Groundwater circulation relative to water quality and vegetation in an arid transitional zone linking oasis, desert and river

In groundwater-dependent ecosystems, groundwater circulation controls the overall water quality and ecosystem dynamics. Groundwater and vegetation across a 30-km groundwater transect linking oasis, desert and river in an extremely arid area were investigated with a series of soil profiles drilled into the unsaturated zone to understand groundwater circulation and its control on groundwater quality and surface vegetation in the extremely arid Lower Tarim River, NW China. Measurements have included water-table depth, water chemistry and water isotopes (2H, 18O, 3H) for 15 water samples, soil moisture and chloride content for 11 soil profiles, and vegetation investigation. Results show that the groundwater in desert zone is characterized by slow recharge rate (pre-modern water), great water-table depth (6.17-9.43 m) and high salinity (15.32-26.50 g/L), while that in oasis (uncultivated land) and riparian zone is characterized by relatively fast recharge rate (modern water), small groundwater-table depth (3.56-8.36 m) and low salinity (1.25-1.95 g/L). Stable isotopes show that secondary evaporation takes place during irrigation in oasis. The vegetation characteristics (coverage, richness, evenness and number of plants) are closely related to soil moisture and water-table depth. Groundwater recharge from irrigation in oasis and from river in riparian zone sustains a better ecosystem than that in the desert area, where lateral and vertical groundwater recharge is limited. The more evapotranspirative enrichment may occur in the vegetated and water-rich riparian zone as compared to desert. This study also demonstrates the effectiveness of environmental tracers in studying ecohydrological processes in arid regions.

The activity and hydrothermal stability of the Rh/Ce_(x)Zr_(1-x)O_(2)(x=0,0.05,0.3,0.5) model three-way catalysts for gasoline vehicle emissions control were investigated in this *** the Rh/Ce_(x)Zr_(1-x)O_(2) samples with different Ce/Zr ratios,the Rh/ZrO_(2) sample exhibits a significantly better activity and hydrothermal stability than the rest of the *** impacts of having more Ce components in the Rh/Ce_(x)Zr_(1-x)O_(2) catalysts are associated with the strong Rh-O-Ce interaction that tends to over stabilize the rhodium species.A significant amount of such rhodium atoms can be found in the bulk of the support oxides after a hydrothermal aging at 1050℃ with 10% H_(2)O in air for 12 ***,the sintering of rhodium on the surface of Rh/ZrO_(2) catalysts is the main reason for the catalyst deactivation during the hydrothermal *** findings provide an example where high dispersion of supported metal induced by strong metal-support interactions does not necessarily lead to high catalytic activity.

Understanding the water salinisation mechanism is the basis for regional salt *** dissolution, evaporation and transpiration are the main factors controlling natural water salinity in arid inland basins;however,the two are difficult to *** deuterium excess decreases during evaporation and is unrelated to the isotopic composition of the initial water,it is a potential tool for determining the contribution of the evapoconcentration of a given water body using the relationship between deuterium excess and salinity rather than betweenδO(orδH) and *** this paper, the relationship between the residual water fraction and deuterium excess was derived from the Rayleigh distillation *** contribution of evapoconcentration and mineral dissolution and/or transpiration for a given water body can be determined by comparing the residual water fraction and salinity between the initial water and the evapoconcentrated *** extremely arid Tarim River Basin in NW China is taken as an example to demonstrate deuterium excess and salinity evolution from the source stream to river water,lake/reservoir water and *** results show that mineral dissolution contributes most of the salinity(67-77%) for Boston Lake and the Kongque and Tarim rivers relative to the source *** dissolution and/or transpiration contribute greater salinity (73-99.6%) to the groundwater recharged by the river water in the middle and lower reaches of the Tarim *** study provides a method for determining the salinisation mechanism and is important for salt movement and management.

This paper reviews diffuse recharge studies in(semi)arid northern China,which are mainly based on environmental tracers of the unsaturated zone(chloride mass balance,natural tritium,artificial tritium,and bromine).Diffuse recharge in the northwestern part is commonly less than 3.6 mm/yr,where precipitation is less than 200 mm/yr and groundwater is mainly recharged by mountain *** recharge rates increase in the rain-fed Loess Plateau, ranging from 30-100 mm/yr beneath the main crop(wheat).Due to enhanced irrigation in the North China Plain,it can reach thousands of millimeters per *** to the limited recharge and sometimes thick unsaturated zone,some shallow groundwaters(e.g.,the western Ordos basin and desert area) in northwestern China are even palaeowaters (1.6-30 ka).Insufficient groundwater recharge cannot make a mass balance aquifer under present water exploitation *** unrenewable water resources has caused severe water-table subsidence(0.5-2 m/yr).Several suggestions based on the limited groundwater recharge rate and water table subsidence in northern China were proposed for groundwater sustainable utilization.

By employing chemical and isotopic tracers(N and O in NO),we investigated the main processes controlling nitrate distribution in the unsaturated zone and *** water was extracted from two soil cores drilled in a typical agricultural cropping area of the North China Plain(NCP),where groundwater was also *** results indicate that evaporation and denitrification are the two major causes of the distribution of nitrate in soil water extracts in the unsaturated *** from unsaturated zone is evidenced by a positive correlation between chloride and nitrate,and denitrification by a strong linear relationship betweenδO and ln(NO/CI).The latter is estimated to account for up to 50%of the nitrate loss from soil *** the saturated zone,nitrate is reduced at varying extents (100 mg/L and 10 mg/L at two sites,respectively),largely by dilution of the aquifer water.

Knowledge of the baseline of groundwater nitrate is essential for water quality *** largescale anthropogenic activities,especially utilization of chemical fertilizers began from the 1950s in most countries, such as China,the baseline of groundwater nitrate can be determined from pre-modern water using tritium and statistical *** the(semi)arid northern China,the median values of nitrate baseline for the three large regions(Tarim river basin,TRB;Loess Plateau of China,LPC;North China Plain,NCP) range from 2 to 9 mg/L(as NO3).Several main factors control nitrate content in the unsaturated zone moisture and in groundwater,e.g.,nitrate input,sediment moisture movement(direction and rate),and depth of water table at the macroscopic scale in(semi)arid areas,where nitrate loss by denitrification can be *** unsaturated zone profiles(638 sediment samples in total) with depths ranging from 5 to 18.25 m were sampled to demonstrate how those factors affect groundwater *** sediment moisture moves upward from the water table in the TRB case,a large inventory of nitrate in the unsaturated zone with evapo-transpired origin would never enter groundwater and groundwater nitrate contents remain at the baseline *** the contrary,in the LPC and NCP,nitrate from fertilizers may pass through the unsaturated zone and eventually reach the water table to pollute *** is also noticed that there is a time lag between land-use change and groundwater quality response,due to the buffering capacity of the thick unsaturated zone,to which attention should be paid regarding water quality management.

Alpine catchments are the utmost sources of much of the world’s *** knowledge about the significant mountainous hydrological cycle is still *** stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water are very useful to identify hydrological processes and to assess water *** this paper we attempt to characterize the seasonal isotopic variation patterns in the Kumalak River catchments,Western Tianshan Mountains in Central Asia using precipitation and river samples collected during a hydrological year from 2009 to *** show that isotopes in precipitation are enriched in warm seasons and varied greatly with a range of-19.7‰ 2.0‰ for δO and-154.1‰ 5.7‰ for δ*** excess displays an opposite trend with precipitation *** the contrary,isotopes in river water changed little through the hydrological year with a range of-13.2‰ to-11.0‰ for δO and from-89.6‰ to-69.5‰ for δ*** excess of river water shows a trend similar to that of the river *** different behavior is caused by the multi-source recharge pattern of the Kumalak *** spring and summer,the main component of river is icemelt water,which brings lighter isotopes to the river,though precipitation isotopes are heavier in the same *** other seasons,the river is mainly recharged by groundwater attenuating the seasonal isotopic variations in *** addition,isotopes in river and spring water are found to plot above the LMWL,which is related to the effect of moisture recycling.

Soil and vadose zone profiles are used as an archive of changes in groundwater recharge and water quality following changes in land use in an area of the Loess Plateau of China.A typical rain-fed loess-terrace agriculture region in Hequan,Guyuan,is taken as an example,and multiple tracers(chloride mass balance,stable isotopes,tritium and water chemistry) are used to examine groundwater recharge mechanisms and to evaluate soil water chloride as an archive for recharge rate and water *** show that groundwater recharge beneath natural uncultivated grassland,used as a baseline,is about 94-100 mm year and that the time it takes for annual precipitation to reach water table through the thick unsaturated zone is from decades to hundreds of years(tritium free).This recharge rate is 2-3 orders of magnitude more than in the other semiarid areas with similar annual rainfall but with deep-rooted vegetation and relatively high *** of the water that eventually becomes recharge originally infiltrated in the summer *** conversion from native grassland to winter wheat has reduced gioundwater recharge by 42-50%(50-55 mm year for recharge),and the conversion from winter wheat to alfalfa resulted in a significant chloride accumulation in the upper soil zone,which terminated deep *** paper also evaluates the time lag between potential recharge and actual recharge to aquifer and between increase in solute concentration in soil moisture and mat in the aquifer following land-use change due to the deep unsaturated ***(?) 2012 John Wiley & Sons,Ltd.
