible sensing has been remarkably facilitated owing to the rapid advances of brain-inspired AI innovations from both the algorithm(machine learning)and the framework(artificial synapses)level.This review presents the recent progress of the emerging AI-driven,intelligent flexible sensing systems.The basic concept of machine learning and artificial synapses are introduced.The new enabling features induced by the fusion of AI and flexible sensing are comprehensively reviewed,which significantly advances the applications such as flexible sensory systems,soft/humanoid robotics,and human activity monitoring.As two of the most profound innovations in the twenty-first century,the deep incorporation of flexible sensing and AI technology holds tremendous potential for creating a smarter world for human beings.

The data analysis of blasting sites has always been the research goal of relevant researchers.The rise of mobile blasting robots has aroused many researchers’interest in machine learning methods for target detection in the field of blasting.Serverless Computing can provide a variety of computing services for people without hardware foundations and rich software development experience,which has aroused people’s interest in how to use it in the field ofmachine learning.In this paper,we design a distributedmachine learning training application based on the AWS Lambda platform.Based on data parallelism,the data aggregation and training synchronization in Function as a Service(FaaS)are effectively realized.It also encrypts the data set,effectively reducing the risk of data leakage.We rent a cloud server and a Lambda,and then we conduct experiments to evaluate our applications.Our results indicate the effectiveness,rapidity,and economy of distributed training on FaaS.

Optimal Initialization and Starting Approach of Synchronous Condenser Integrated Power Grid

Synchronous condensers(SCs)are generally used at the receiving-end stations of ultra-high-voltage direct current(UHVDC)transmission systems due to their strong reactive power support and flexible regulation of reactive power according to the interconnected grids operating conditions.In this paper,different starting control schemes of a SC integrated power grid are investigated providing four main contributions:1)The principle of reactive power support of the SC on the interconnected power grid is analytically studied,providing the establishment of mathematical models.2)Four different starting control schemes are developed for the initialization and SC integration,i.***.in Scheme 1,a preset initial falling speed is directly utilized without initialization;in Scheme 2,a black start sequential control approach with a static frequency converter(SFC)is proposed;in Scheme 3,PI/PD/PID controllers are respectively applied for the excitation device at the speed-falling stage;in Scheme 4,a pre-insertion approach of an energy absorption component with R/L/RL is utilized to suppress the surges at the SC integration instant.3)The dynamic behaviors of four different starting schemes at specific operating stages are evaluated.4)The success rate of SC integration is analyzed to evaluate starting control performance.Performance of the SC interconnected system with four different starting control schemes is evaluated in the timedomain simulation environment PSCAD/EMTDC^(TM).The results prove the superiority of the proposed starting control approach in Scheme 4.

Addressing the impact of canine distemper spreading on an isolated tiger population in northeast Asia

The continuation of the isolated Amur tiger(Panthera tigris altaica)population living along the China-Russia border is facing serious challenges due to factors such as its small size(including 38 individuals)and canine distemper virus(CDV).We use a population viability analysis metamodel,which consists of a traditional individual-based demographic model linked to an epidemiological model,to assess options for controlling the impact of negative factors through domestic dog management in protected areas,increasing connectivity to the neighboring large population(including more than 400 individuals),and habitat expansion.Without intervention,under inbreeding depression of 3.14,6.29,and 12.26 lethal equivalents,our metamodel predicted the extinction within 100 years is 64.4%,90.6%,and 99.8%,respectively.In addition,the simulation results showed that dog management or habitat expansion independently will not ensure tiger population viability for the next 100 years,and connectivity to the neighboring population would only keep the population size from rapidly declining.However,when the above three conservation scenarios are combined,even at the highest level of 12.26 lethal equivalents inbreeding depression,population size will not decline and the probability of extinction will be<5.8%.Our findings highlight that protecting the Amur tiger necessitates a multifaceted synergistic effort.Our key management recommendations for this population underline the importance of reducing CDV threats and expanding tiger occupancy to its former range in China,but re-establishing habitat connectivity to the neighboring population is an important long-term objective.

The treatment of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)remains a challenge due to tumor evolution during anti-angiogenesis therapies,in which the mechanism of vascular mimicry(VM)is believed to result in ineffective treatment[1].To conquer this challenge,substantial effort has recently been devoted to seeking out natural compounds on account of their multitarget actions.As a traditional herbal medicine,platycodin D(PD)is the major bioactive monomer derived from Platycodon grandiflorum(P.grandiflorum)and is used as an expectorant for pulmonary disease in Asia[2].

A Modification of LiMn₂O₄ by Ionic Conductive Agent and Electronic Conductive Agent Coating

Carbon was used as electronic conductive agent, and metasilicic acid lithium (Li2SiO3) as ionic conductive agent, the two factors were investigated cooperatively. We evaluated their effect by using spherical spinel LiMn2O4 which prepared ourselves as cathode material. Then Li2SiO3/carbon surface coating on LiMn2O4 (LMO/C/LSO) which Li2SiO3 inside and carbon/Li2SiO3 coated LiMn2O4 (LMO/LSO/C) were prepared, All of materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical test;spherical LiMn2O4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM);and coated materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). While uncoated spinel LiMn2O4 maintained 72% of capacity in 60 cycles by the rate of 0.2C, and LMO/LSO/C showed the best electrochemical performance, 89% of the initial capacity remained after 75 cycles at 0.2C. Furthermore, the rate performance of LMO/LSO/C also improved obviously, about 30 mAh·g-1 of capacity attained at the rate of 5C, higher than LMO/C/LSO and bare LiMn2O4.

Bailing capsule(百令胶囊) alleviates autoimmune thyroiditis via regulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway: a multi-omics analysis

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and potential mechanism of Bailing capsule (百令胶囊， BL) anti-autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). METHODS: Based on the AIT rat model， the effect of BL in alleviating AIT was evaluated by detecting serum thyroid index free triiodothyronine (FT3)， free thyroxine (FT4)， thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)， thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb)， thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb)， and inflammatory factors Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)， Interleukin-4， -10， and -12 (IL-4， IL-10， and IL-12) as well as thyroid tissue Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and ultrastructure observation. The mechanism of BL was explored by combining transcriptome and proteome analysis， and further verified by Western blot (WB). RESULTS: BL effectively reduced serum FT3， FT4， TGAb， and TPOAb levels in AIT rats， restored TSH balance， inhibited the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ and IL-12， promoted the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10， and significantly reduced IFN-γ/IL-4 and IL-12/IL-10， improved thyroid follicular structure， and protected thyroid tissue from injury. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and protein interaction network analysis showed that BL affected the expression of fatty acid-binding protein 4， acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 1， and acyl-CoA dehydrogenase long chain to regulate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway， thereby inhibiting the fatty acid metabolism and the inflammatory state of AIT rats. CONCLUSIONS: BL could effectively reduce thyroid inflammation in AIT model rats. The possible BL mechanism was to regulate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signaling pathway and inhibit fatty acid metabolism. This study suggested that BL has the potential to be used in clinical treatment of AIT.
