Efficient honey production requires knowledge about the behavior of the workers and the parameters that influence the strength of the colony. In this study, the objective was to analyze the interaction between the foraging behavior of worker honeybees and pollen storage levels in Africanized honeybees colonies. Colonies with low pollen storage increased pollen intake rates, but this value was 15% lower than colonies with high pollen storage, demonstrating a direct relationship between the pollen storage levels and foraging activity. The difference in pollen intake rates varied according to the number of foraging honeybees and pollen load collected by each individual. Under both high and low pollen storage, colonies returned pollen storage to initial level within 16 days, suggesting that honeybees regulate pollen storage levels around a homeostatic set point. Relationship between pollen storage levels and colony brood production was also found, indicating how alterations in the behavior of each individual can affect the strength of the colony.

In the study, we report the comparative efficacy of the sodium hyaluronate gel vaginal application and promestriene cream which were tested to treat the gynecological symptoms of people who suffered from vaginal dryness. Method: 35 patients applied sodium hyaluronate vaginal gel one time a day for a period of two times a week during three weeks and other 33 patients using promestriene cream applied it every day for a period of three weeks also. Results: No significant difference was observed between vaginal application of sodium hyaluronate gel and promestriene cream, regarding both, as regarding the dryness of the intimate mucosa (p = 0.786), the attribute of moisturizing properties to the intimate mucosa (p = 0.142), the comfort sensation (p = 0.528), and no significant difference was observed regarding the fragrance of the product (p = 0.088). Conclusion: The similar results between vaginal application of both products support the use of sodium hyaluronate vaginal gel (Lubrinat®) in the initial approach of symptoms of vaginal dryness.

In this paper, data analysis and modeling of gamma ray tomography taken into account spatial resolution and source of errors and the attenuation coefficient measurement in row data from tomography process are presented. The results showed that this method is simple, effective and should be prior to any data treatment for opaque vessel reactor and by reconstruction algorithm in process imaging.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) presents a strategic role in social and economic levels. The aim of this study was to elucidate the presence of genetic variability for the genus Oryza, and the possibility of using genotypes with wild characteristics in rice breeding programs. The Oryza genus shows great genetic variability through wild genotypes available in the most varied environments around the world. The negative effects imposed by abiotic stresses such as flood, salinity, low temperatures, water deficiency and high temperatures may be minimized by the efficient identification of a genetic variability source from the Oryza genus. Among the main wild species presented by the Oryza genus, Oryza glumaepatula stands out being an active source of germplasm. The occurrence and preservation of genetic variability of Oryza genus is indispensable to obtain new rice genotypes, to guarantee food security for the human population, as well as to develop genotypes that adapt to climatic changes and natural adversities.

This article deals with the short story “Hiato”, part of the collection Tutaméia： Tereeiras estdrias by Joāo Guimarāes rosa. When Tutaméia was released, it caused some discomfort for being too inventive. We will analyze the story in relation to the book proposal and the literary field when it was released. The short story presents an allegory of deform or an indetermination procedure that creates deformations in the form. “Hiato” is related to the author＇s concept of fiction as a representation that validates itself through the relations it establishes with cultural representations. These relations of representation with culture call attention to the significances that history aggregates to linguistic uses and, simultaneously, proposes meaninglessness of decisive representational moments. The effect is a critical reflection on the historicity of representations in culture which fiction makes undetermined as a future strategy.

Soil Water Availability on Growth and development of Safflower Plants

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a promising culture to be widespread in Brazil. However, the lack of basic knowledge about cultivation techniques, such as water demand by the culture, is still obstacle to the expansion of safflower in that country. The objective was, then, to evaluate the effect of the soil water availability on growth and development of safflower in the Cerrado soil of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with five water availabilities (25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 125% of the maximum water holding capacity in the soil) and four replications. Maintenance soil moisture was performed by gravimetric method with daily weighing of experimental units. The variables analyzed were: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of heads, heads diameter, dry mass of shoots, heads, and roots. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and regression test at 5% probability by SISVAR program. All variables set to the quadratic regression model, showing the best results in the water availability between 64% and 76%. Safflower is shown to be more sensitive to water stress with increased tolerance to water deficit in the soil than to flooding.

The safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is adapted to grow in adverse conditions, is tolerant to salinity and water deficit, however, its productivity increases when grown in areas with greater availability of water and in fertilized conditions, showing that the knowledge of crop management can bring income gains for producers. It is known that extreme conditions of soil moisture damage the crop development. Given this context, the objective was to evaluate the influence of water availability on the nutritional characteristics of the safflower. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design with five water availabilities (25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 125% of the maximum water holding capacity of the soil) in four replications. Maintaining soil moisture was performed by gravimetric method with daily weighing of experimental units. The variables analyzed were SPAD reading (chlorophyll content), concentration and accumulation of nitrogen in the shoot and in the sections. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and regression test at 5% probability by Sisvar program. There was adjusting of variables to linear and quadratic regression models. Water availabilities between 65% and 75% have greater potential to promote better nutrition for safflower plants. Both deficit and excess of water in the soil are detrimental to the absorption of nitrogen and reduce the chlorophyll content. Safflower is less tolerant to excess than to deficit of water.

Syzygium aromaticum L.(Clove)Essential Oil as a Reducing Agent for the Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles

The present investigation details a green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using the essential oil of Syzygium aromaticum L. (clove) as reducing agent, which is a matrix with a high content of eugenol, an important compound for the reducing action of silver nitrate. The synthesis of AgNP was performed at different pH conditions (pH 7, 8, 9 and 10), and was monitored by UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The synthesized nanoparticles presented characteristic Surface Plasmon Resonance bands with maximum absorbance between 405 and 460 nm. The DLS analysis revealed particle sizes from 31 to 72 nm and zeta potential between -30.1 and -50.8 mV indicating good stability against the agglomeration of the particles in solution. The micrographs obtained by TEM showed different particle shapes and a predominance of spherical-shaped nanoparticles, and average size ranging from 27 to 94 nm. The clove-based silver nanoparticles were efficient in controlling the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, and the minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 60 to 100 μL/mL. This study highlights the feasibility of clove essential oil as an alternative for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles by a simple, inexpensive and eco-friendly method.
