Sludge composition and characteristics shaped microbial community and further determined process performance: A study on full-scale thermal hydrolysis-anaerobic digestion processes

Anaerobic digestion (AD) with thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment is a promising process for excess sludge treatment,while there lacks of the knowledge from full-scale process about the impact of sludge composition and characteristics on microbial community and performance.The sludge physiochemical indices,microbial community and performance data of four full-scale TH-AD plants were characterized,and their relationships was elucidated.The four plants were operated under almost similar total organic loading rate (OLR)but their methanogenesis performance differentiate into two groups,namely superior group(SupG) and the inferior group (Inf G).In both groups,TH effectively solubilized particulate organic compounds,meanwhile raised the ammonia nitrogen (NH_(4)^(+)-N) and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration.Compared with the Sup G,thermal hydrolyzed sludge of Inf G had higher level of VFAs,NH_(4)^(+)-N and total chemical oxygen demand (t COD),which showed higher inhibition effect on microbes,leading to a community with lower diversity,lower abundance of carbohydrate degrading functional guild,higher protein degrading one,and methanogens that adapted to limited substrates,and further declined the methane production rate.Thus,it was recommended that OLR alone was not sufficient for controlling the system in design and operation,the concentration of VFAs,NH_(4)^(+)-N and t COD should be equally considered.Their higher concentration,together with the higher abundance of Defluviitoga and Proteiniphilum were recommended as indicators for inferior running condition.Our results proposed that microbial communities played a role of bridge between environmental factors and performance,provided implications for engineering ecology and operational regulation for full-scale sludge TH-AD process.

Hydrodynamic analysis of carbon nanotube clusters in distributor-less conical fluidized beds with step-by-step scaling

As a high-performance material with great application potential,the application of carbon nanotubes has been limited by their production volume.A distributor-less conical fluidized bed is the main equipment used in the industrial production of carbon nanotubes.To improve the production volume and product quality of carbon nanotubes,the study of fluidized-bed-diameter scaling is important.Three different diameters of distributor-less conical fluidized beds were established,and then the particle behavior and bubble characteristics of carbon nanotube clusters at these bed diameters were investigated.Time-series and wavelet analysis methods were used to analyze the pressure-fluctuation signals inside the fluidized beds.Results showed that the distributor-less design caused the airflow to break through the middle of the bed,which did not change with the change in bed diameter.The powder-bridging phenomenon of carbon nanotube clusters in a 100-mm-diameter fluidized bed was related to the special microstructure of carbon nanotube clusters.The frequency of pressure fluctuations in the bed decreased nonlinearly with increasing bed diameter.This study can guide the design and scale-up of distributor-less conical fluidized beds,especially for the scale-up of carbon nanotube production equipment,which can contribute to the improvement of carbon nanotubes’capacity and quality in industrial production.

Although several strategies(including grain refinement,texture adjustment,precipitation hardening,etc.)have been verified to effectively improve the mechanical properties of lightweight magnesium(Mg)alloys,considerable efforts are still needed to be made to comprehensively understand the potential mechanisms controlling complex microstructures and deformation behaviors exhibited by the hexagonal close-packed host lattice of Mg,thus assisting the rational design of materials at a more physical level.As the cornerstone of this review,a universal rule,the so-called synergy of thermodynamics and kinetics(i.e.,thermo-kinetic diversity,correlation and connectivity),including a recently proposed theory of generalized stability(GS),is introduced to deepen our understanding on common behaviors in Mg alloys(i.e.,deformations(slip and twining modes),phase transformations(especially for precipitations)and interactions in between)at a new perspective.Guided by the GS theory,typical cases for Mg alloys design are qualitatively evaluated to reemphasize the traditional strengthening and toughening strategies mentioned above and to illuminate their exquisite coordination for breaking through the trade-off relationship between strength and ductility,corresponding to a typical thermo-kinetic pair(i.e.,high driving force(ΔG)-high GS).To produce the Mg alloys with superior strength-ductility balances,the potential capacity of this GS theory for guiding processing path design is discussed,finally。

Superplastic forming is a practical method to manufacture complex-shaped parts of titanium alloys with large deformation.Laminated parts of dissimilar titanium alloys fabricated by superplastic forming can achieve excellent performance by combining the advantages of components.This work displays the superplastic tension behavior and microstructural evolution of dissimilar TC4/SP700 laminate prepared by the diffusion bonding process.Two titanium alloys can achieve metallurgical bonding at parameters of 800℃/1 h/5 MPa.Except for dynamic recrystallization and grain growth behaviors upon superplastic tension,stress-induced phase transformation plays an important role inαtoβphase transformation apart from the elevated temperature.The superplastic deformation can be attributed to the grain boundary sliding accommodated multiplex motion of dislocations.In addition,the retained strengths of all dissimilar TC4/SP700 laminates after superplastic deformation with different strain rates and temperatures range from 807 to 890 MPa.

PIWI-interacting RNAs(pi RNAs)are a class of small noncoding RNA molecules that specifically bind to piwi protein family members to exert regulatory functions in germ cells.Recent studies have found that pi RNAs,as tissue-specific molecules,both play oncogenic and tumor suppressive roles in cancer progression,including cancer cell proliferation,metastasis,chemoresistance and stemness.Additionally,the atypical manifestation of pi RNAs and PIWI proteins in various malignancies presents a promising strategy for the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in the diagnosis and management of tumors.Nonetheless,the precise functions of pi RNAs in cancer progression and their underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully comprehended.This review aims to examine current research on the biogenesis and functions of pi RNA and its burgeoning importance in cancer progression,thereby offering novel perspectives on the potential utilization of pi RNAs and piwi proteins in the management and treatment of advanced cancer.

CmNF-YB8 affects drought resistance in chrysanthemum by altering stomatal status and leaf cuticle thickness

Drought is a major abiotic stress that limits plant growth and development.Adaptive mechanisms have evolved to mitigate drought stress,including the capacity to adjust water loss rate and to modify the morphology and structure of the epidermis.Here,we show that the expression of CmNF-YB8,encoding a nuclear factor Y(NF-Y)B-type subunit,is lower under drought conditions in chrysanthemum(Chrysanthemum morifolium).Transgenicchrysanthemumlinesinwhich transcript levels of CmNF-YB8 were reduced by RNA interference(CmNF-YB8-RNAi)exhibited enhanced drought resistance relative to control lines,whereas lines overexpressing CmNF-YB8(CmNF-YB8-OX)were less tolerant to drought.Compared to wild type(WT),CmNF-YB8-RNAi plants showed reduced stomatal opening and a thicker epidermal cuticle that correlated with their water loss rate.We also identified genes involved in stomatal adjustment(CBLinteracting protein kinase 6,CmCIPK6)and cuticle biosynthesis(CmSHN3)that are more highly expressed in CmNF-YB8-RNAi lines than in WT,CmCIPK6 being a direct downstream target of CmNF-YB8.Virus-induced gene silencing of CmCIPK6 or CmSHN3 in the CmNFYB8-RNAi background abolished the effects of CmNF-YB8-RNAi on stomatal closure and cuticle deposition,respectively.CmNF-YB8 thus regulates CmCIPK6 and CmSHN3 expression to alter stomatal movement and cuticle thickness in the leaf epidermis,thereby affecting drought resistance.

Cooperative NHC/photoredox catalysis has emerged as an important research field in recent years.Herein,this article describes the use of cesium salt derivatives of tert-alcohols as alkyl radical precursors in a three-component reaction with styrene and aromatic acyl fluorides to synthesizeα-arylalkyl aryl ketones.The aroyl fluoride reacts with the NHC catalyst,leading to the formation of an acyl azolium ion.This acyl azolium ion can then be reduced by the photoredox catalyst,generating the corresponding ketyl radical anion.The C-radical generated from oxalate oxidation undergoes an addition reaction with the styrene derivative,followed by cross-coupling of the addition radical with the ketone radical,which is fragmented by NHC to give the target ketone.

Study on high-order frequency selective surface with interdigital capacitance loading

The application of frequency selection surfaces(FSSs)is limited by large area,narrow bandwidth,low stopband inhibition and large ripple in the passband.A method for designing high-order wide band miniaturized-element frequency selective surface(MEFSS)with capacitance loading is introduced.The proposed structure is composed of multiply sub-wavelength interdigital capacitance layer,sub-wavelength inductive wire grids separated by dielectric substrates.A simple equivalent circuit model,composed of short transmission lines coupled together with shunt inductors and capacitors,is presented for this structure.Using the equivalent circuit model and electromagnetic(EM)model,an analytical synthesis procedure is developed that can be used to synthesize the MEFSS from its desired system-level performance indicators such as the center frequency of operation,bandwidth and stopband inhibition.Using this synthesis procedure,a prototype of the proposed MEFSS with a third-order bandpass response,center frequency of 2.75 GHz,fractional bandwidth of 8%is designed,fabricated,and measured.The measurement results confirm the theoretical predictions and the design procedure of the structure and demonstrate that the proposed MEFSS has a stable frequency response with respect to the angle of incidence of the EM wave in the±30°range incidence,and the in-band return loss is greater than 18 dB,and the rejection in the stopband is greater than 25 dB at the frequency of 3.2 GHz.

Martensitic transformation(MT) path in Fe-based alloys remains uncertain in spite of decades of research. Lots of relevant works, which mostly focused on the simplest Bain path, have been completed by the state-of-the-art firstprinciples methods based on density functional theory. In this work, the element effects on microscopic thermodynamics and kinetics of the MT are investigated in terms of two different paths, including the well-known shear dominated Bogers-Burgers path and a recently proposed shuffle dominated path. Adding common elements, e.g. Ni, Mn, Cr, Si and C, into steel could induce different kinetics of the MT, as reflected by the energy barrier, which further determines the physically realistic MT path for different alloys. Furthermore, the addition of 3 d transition metals may adjust the transformation equilibrium between the tetragonal α martensite and the hexagonal ε martensite, as reflected by their inverse effect on the energy barrier for the α MT and the stacking fault energy relating to the ε formation. An expected correlation between the thermodynamic driving force and the kinetic energy barrier for the MT is confirmed in binary Fe–Ni and Fe–Cr systems with changing the concentration of the alloying elements. These two paths for the MT are elaborately compared and discussed to reveal the nature of atomic movement in the MT, dominated by shear or shuffle.
