Learning to select the recombination operator for derivative-free optimization

Extensive studies on selecting recombination operators adaptively,namely,adaptive operator selection(AOS),during the search process of an evolutionary algorithm(EA),have shown that AOS is promising for improving EA's performance.A variety of heuristic mechanisms for AOS have been proposed in recent decades,which usually contain two main components:the feature extraction and the policy *** feature extraction refers to as extracting relevant features from the information collected during the search *** policy setting means to set a strategy(or policy)on how to select an operator from a pool of operators based on the extracted *** components are designed by hand in existing studies,which may not be efficient for adapting optimization *** this paper,a generalized framework is proposed for learning the components of AOS for one of the main streams of EAs,namely,differential evolution(DE).In the framework,the feature extraction is parameterized as a deep neural network(DNN),while a Dirichlet distribution is considered to be the policy.A reinforcement learning method,named policy gradient,is used to train the *** case studies,the proposed framework is applied to two DEs including the classic DE and a recently-proposed DE,which result in two new algorithms named PG-DE and PG-MPEDE,*** on the Congress of Evolutionary Computation(CEC)2018 test suite show that the proposed new algorithms perform significantly better than their ***,we prove theoretically that the considered classic methods are the special cases of the proposed framework.

The impact of Internet access on household dietary quality:Evidence from rural China

Over the past few decades,the Internet has rapidly diffused across *** spread of the Internet has had a profound economic and social impact on Chinese rural *** research shows that Internet access significantly impacts agricultural production and improves smallholder farmers’*** these,the Internet can affect other dimensions of social ***,research about the impact of Internet access on dietary quality in rural China remains *** study utilizes multi-period panel data from Fixed Observation Point in rural China from 2009 to 2015 to estimate the impact of Internet access on dietary quality and food consumption of rural households and conducts a causal *** models with time and household fixed effects allow robust estimation while reducing potential issues of unobserved *** estimates show that Internet access has significantly increased rural household dietary quality(measured by the Chinese Diet Balance Index).Further research finds that Internet access has increased the consumption of animal products,such as aquatic and dairy *** also examine the underlying *** access improves dietary quality and food consumption mainly through increasing household income and food *** results encourage the promotion of Internet access as a valuable tool for nutritional improvements,especially in rural areas.

Offset restoration in total hip arthroplasty:Important:A current review

Normal vertical and horizontal offset is essential for hip biomechanics,muscle functioning and gait *** hip arthroplasty(THA)should aim to restore normal offset with implantation of femoral and acetabular *** would be possible with proper preoperative planning,templating and ensuring implant options are available for offset *** is essential for understanding the vertical and horizontal offset change,especially in hip arthritis presenting late with significant limb length discrepancy at *** should include appropriate soft tissue releases and the use of ideal implants to achieve restoration of horizontal and vertical *** correction of horizontal offset at THA for fracture neck of femur could result in abductor fatigue,limp and increased *** of horizontal offset is imperative at THA for a fractured neck of the femur to achieve optimal abductor *** offset is necessary for optimal abductor muscle tension and *** THA for acetabular bone loss would require hip center restoration with the acetabular and femoral offset correction to achieve limb length correction and abductor *** inability to achieve vertical and horizontal offset correction could lead to dislocation or signs of abductor *** vertical and horizontal femur offset restoration is required for normal hip biomechanics,decreased wear and increased longevity.

Date palm pit(DPP)-filled poly(-hydroxybutyrate)(PHB)composites were prepared,evaluated,and characterized to determine their thermal insulation *** conductivity values ranged between 0.086 and 0.100 W/(m·K).At a maximum filler concentration(50%(w)),the specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity were 1183 J/(kg·K)and 0.0689 mm^(2)/s,*** DPP increased the thermal stability,and the highest compressive strength obtained was 80 MPa at 30%filler *** PHB-DPP composites exhibited promising water absorption(less than 6%)and tensile strength(6-14 MPa).Date-pit-based PHB composites could be used in sustainable building engineering and cleaner production.

Piezoelectric resonant de-icing systems are attracting great *** paper aims to assess the implementation of these systems at the aircraft *** article begins with the model to compute the power requirement of a piezoelectric resonant de-icing system sized from the prototype detailed in Part 1/2 of this *** the mass,drag,and fuel consumption of this system and the subcomponents needed for its implementation are *** features of a piezoelectric resonant de-icing system are finally computed for aircraft similar to Airbus A320 aircraft and aircraft of different categories(Boeing 787,ATR 72 and TBM 900)and compared with the existing thermal and mechanical ice protection systems.A sensitivity analysis of the main key sizing parameters of the piezoelectric de-icing system is also performed to identify the main axes of improvement for this *** study shows the potential of such ice protection *** particular,for the realistic input parameters chosen in this work,the electro-mechanical solution can provide a 54% reduction in terms of mass and a 92% reduction in terms of power consumption for an A320 aircraft architecture,leading to a 74% decrease in the associated fuel consumption compared to the actual air bleed system.

We provide a concise review of the exponentially convergent multiscale finite element method(ExpMsFEM)for efficient model reduction of PDEs in heterogeneous media without scale separation and in high-frequency wave *** ExpMsFEM is built on the non-overlapped domain decomposition in the classical MsFEM while enriching the approximation space systematically to achieve a nearly exponential convergence rate regarding the number of basis *** most generalizations of the MsFEM in the literature,the ExpMsFEM does not rely on any partition of unity *** general,it is necessary to use function representations dependent on the right-hand side to break the algebraic Kolmogorov n-width barrier to achieve exponential ***,there are online and offline parts in the function representation provided by the *** online part depends on the right-hand side locally and can be computed in parallel *** offline part contains basis functions that are used in the Galerkin method to assemble the stiffness matrix;they are all independent of the right-hand side,so the stiffness matrix can be used repeatedly in multi-query scenarios.

How do neurons age?A focused review on the aging of the microtubular cytoskeleton

Aging is the leading risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. We now understand that a breakdown in the neuronal cytoskeleton, mainly underpinned by protein modifications leading to the destabilization of microtubules, is central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. This is accompanied by morphological defects across the somatodendritic compartment, axon, and synapse. However, knowledge of what occurs to the microtubule cytoskeleton and morphology of the neuron during physiological aging is comparatively poor. Several recent studies have suggested that there is an age-related increase in the phosphorylation of the key microtubule stabilizing protein tau, a modification, which is known to destabilize the cytoskeleton in Alzheimer’s disease. This indicates that the cytoskeleton and potentially other neuronal structures reliant on the cytoskeleton become functionally compromised during normal physiological aging. The current literature shows age-related reductions in synaptic spine density and shifts in synaptic spine conformation which might explain age-related synaptic functional deficits. However, knowledge of what occurs to the microtubular and actin cytoskeleton, with increasing age is extremely limited. When considering the somatodendritic compartment, a regression in dendrites and loss of dendritic length and volume is reported whilst a reduction in soma volume/size is often seen. However, research into cytoskeletal change is limited to a handful of studies demonstrating reductions in and mislocalizations of microtubule-associated proteins with just one study directly exploring the integrity of the microtubules. In the axon, an increase in axonal diameter and age-related appearance of swellings is reported but like the dendrites, just one study investigates the microtubules directly with others reporting loss or mislocalization of microtubule-associated proteins. Paraneoplastic retinopathies: an update on pathogenesis, diagnosis and management

The paraneoplastic retinopathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders with significant visual consequences occuring in the setting of a systemic *** conditions may be characterized by the presence of antiretinal antibodies and may predate or follow the diagnosis of an underlying *** I review the clinical findings,pathophysiology,laboratory testing and management of the paraneoplastic retinopathies:cancer-associated retinopathy(CAR),melanoma-associated retinopathy(MAR),bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation(BDUMP)and paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy(PVM).The pathophysiology of the paraneoplastic retinopathies varies from molecular mimicry resulting in anti-retinal antibody production(CAR,MAR)to relases of soluble factors either by the primary tumor(BDUMP)and/or immune system in response to the primary tumor(PVM)which result in retinal and/or retinal pigment epithelium *** each condition,structural and functional multimodal retinal testing can be helpful in establishing the *** for the paraneoplastic retinopathies involves a combination of treating the underlying malignancy plus additional local and/or systemic immunosuppressive agents though no systemic therapeutic protocols *** these interventions,the retinopathy may be progressive or the retinopathy may be a harbinger of poor ***,prompt diagnosis may help identify an underlying malignancy earlier and may thus improve cancer-related survival.
