A phased approach to enable hybrid simulation of complex structures

Hybrid simulation has been shown to be a cost-effective approach for assessing the seismic performance of structures. In hybrid simulation,critical parts of a structure are physically tested,while the remaining portions of the system are concurrently simulated computationally,typically using a finite element model. This combination is realized through a numerical time-integration scheme,which allows for investigation of full system-level responses of a structure in a cost-effective manner. However,conducting hybrid simulation of complex structures within large-scale testing facilities presents significant challenges. For example,the chosen modeling scheme may create numerical inaccuracies or even result in unstable simulations; the displacement and force capacity of the experimental system can be exceeded; and a hybrid test may be terminated due to poor communication between modules(e.g.,loading controllers,data acquisition systems,simulation coordinator). These problems can cause the simulation to stop suddenly,and in some cases can even result in damage to the experimental specimens; the end result can be failure of the entire experiment. This study proposes a phased approach to hybrid simulation that can validate all of the hybrid simulation components and ensure the integrity largescale hybrid simulation. In this approach,a series of hybrid simulations employing numerical components and small-scale experimental components are examined to establish this preparedness for the large-scale experiment. This validation program is incorporated into an existing,mature hybrid simulation framework,which is currently utilized in the Multi-Axial Full-Scale Sub-Structuring Testing and Simulation(MUST-SIM) facility of the George e. Brown Network for earthquake engineering Simulation(NeeS) equipment site at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Identification and classification of transient pulses observed in magnetometer array data by time-domain principal component analysis filtering

A method for identification of pulsations in time series of magnetic field data which are simultaneously present in multiple channels of data at one or more sensor locations is described. Candidate pulsations of interest are first identified in geomagnetic time series by inspection. Time series of these ＂training events＂ are represented in matrix form and transpose-multiplied to generate time- domain covariance matrices. The ranked eigenvectors of this matrix are stored as a feature of the pulsation. In the second stage of the algorithm, a sliding window （approxi- mately the width of the training event） is moved across the vector-valued time-series comprising the channels on which the training event was observed. At each window position, the data covariance matrix and associated eigen- vectors are calculated. We compare the orientation of the dominant eigenvectors of the training data to those from the windowed data and flag windows where the dominant eigenvectors directions are similar. This was successful in automatically identifying pulses which share polarization and appear to be from the same source process. We apply the method to a case study of continuously sampled （50 Hz） data from six observatories, each equipped with three- component induction coil magnetometers. We examine a 90-day interval of data associated with a cluster of four observatories located within 50 km of Napa, California, together with two remote reference stations-one 100 km to the north of the cluster and the other 350 km south. When the training data contains signals present in the remote reference observatories, we are reliably able to identify and extract global geomagnetic signals such as solar-generated noise. When training data contains pulsations only observed in the cluster of local observatories, we identify several types of non-plane wave signals having similar polarization.

AIM: To further analyze the interaction of tupaia CD81 with hepatitis C virus (HCV) envelope protein e2. MeTHODS: A tupaia CD81 large extracellular loop (CD81 LeL), which binds to HCV e2 protein, was cloned and expressed as a GST-fusion protein, and interaction of HCV e2 protein with a tupaia CD81 LeL was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (eIA). ReSULTS: Although tupaia and human CD81 LeL differed in 6 amino acid changes, tupaia CD81 LeL was strongly recognized by anti-CD81 antibodies against human CD81 LeL conformation-dependent epitopes. Investigating LeL CD81-e2 interactions by eIA, we demonstrated that binding of tupaia CD81 LeL GST fusion protein to recombinant HCV e2 protein was markedly reduced compared to binding of human CD81 LeL GST fusion protein to recombinant HCV e2 protein. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that the structural differences in-between the tupaia and human CD81 may alter the interaction of the large extracellular loop with HCV envelope glycoprotein e2. These findings may be important for the understanding of the mechanisms of binding and entry of HCV to PTHs.

Automation of production in the nurseries of flower producing companies using barcode scanners have been attempted but with little *** laser barcode scanners which have been used for automation have failed due to the close proximity between the barcode and the scanner,and factors such as speed,angle of inclination of the barcode,damage to the barcode and dirt on the ***,laser barcode scanners are still being used manually in the nurseries making work laborious and time consuming,which leading to reduced ***,an automated image-based barcode detection system to help solve the aforementioned problems was *** were conducted under different situations with clean and artificially soiled Code 128 barcodes in both the laboratory and under real production conditions in a flower producing *** images were analyzed with a specific algorithm developed with the software tool *** the results from the company showed that the image-based system has a future prospect for automation in the nursery.

Performance Modelling of Patient Flow Scheduling Through a Formal Method

Smart environment is being used in many areas to deliver more services to individuals in a physical space, such as a hospital. In the UK, the National Health Service(NHS) provides free and high quality healthcare service for all residents. Smart hospital environment is able to support NHS and provide more convenience. Patient flow scheduling is a crucial section in a smart hospital environment. Smart hospital environment aims to provide a smart environment in the hospital to facilitate individual experience and improve the quality of healthcare *** of all, this paper investigates a real world patient flow scenario of a hospital in the UK and models a general scheduling scheme based on the scenario using a compositional formal approach, i.e. performance evaluation process algebra(PePA). This scheduling scheme uses an easy-implemented solution(the grouping scheme) to reduce the waiting queue in the hospital. Secondly, fluid flow analysis is used for the performance analysis by generating a set of ordinary differential equations(ODes) in terms of the PePA model.

Influence of groundwater depth on species composition and community structure in the transition zone of Cele oasis

The paper analyzes the hypothesis that the distribution of dominant plant species and characteristics of plant communities are related to groundwater depth. The results showed that variations of groundwater depth impacted distributions and characteristics of dominant plant communities. However, besides groundwater depth, the community composition and species diversity were also influenced by physiognomy of the habitat. Based on the similarity coefficient, the differences between dominant plant communities were significant at different groundwater depths. Compared with other results relating to desert vegetation and groundwater depth, variations of community distribution were similar at the large spatial scale. However, in this extremely arid region, there were significant differences in community type and community succession when compared with other arid regions, especially in relationship to deep groundwater depth. With groundwater depth from deep to shallow, communities transformed with the sequence of Alhagi communities, Tamarix spp. communities, Populus communities, Phragmites communities, and Sophora communities. At groundwater depth of less than 6.0 m, the community type and composition changed, and the species diversity increased. Among these dominant species, Tamarix exhibited the biggest efficiency in resource utilization according to niche breadth, which means it possessed the best adaptability to environmental conditions at the oasis margins.

Mental health status in veterans residing in rural versus non-rural areas: results from the veterans’ health study

Background: The majority of Veterans Affair(VA) hospitals are in urban areas. We examined whether veterans residing in rural areas have lower mental health service use and poorer mental health ***: Veterans with at least 1 warzone deployment in central and northeastern Pennsylvania were randomly selected for an interview. Mental health status, including posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), major depression, alcohol abuse and mental health global severity, were assessed using structured interviews. Psychiatric service use was based on self-reported utilization in the past 12 months. Results were compared between veterans residing in rural and non-rural areas. Data were also analyzed using multivariate logistic regression to minimize the influence by confounding ***: A total of 1730 subjects(55% of the eligible veterans) responded to the survey and 1692 of them had complete geocode information. Those that did not have this information(n=38), were excluded from some analyses. Veterans residing in rural areas were older, more often of the white race, married, and experienced fewer stressful events. In comparison to those residing in non-rural areas, veterans residing in rural areas had lower global mental health severity scores;they also had fewer mental health visits. In multivariate logistic regression, rural residence was associated with lower service use, but not with PTSD, major depression, alcohol abuse, and global mental health severity score after adjusting confounding factors(e.g., age, gender, marital status and education).Conclusions: Rural residence is associated with lower mental health service use, but not with poor mental health in veterans with former warzone deployment, suggesting rural residence is possibly protective.

In this paper we consider a specific model of membrane systems, i. e. membrane systems with attributes. In these systems, the information is placed at the membranes in form of attributes, no objects are considered inside the membranes except for other membranes. The membrane system with attributes evolves according to rules that compute new values for the attributes from the attributes assigned to the membranes involved in the rule. The model of membrane systems with attributes allows us to specify business transactions in a precise way and to simulate different models for such transactions with a suitable tool for membrane systems with attributes.

An Overview to the Concept of Smart Coupling and Battery Management for Grid Connected Photovoltaic Battery System

The paper gives an overview on the need for smart coupling for battery management in grid integrated renewable energy system （ReS）. Grid integrated photovoltaic （PV） battery system, as being popular and extensively used has been discussed in the paper. Smart coupling refers to intelligent grid integration such that it can foresee local network conditions and issue battery power flow management strategy accordingly to shave the peak PV and peak load. Therefore, a need for predictive energy management arises for smart integration to the grid and supervision of the power flow in accordance to the grid conditions. This is also a running project at the Institute of energy Systems （INeS）, Offenburg University of Applied Science, Germany since January, 2015. The paper should provide insights to the motivation, need and gives an outlook to the features of desired predictive energy management system （PeMS）.
