Surface energy-mediated fibronectin adsorption and osteoblast responses on nanostructured diamond

Nanostructured diamond have potential applications in many biomedical related fields and demonstrated extraordinary capacity to influence cellular responses. Studying the surface property of nanodiamond and its influence to protein adsorption and subsequent cellular responses along with the mechanism behind such capacity becomes more important. Here the role of surface energy associated with nanostructured diamond in modulating fibronectin and osteoblast(OB, bone forming cells) responses was investigated. Nanocrystalline diamond(NCD) and submicron crystalline diamond(SMCD) films with controllable surface energy were prepared by microwave-enhanced plasma chemical vapor deposition(MPCVD) techniques. Fibronectin adsorption on the diamond films with varied surface energy values was measured via the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and the relationship between the surface energy and fibronectin adsorption was studied. The result indicated that fibronectin adsorption on nanostructured surfaces was closely related to both surface energy and material microstructures. The spreading and migration of OB aggregates(each containing 30–50 cells) on the NCD with varied surface energy values were also studied. The result indicates a correlation between the cell spreading and migration on nanodiamond and the surface energy of nanostructured surface.

Objective To investigate the effect of horizontal platform supported (HPS) prosthesis on cementless total hip replacement for surgical treatment of arthritis in a long-term follow-up *** Clinical and radiographic follow-up of 65 consecutive primary cementless porous coated HPS total hip replacements, which were implanted in 60 patients between 1982 and 1989, was carried *** The 53 hips in 50 patients were evaluated both clinically and radiographically. The average follow-up was 6.8 years (range: 5 to 12 years). According to the Harris hip score, 52 (98%) of the hips had sustained an excellent or good result with an average score of 92. At the time of final assessment, no patient experienced anterior thigh pain. There were two revisions performed early in the series due to technical failures. Radiographically, osteolysis and bone re-modelling were assessed. Conclusion The findings suggest that the clinical and radiographic results after cementless total hip replacement for primary hip arthroplasty may be favourably influenced by the use of the proximal stress loaded HPS femoral component.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been recognized as one of the biggest public health issues of the 21 st century. Both ARB and ARGs have been determined in water after treatment with conventional disinfectants. Ultraviolet (UV) technology has been seen growth in application to disinfect the water. However, UV method alone is not adequate to degrade ARGs in water. Researchers are investigating the combination of UV with other oxidants (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and photocatalysts) to harness the high reactivity of produced reactive species (C1-, C1O -, Cl2-,-OH, and SO4-_) in such processes with constituents of cell (e.g., deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and its components) in order to increase the degradation efficiency of ARGs. This paper briefly reviews the current status of different UV-based treatments (UV/chlorination, UV/H2O2, UV/PMS, and UV-photocatalysis) to degrade ARGs and to control horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in water. The review also provides discussion on the mechanism of degradation of ARGs and application of q-PCR and gel electrophoresis to obtain insights of the fate of ARGs during UV-based treatment processes.

By prohibiting fishing, marine protected areas （MPAs） provide a refuge for harvested species. Humans are often perceived as predators by prey and therefore respond fearfully to humans. Thus, fish responses to humans inside and outside of an MPA can provide insights into their perception of humans as a predatory threat. Previous studies have found differences in the distance that har- vested species of fish initiate flight （flight initiation distance--FID） from humans inside and outside an MPA, but less is known about unharvested species. We focused on whether the lined bristle- tooth Ctenochaetus striatus, an unharvested surgeonfish, can discriminate between a snorkeler and a snorkeler with a spear gun inside and outside of a no-take MPA in Mo＇orea, French Polynesia. Additionally, we incorporated starting distance （the distance between the person and prey at the start of an experimental approach）, a variable that has been found to be important in as- sessing prey escape decisions in terrestrial species, but that has not been extensively studied in aquatic systems. Lined bristletooth FID was significantly greater in the presence of a spear gun and varied depending on if the spear gun encounter was inside or outside of the MPA. These results imply a degree of sophistication of fish antipredator behavior, generate questions as to how a non- targeted species of fish could acquire fear of humans, and demonstrate that behavioral surveys can provide insights about antipredator behavior.

Abstract We consider the polytope arising from a marked surface by flips of triangulations. D. D. Sleator, R. E. Tarjan, and W. P. Thurston [j. Amer. Math. Soc., 1988, 1(3): 647 681] studied the diameter of the associahedron, which is the polytope arising from a marked disc by flips of triangulations. They showed that every shortest path between two vertices in a face does not leave that face. We give a new method, which is different from the one used by V. Disarlo and H. Parlier [arXiv: 1411.4285] to establish the same non-leaving-face property for all unpunctured marked surfaces.

Epigenetics of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors:A clinicopathologic perspective

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(GEP-NETs) are a heterogeneous group of rare tumors whose site-specific tumor incidence and clinical behavior vary widely. Genetic alterations associated with familial inherited syndromes have been well defined; however, the genetic profile of sporadic tumors is less clear as their tumorigenesis does not appear to be controlled by classic oncogenes such as P53, RB, or KRAS. Even within GEP-NETs, there are no common oncogenic drivers; for example, DAXX/ATRX mutations are strongly implicated in the tumorigenesis of pancreatic but not small bowel NETs. Accordingly, the dysregulation of epigenetic mechanisms has been hypothesized as a potential regulator of GEPNET tumorigenesis and has become a major focus of recent studies. Despite the heterogeneity of tumor cohorts evaluated in these studies, it is obvious that there are methylation patterns, chromatin remodeling alterations, and microR NA and long non-coding RNA(lncR NA) differential expression profiles that are distinctive of GEPNETs, some of which are correlated with significant differences in clinical outcomes. Several translational studies have provided convincing data identifying potential prognostic biomarkers, and some of these have demonstrated preliminary success as serum biomarkers that can be used clinically. Nevertheless, there are many opportunities to further define the mechanisms by which these epigenetic modifications influence tumorigenesis, and this will provide better insight into their prognostic and therapeutic utility. Furthermore, these findings form the foundation for future studies evaluating the clinical efficacy of epigenetic modifications as prognostic biomarkers, as well as potential therapeutic targets.

Towards intelligent geospatial data discovery:a machine learning framework for search ranking

Current search engines in most geospatial data portals tend to induce users to focus on one single-data characteristic dimension(*** and release date).This approach largely fails to take account of users’multidimensional preferences for geospatial data,and hence may likely result in a less than optimal user experience in discovering the most applicable *** study reports a machine learning framework to address the ranking challenge,the fundamental obstacle in geospatial data discovery,by(1)identifying a number of ranking features of geospatial data to represent users’multidimensional preferences by considering semantics,user behavior,spatial similarity,and static dataset metadata attributes;(2)applying a machine learning method to automatically learn a ranking function;and(3)proposing a system architecture to combine existing search-oriented open source software,semantic knowledge base,ranking feature extraction,and machine learning *** show that the machine learning approach outperforms other methods,in terms of both precision at K and normalized discounted cumulative *** an early attempt of utilizing machine learning to improve the search ranking in the geospatial domain,we expect this work to set an example for further research and open the door towards intelligent geospatial data discovery.
