Perineal rectosigmoidectomy for strangled rectal prolapse:A case report

Strangled rectal prolapse, the rare disease, is a proctological emergency. Its management is controversial. When it is not reducible and signs of ischemia are present, the Altemeierperineal rectosigmoidectomy remains the best treatment. This study aimed to report our experience on the management of strangled rectal prolapse about 1 case in a 45-year-old man, a holder of a rectal prolapse for 2 years. On admission, he had strangled prolapse for 24 hours with edema. After a vain attempt of manual reduction and installation of necrosis after 48 hours, he had an Altemeier rectosigmo?dectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the 6th postoperative day. The results were very good, after one year follow-up.

Trans-arterial chemoperfusion for the treatment of liver metastases of breast cancer and colorectal cancer: Clinical results in palliative care patients

AIm To evaluate the clinical value and efficiency of transarterial chemoperfusion(TACP) in patients with liver metastases from breast cancer(BC) and colorectal cancer(CRC).mETHODS We treated 36 patients with liver metastases of BC(n = 19, 19 females) and CRC(n = 17; 8 females, 9 males) with repeated TACP. The treatment interval was 4 wk. TACP was performed with gemcitabine(1000 mg/m2) and mitomycin(10 mg/m2), administered within 1 h after positioning the catheter tip in the hepatic artery. Before treatment, the size, location, tumour volume, vascularization and number of liver tumours were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging(mRI). Tumour response was evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors *** TACP using gemcitabine and mitomycin for metastases from CRC and BC was performed without any serious side effects. The follow-up mRI showed a therapeutic response in 84.2% of the BC patients-stable disease 47.4% and partial response 36.8%. A progression was seen in 15.8%.CRC patients showed a therapeutic response in 52.9% of cases. A progression of the disease was documented in 47.1% of the patients with CRC. These data show that TACP in patients with liver metastases of BC leads to a significantly better therapeutic response compared with CRC patients(P = 0.042). The median survival time was 13.2 mo for the BC patients, which is significantly longer than for CRC patients at 9.3 mo(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION TACP for liver metastases of BC appears to be a safe and effective palliative treatment with improved outcomes in comparison to patients with CRC.

Deep-learning based denoising and reconstruction of super-resolution structured illumination microscopy images

Super-resolution structured illumination microscopy(SR-SIm) provides an up to twofold enhanced spatial resolution of fluorescently labeled samples. The reconstruction of high-quality SR-SIm images critically depends on patterned illumination with high modulation contrast. Noisy raw image data(e.g., as a result of low excitation power or low exposure time), result in reconstruction artifacts. Here, we demonstrate deep-learning based SR-SIm image denoising that results in high-quality reconstructed images. A residual encoding–decoding convolutional neural network(RED-Net) was used to successfully denoise computationally reconstructed noisy SR-SIm *** also demonstrate the end-to-end deep-learning based denoising and reconstruction of raw SIm images into high-resolution SR-SIm images. Both image reconstruction methods prove to be very robust against image reconstruction artifacts and generalize very well across various noise levels. The combination of computational image reconstruction and subsequent denoising via RED-Net shows very robust performance during inference after training even if the microscope settings change.

Comparative analysis of Solanum stoloniferum responses to probing by the green peach aphid myzus persicae and the potato aphid macrosiphum euphorbiae

Plants protect themselves against aphid attacks by species-specific de- fense mechanisms. Previously, we have shown that Solanum stoloniferum Schlechtd has resistance factors to myzus persicae Sulzer （Homoptera： Aphididae） at the epidermal/mesophyll level that are not effective against macrosiphum euphorbiae thomas （Homoptera： Aphididae）. Here, we compare the nymphal mortality, the pre-reproductive development time, and the probing behavior of m. persicae and m. euphorbiae on S. stoloniferum and Solanum tuberosum L. Furthermore, we analyze the changes in gene expression in S. stoloniferum 96 hours post infestation by either aphid species. Although the m. euphorbiae probing behavior shows that aphids encounter more probing constrains on phloem activities-longer probing and salivation time- on S. stoloniferum than on S. tuberosum, the aphids succeeded in reaching a sustained ingestion of phloem sap on both plants. Probing by m. persicae on S. stoloniferum plants resulted in limited feeding only. Survival of m. euphorbiae and m. persicae was affected on young leaves, but not on senescent leaves of S. stoloniferum. Infestation by m. euphorbiae changed the expression of more genes than m. persicae did. At the systemic level both aphids elicited a weak response. Infestation orS. stoloniferum plants with a large number ofm. persicae induced morphological changes in the leaves, leading to the development of pustules that were caused by disrupted vascular parenchyma and surrounding tissue. In contrast, an infesta- tion by m. euphorbiae had no morphological effects. Both plant species can be regarded as good host for m. euphorbiae, whereas only S. tuberosum is a good host for m. persicae and S. stoloniferum is not. Infestation ofS. stoloniferum by m. persicae or m. euphorbiae changed the expression of a set of plant genes specific for each of the aphids as well as a set of common genes.
