Melatonin combined with chondroitin sulfate ABC promotes nerve regeneration after root-avulsion brachial plexus injury

After nerve-root avulsion injury of the brachial plexus, oxidative damage, inflammatory reaction, and glial scar formation can affect nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Melatonin(MT) has been shown to have good anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. Chondroitin sulfate ABC(ChABC) has been shown to metabolize chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans and can reduce colloidal scar formation. However, the effect of any of these drugs alone in the recovery of nerve function after injury is not completely satisfactory. Therefore, this experiment aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of combined application of melatonin and chondroitin sulfate ABC on nerve regeneration and functional recovery after nerve-root avulsion of the brachial plexus. Fifty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were selected and their C5–7 nerve roots were avulsed. Then, the C6 nerve roots were replanted to construct the brachial plexus nerve-root avulsion model. After successful modeling, the injured rats were randomly divided into four groups. The first group(injury) did not receive any drug treatment, but was treated with a pure gel-sponge carrier nerve-root implantation and an ethanol-saline solution via intraperitoneal(i.p.) injection. The second group(melatonin) was treated with melatonin via i.p. injection. The third group(chondroitin sulfate ABC) was treated with chondroitin sulfate ABC through local administration. The fourth group(melatonin + chondroitin sulfate ABC) was treated with melatonin through i.p. injection and chondroitin sulfate ABC through local administration. The upper limb Terzis grooming test was used 2–6 weeks after injury to evaluate motor function. Inflammation and oxidative damage within 24 hours of injury were evaluated by spectrophotometry. Immunofluorescence and neuroelectrophysiology were used to evaluate glial scar, neuronal protection, and nerve regeneration. Evolution and generation mechanism of retained oil in lacustrine shales: A combined ReaxFF-MD and pyrolysis simulation perspective

To accurately investigate the evolution characteristics and generation mechanism of retained oil, the study analyzed organic-rich lacustrine shale samples from the Paleogene Kongdian Formation in Cangdong Sag, Bohai Bay Basin. This analysis involves Rock-Eval pyrolysis, pyrolysis simulation experiments,Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer（GC-MS）, and reactive molecular dynamics simulations（Reax FF）. The results revealed the retained oil primarily consisted of n-alkanes with carbon numbers ranging from C14to C36. The generation of retained oil occurred through three stages. A slow growth stage of production rate was observed before reaching the peak of oil production in Stage I. Stage II involved a rapid increase in oil retention, with C12-C17and C24-C32serving as the primary components,increasing continuously during the pyrolysis process. The generation process involved the cleavage of weak bonds, including bridging bonds（hydroxyl, oxy, peroxy, imino, amino, and nitro）, ether bonds, and acid amides in the first stage（Ro= 0.50%-0.75%）. The carbon chains in aromatic ring structures with heteroatomic functional groups breaks in the second stage（Ro= 0.75%-1.20%）. In the third stage（Ro= 1.20%-2.50%）, the ring structures underwent ring-opening reactions to synthesize iso-short-chain olefins and radicals, while further breakdown of aliphatic chains occurred. By coupling pyrolysis simulation experiments and molecular simulation technology, the evolution characteristics and bond breaking mechanism of retained oil in three stages were revealed, providing a reference for the formation and evolution mechanism of retained oil.

Colour stabilities of three types of orthodontic clear aligners exposed to staining agents

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the colour stabilities of three types of orthodontic clear aligners exposed to staining agents in vitro. Sixty clear orthodontic aligners produced by three manufacturers （Invisalign, Angelalign, and Smartee） were immersed in three staining solutions （coffee, black tea, and red wine） and one control solution （distilled water）. After 12-h and 7-day immersions, the aligners were washed in an ultrasonic cleaner and measured with a colourimeter. The colour changes （△E＊） were calculated on the basis of the Commission Internationale de I＇Eclairage L＊a＊b＊ colour system （CIE L＊a＊b＊）, and the results were then converted into National Bureau of Standards （NBS） units. Fourier transformation infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy （SEM） were conducted to observe the molecular and morphologic alterations to the aligner surfaces, respectively. The three types of aligners exhibited slight colour changes after 12 h of staining, with the exception of the Invisalign aligners stained with coffee. The Invisalign aligners exhibited significantly higher AE＊ values （ranging from 0.30 to 27.81） than those of the Angelalign and Smartee aligners （AE＊ values ranging from 0.33 to 1.89 and 0.32 to 1.61, respectively, P〈O.05）. IFT-IR analysis confirmed that the polymer-based structure of aligners did not exhibit significant chemical differences before and after the immersions. The SEM results revealed different surface alterations to the three types of aligner materials after the 7-day staining. The three types of aesthetic orthodontic appliances exhibited colour stability after the 12-h immersion, with the exception of the Invisalign aligners stained by coffee. The Invisalign aligners were more prone than the Angelalign and Smartee aligners to pigmentation. Aligner materials may be improved by considering aesthetic colour stability properties.

Last digit tendency: Lucky numbers and psychological rounding in mobile transactions

The distribution of digits in numbers obtained from different sources reveals interesting patterns. The well-known Benford's law states that the first digits in many real-life numerical data sets have an asymmetric, logarithmic distribution in which small digits are more common;this asymmetry diminishes for subsequent digits, and the last digit tends to be uniformly distributed. In this paper, we investigate the digit distribution of numbers in a large mobile transaction data set with 835 million mobile transactions and payments made by approximately 460,000 users in more than 300 cities. Although the first digits of the numbers in these mobile transactions follow Benford's law, the last digit has a strong tendency to be a lucky number or be influenced by psychological rounding. This lucky number tendency is more significant in transactions that are more strongly connected to social interactions, such as money sent as gifts or as “red envelopes” (a traditional method of gift-giving during Chinese holidays), and in transactions by individuals with potentially greater emotional needs, such as during COVID-19 outbreaks and natural disasters. This psychological rounding tendency is more common in online e-commerce payments, in-store purchases, and money transfers between individuals. These findings are key for understanding the last digit tendency and its psychological and emotional mechanisms, which could be used as an indicator of public sentiment or in methods of detecting fraudulent business activity. © 2023

A cationic radical lanthanide organic tetrahedron with remarkable coordination enhanced radical stability

Rare–earth supramolecular compounds, such as lanthanide organic polyhedrons（LOPs）, are of particular interest due to their many possible applications in various fields. Here we report the first syntheses of Ln4(L·+)4–type(Ln, lanthanides; L·+, radical ligand) radical–bridged lanthanide organic tetrahedrons by self–assembly of face–capping triphenylamine（TPA）–cored radical ligand with different lanthanide *** coordination enhanced radical stability has been observed, with half–life times(t1/2) for L1·+,La4(L1·+)4, Eu4(L1·+)4, Gd4(L1·+)4, Tb4(L1·+)4and Lu4(L1·+)4estimated to be 53 min, 482 min, 624 min,1248 min, 822 min and 347 min, respectively. The TPA radical in Ln4(L1·+)4containing paramagnetic Ln ions（Ln = EuⅢ, GdⅢand TbⅢ） is observed to be more stable than that in Ln4(L1·+)4（Ln = LaⅢand LuⅢ）constructed by diamagnetic Ln ions. This difference in radical stability is possibly due to the magnetic interactions between paramagnetic LnⅢions and L1·+ligands, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance（EPR） in La4（L）4(L = L1and L1·+) and Tb4（L）4(L = L1and L1·+), and magnetic susceptibility measurements in Tb·4（L）4(L = L1and L1·+). Our study reveals the coordination of radical ligands with lanthanide ions can improve the radical stability, which is crucial for their applications.

MOF-derived Ni3Fe/Ni/NiFe2O4@C for enhanced hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Magnesium hydride（MgH2） is an important material for hydrogen（H2） storage and transportation owing to its high capacity and ***,its intrinsic properties have considerably limited its industrial *** this study,the NiFe-800 catalyst as metal-organic framework（MOF） derivative was first utilized to promote the intrinsic properties of *** to pure MgH2,which releases1.24 wt% H2in 60 min at 275℃,the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite releases 5.85 wt% H2in the same *** at a lower temperature of 250℃,the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite releases 3.57 wt% H2,surpassing the performance of pure MgH2at 275℃.Correspondingly,while pure MgH2absorbs 2.08 wt% H2in60 min at 125℃,the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite absorbs 5.35 wt% H2in just 1 min,Remarkably,the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite absorbs 2.27 wt% H2in 60 min at 50℃ and 4.64 wt% H2at 75℃.This indicates that MgH2-10 NiFe-800 exhibits optimum performance with excellent kinetics at low ***,the capacity of the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite remains largely stable after ***,the Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4acts as a "hydrogen pump",providing effective diffusion channels that enhance the kinetic process of the composite during ***,Fe0facilitates electron transfer and creates hydrogen diffusion channels and catalytic ***,carbon（C） effectively prevents particle agglomeration and maintains the cyclic stability of the ***,the synergistic effects of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4,Fe0,and C considerably improve the kinetic properties and cycling stability of *** work offers an effective and valuable approach to improving the hydrogen storage efficiency in the commercial application of MgH2.
