The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of souari nut peel on the fermentative characteristics and chemical composition of the Mombasa grass silage.A completely randomized design with five levels of addition(0%,5%,10%,15%and 20%in natural matter basis)of souari nut peel with three replicates was applied in the *** silos were opened at 55 d after starting the ensiling *** data were analyzed by means of linear/quadratic regression analysis,according to the best fit of the data and the probability values to 5%,using the Statistical Analysis System(SAS,2002).There were a linear decreasing effect on the neutral detergent fiber(NDF),ash and increasing values for the effluent in the *** effect was observed for crude protein(CP),lignin and *** the other factors dry matter(DM),acid detergent fiber(ADF)and gases there was no influence on the addition of souari nut *** 15%addition level of souari nut peel increased CP content,decreased NDF and pH,which was recommended to improve the fermentation profile of Mombasa grass silage.

Knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus and Self-Care Activities before and after an Educational Program: A Pilot Study

Background: Health education has proven to be an effective strategy to enable people with diabetes mellitus to manage this condition. However, few studies in Brazilian population samples have been conducted to evaluate the effects of educational programs on diabetes knowledge and self-care. Aim: To evaluate the knowledge about diabetes mellitus and the performance of self-care activities, before and after participation in an educational program. Methods: This is an intervention study, with a quantitative approach, in a single comparison group, for the analysis of “before and after” results related to an educational program focused on self-care and concurrent physical training. The study interventions consisted of 42 exercise sessions, as well as individual educational meetings, according to the needs of each participant and through nursing consultations, using educational material prepared from the literature. The sample was initially composed of 33 adults with diabetes mellitus, but 18 completed the study. For the assessment of knowledge and self-care activities, the revised Brazilian versions of the Diabetes Knowledge Scale and the Diabetes Self-Care Activity Questionnaire were used, respectively, in the two moments of the study, that is, prior to the first educational meeting and immediately before the first physical training session, and after the last educational meeting, which ran parallel to the 42nd physical training session, making a six-month interval between the two assessment moments for each participant. Results: The analysis of knowledge about diabetes showed significant improvement after the educational program and, as for self-care, there was clinical improvement in all dimensions, but only the dimension “general diet” obtained statistically significant improvement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the visible loss of sugar cane and the damage to the knuckles, using the John Deere 3520 harvester on three different travel speeds (3.0;4.0 and 5.0 km·h-1), in DIC with five repetitions in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. Each treatment was composed by six lines of harvested cane stumps, with a length of 290 m each. In these six lines, the remains of sugar cane left in the field were collected by placing the sampling frame in two central lines every 50 m, and separating 40 m of edge. The sampling area was surrounded by 2 m wide and 10 m long, totaling 20 m2. To calculate the damage to stumps, a visual methodology by [1], was used, which classifies the damage grade, ranging from 1 to 4. Fifty stumps were assessed randomly for each speed, in a sampling area of 1800 m2. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test at 5%, in order to compare the effect of different speeds on the losses and damages. There was no significant difference regarding the loss or damage by comparing the different speeds. Therefore, it is more advantageous to use the speed of 5.0 km·h-1, harvesting more in less time and causing the same level of damage.

Three-Dimensional Stress Concentration Factor in Finite Width Plates with a Circular Hole

The three-dimensional stress concentration factor (SCF) at the edge of elliptical and circular holes in infinite plates under remote tension has been extensively investigated considering the variations of plate thickness, hole dimensions and material properties, such as the Poisson’s coefficient. This study employs three dimensional finite element modeling to numerically investigate the effect of plate width on the behavior of the SCF across the thickness of linear elastic isotropic plates with a through-the-thickness circular hole under remote tension. The problem is governed by two geometric non-dimensional parameters, i.e., the plate half-width to hole radius (W/r) and the plate thickness to hole radius (B/r) ratios. It is shown that for thin plates the value of the SCF is nearly constant throughout the thickness for any plate width. As the plate thickness increases, the point of maximum SCF shifts from the plate middle plane and approaches the free surface. When the ratio of plate half-width to hole radius (W/r) is greater than four, the maximum SCF was observed to approximate the theoretical value determined for infinite plates. When the plate width is reduced, the maximum SCF values significantly increase. A polynomial curve fitting was employed on the numerical results to generate empirical formulas for the maximum and surface SCFs as a function of W/r and B/r. These equations can be applied, with reasonable accuracy, to practical problems of structural strength and fatigue, for instance.

Potentiometric and pluviometric datasets were evaluated to understand the behavior of aquifer recharge in the bauxite plateaus in the Porto Trombetas region, Pará, Northern Brazil. The datasets are originated from three monitoring wells and an automatic climatological station. The local groundwater is related to the Alter do Chao Aquifer System, which despite being unconfined in valley regions, is semiconfined in the plateaus areas. The aquifer recharge occurs by direct infiltration and by leakage from the aquitard in the unconfined and semiconfined portions, respectively. Precipitation declined by 27% between 2002 and 2017. The rains accumulated between February and April are the most important for the recharge processes since this period is marked by higher absolute precipitation (up to 300 mm/month) and less deviation from the historical pattern. The recharge measured by the annual fluctuation of the water table also declined significantly in the 2010-2016 period. Statistical analysis demonstrates that in the case of a permanent climate change, expressed by rainfall reducing, the aquifer recharge would diminish at a non-linear rate, which is also expected for the base flow rates. In addition, data evaluation reveals that deforestation intensely decreases the recharge rates, as observed in the Aviso Plateau mining site. The results demonstrate that the water table fluctuations must be considered when modeling Global Climate Changes since the maintenance of surface flow rates (springs, lakes and streams) depends on aquifers baseflow. The result of the statistical analysis can be also applied to regions where climate patterns are strong seasonal, as the Savannah of Central Brazil.

It is common knowledge that we live in an environment which comprises ionizing radiation （X-rays, gamma rays）. These radiation in normal situations is produced by natural phenomena such as cosmic rays from different sources in Universe and the decay of radioactive elements present in the Earth planet atmosphere and crust. Ionizing radiation can also be produced by human activities such as those related to nuclear power generation and use in medicine and industry. Although ionizing radiations are part of our daily lives, few students or researchers have the opportunity to perform measurements and observations of the background radiation. To overcome this deficiency in education, we started a pilot project that propose measures and observations of environmental radiation background with students of the ITA （Technological Institute of Aeronautics, Silo Paulo）. Using compact and portable detector to observe gamma radiation like described in this work, many graduate students can participate.

Daily Variability of Radon Gas in Brazilian Tropics Near Ground Level Surface

By monitoring the ionizing radiation from minute to minute in S^o Jos6 dos Campos, SP, Brazil （230 S, 450 W） using Geiger counter, during January to August 2015, it has confirmed the presence of radon gas in these measures. The observation confirms the existence of a periodicity of 24 hours through the technique （Fast Fourier Transform） applied to the data set, and this cycle can be better visible in longer dry periods. On rainy days or with heavy fog in the region, this periodicity is modified or even disappears. As Geiger do not detect alpha particles due to absorption in the walls of the sensor tube, it measured X and gamma rays coming from the radon gas progeny. Radon gas （222Rn） has a half-life of 19.7 minutes to decays in 214Bi emitting gamma ray energy （45%） with 0.609 MeV which is monitored daily by Geiger. Also 222Rn decays in 26.8 minutes in 214pb giving （37%） with 0.35 MeV and others with less energy. It is confirmed the good performance ofa Geiger tube with LND 712 working with about 500 VDC rated voltage.

Correlation between Rainfall and Cold Fronts with Gamma Ray Measurements near Ground Level in Southeastern Brazil

Gamma radiation measurements integrated between 200 keV and 10.0 MeV were performed between 03/07/2017 and 05/24/2017 from a tower of 25 meters of altitude in the region of S^o Jos6 dos Campos, SP, Brazil. Throughout this period, there were 9 intense and moderate rains with 11 arrivals of cold fronts coming from southern Brazil. Through measurements of gamma radiation integrated in the energy range mentioned above, the presence of these meteorological parameters and their variations in the region can clearly be observed. Through a potential calibration between the measured gamma radiation intensity and the observed rainfall intensity, it is possible to monitor rains by time interval using this gamma ray detector. Another very important parameter for the region consists of monitoring the number of passages of cold fronts that interfere in the local climatology. This low-cost, easy-to-operate technique can be applied and used in any tropical and equatorial region of the earth＇s surface.

In Brazil, the amount of pesticides consumed doubled in the last 10 years. Thus, in 2008 it assumed the lead position in the world. However, its indiscriminate application in agriculture without the use of the necessary care has contributed to environmental degradation and increased occupational exposures, making it a serious health problem in the country. The recent study looked to evaluate the auditory health and risk factors in rural workers exposed to pesticides in Piedade de Caratinga County—MG, and chart their socioeconomic profile and lifestyle while identifying the types of crops and the use and management of pesticides. Developed, then, a descriptive and exploratory study involving 23 men, rural workers, exposed to pesticides, with no history of exposure to noise, with changes in meatoscopy and aged ≤50 years of age. The results show the sample consisted of 23 men with a mean age of 36.7 ± 9.3, whom have low education, with a monthly income of 1 minimum wage, working in the fields for over 15 years. There was a predominance of horticulture using organophosphate pesticides and pyrethroids. Part of the sample shows auditory loss, the most common sensorineural conductive loss. It is essential that the population exposed to this type of risk is informed and receives guidance from educational campaigns developed by the multidisciplinary team of basic health units.
