BACKGrOUND Preoperative templating is essential in total hip arthroplasty(THA)as it not only helps to facilitate the correct implant type and size but also determines the postoperative *** is also increasingly important from a medicolegal perspective and recommended in the British Orthopaedic Association Guide to Good *** templating has become increasingly digitised,there are no simple anthropometric models to predict implant sizes in the absence of digital *** To assess the accuracy of using an easily obtainable measurement(shoe size)to predict component sizes in THA compared with digital *** Digital radiographs from a cohort of 102 patients(40 male,62 female)who had undergone uncemented or hybrid THA at a single centre were retrospectively templated to desired cup and stem sizes using TraumaCad■.We compared the templated size to the actual size of the implant and assessed if there was any correlation with the patient’s shoe *** Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between:shoe size and templated cup size(ρ=0.92,Pr cup sizes were positively correlated(ρ=0.76,Pre exact in 43.1%cases;80.4% of implanted cup sizes were within 1 size(+/-2 mm)of the template and 100% within 2 sizes(+/-4 mm).Positive correlation was also demonstrated between templated and implanted femoral stem sizes(ρ=0.69,Pre exact in 52.6% cases;92.6% were within 1 size of the template and 98% within 2 *** This study has shown there to be a significant positive correlation between shoe size and templated *** measurements are easily obtainable and can be used to predict uncemented component sizes in the absence of digital methods.

Inducible resistance to Fas-mediated apoptosis in B cells

Apoptosis produced in B cells through Fas (APO-1, CD95) triggering is regulated by signals derived from other surface receptors: CD40 engagement produces upregulation of Fas expres. sion and marked susceptibility to Fas-induced cell death, whereas antigen receptor engagement, or IL-4r engagement, inhibits Fas killing and in so doing induces a state of Fas-resistance, even in otherwise sensitive, CD40-stimulated targets. Surfaceim. munoglobulin and IL-4r utilize at least partially distinct pathways to produce Fas-resistance that differentially depend on PKC and STAT6, respectively. Further, surface immunoglob- "lin signaling for inducible Fas-resistance bypasses Bib, requires NF-GB, and entails new macromolecular synthesis. Terminal effectors of B cell Fas-resistance include the known anti-apoptotic gene products, Bcl-xL and FLIP, and a novel anti-apoptotic gene that encodes FAIM (Fas Apoptosis Inhibitory Molecule). faim was identified by differential display and exists in two alternatively spliced forms; maim-S is broadly expressed, but faim-L expression is tissue-specific. The FAIM sequence is highly evolu tionarily conserved, suggesting an important role for this molecule throughout phylogeny. Inducible resistance to Fas killing is hypothesized to protect foreign antigen-specific B cells during potentially hazardous interactions with FasL-bearing T cells, whereas autoreactive B cells fail to become Fas-resistant and are deleted via Fas-dependent cytotoxicity. Inadvertent or aberrant acquisition of Fas-resistance may permit autoreactive B cells to escape Fas deletion, and malignant lymphocytes to impede anti-tumor immunity.

Superior growth performance in broiler chicks fed chelated compared to inorganic zinc in presence of elevated dietary copper

Background： The goal of this study was to compare the antagonism of elevated dietary Cu （250 mg/kg） from CuS04 on three different Zn sources （ZnS04. H20; [Zn bis（-2-hydroxy-4-（methylthio）butanoic acid）], Zn（HMTBa）2 a chelated Zn methionine hydroxy analogue; and Zn-Methionine）, as measured using multiple indices of animal performance in rOSS 308 broilers. Methods： Three experiments were conducted in broiler chicks fed a semi-purified diet. All birds were fed a Zn-deficient diet （8.5 mg/kg diet） for 1 wk, and then provided with the experimental diets for 2 wks. results： Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial design with two levels of Cu （8 vs. 250 mg/kg diet from CuSO4） and two Zn sources at 30 mg/kg [ZnSO4. H20 vs. Zn（HMTBa）2]. Elevated Cu impaired growth performance only in birds fed ZnSO4. Compared to ZnSO4. H20, Zn（HMTBa）2 improved feed intake （12 %; P 〈 0.001） and weight gain （12 %, P 〈 0.001） and the benefits were more pronounced in the presence of 250 mg/kg diet Cu. Experiment 2 was a dose titration of ZnSO4- H20 and Zn（HMTBa）2 at 30, 4,5, 60, and 75 mg/kg diet in the presence of 250 mg/kg CuSO4. Feed：gain was decreased and tibia Zn was increased with increasing Zn levels from 30 to 75 mg/kg. Birds fed Zn（HMTBa）2 consumed more food and gained more weight compared to birds fed ZnSO4, especially at lower supplementation levels （30 and 45 mg/kg; interaction P 〈 0,05）. Experiment 3 compared two organic Zn sources （Zn（HMTBa）2 vs. Zn-Methionine） at 30 mg/kg with or without 250 mg/kg CuSO4. No interactions were observed between Zn sources and Cu levels on performance or tissue mineral concentrations. High dietary Cu decreased weight gain （P 〈 0.01）. Tibia Cu and liver Cu were significantly increased with 250 mg/kg dietary Cu supplementation （P 〈 0.01）. No difference was observed between the two Zn sources. Conclusions： Dietary 250 mg/kg Cu significantly impaired feed intake and weight gain in birds fed ZnSO4. H20, but had less impact in birds fed Zn（HMTBa）2. No difference

AIM： To evaluate the feasibility and utility of confocal laser endomicroscopy （CLE） in the description of normal gastrointestinal （GI） mucosa and in the diagnosis of GI disorders in children, in comparison to ***： Forty-four patients （19 female） median age 10.9 years （range 0.7-16.6 years） with suspected or known GI pathology underwent esophago-gastro- duodenoscopy （OGD）（n = 36） and/or ileocolonoscopy （IC）（n = 31） with CLE using sodium fluorescein and acriflavine as contrast agents. Histological sections were compared with same site confocal images by two experienced pediatric and GI histopathologists and endoscopists, ***： Duodenum and ileum were intubated in all but one patient undergoing OGD and IC. The median procedure time was 16.4 min （range 7-25 rain） for OGD and 27.9 min （range 15-45 min） for IC. A total of 4798 confocal images were compared with 153 biopsies from the upper GI tract from 36 procedures, and 4661 confocal images were compared with 188 biopsies from the ileocolon from 31 *** images were comparable to conventional histology both in normal and in pathological conditions such as esophagitis, Helicobacter pylori gastritis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic heterotopia, and graft versus host ***： CLE offers the prospect of targeting biopsies to abnormal mucosa, thereby increasing diagnostic yield, reducing the number of biopsies, decreasing the burden on the histopathological services, and reducing costs.

Granular titanite from the roter Kamm crater in Namibia:Product of regional metamorphism,not meteorite impact

Accessory minerals with so-called granular texture have risen in importance as geochronological tools for U-Pb dating of meteorite impact events. Grain-scale recrystallization, typically triggered by a combination of high-strain deformation and post-impact heating, can create a polycrystalline microstructure consisting of neoblasts that expel radiogenic Pb, which are thus ideal for isotopic dating. While granular domains in zircon and monazite from shocked rocks have been demonstrated to preserve impact ages,few U-Pb dating studies have been conducted on granular microstructures in titanite(CaTiSiO;). Here we report the occurrence of granular-textured titanite from ~2020 Ma granite basement rock exposed in the rim of the 4–5 Ma roter Kamm impact structure in Namibia. Orientation mapping reveals two microstructurally distinct titanite populations: one consisting of strained/deformed grains, and the other consisting of grains that comprise aggregates of strain-free neoblasts. In situ U-Pb geochronology on 37 grains shows that most grains from both titanite populations yield indistinguishable U-Pb dates of ca.1025 Ma, consistent with the observed microstructures forming during the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Orogeny. Only four grains preserved older age domains, recording ca. 1875 Ma Paleoproterozoic metamorphism. Two significant observations emerge:(1) none of the analyzed titanite grains yield the 2020 Ma igneous crystallization age previously established from zircon in the same sample, and(2) no age-resetting was detected that could be attributed to the 4 to 5 Ma roter Kamm impact *** the similarity of the neoblastic microstructure to minerals from other sites with an established impact provenance, the granular texture and near-complete Pb-loss in titanite from roter Kamm granite instead records a Paleo-to Mesoproterozoic polymetamorphic history, rather than Miocene age shockrelated processes. ＜正＞ Kinin B2 antagonists prevent edema in acute pancreatitis but also cause hemor-rhagic lesions. We investigated whether this is due to reduced influx of endogenous protease inhibitors and increased tissue kallikrein activity. Pancreatitis was induced in anesthetized rats by i. v. infusion of cerulein. rats were pretreated with the B2 antagonist icatibant and/or selective inhibitors of tissue kallikrein （TKI） and plasma kallikrein （PKI） [evans et al.. 1996]. The pancreatic tissue was analyzed for hemoglobin. Icatibant inhibited edema formation but caused apronounced increase in tissue hemoglobin. Although TKI also in- hibited edema, vascular damage was *** caused by icatibant was largely attenuated by combined TKI and PKI. Influx of endogenous protease inhibitors was significantly reduced by icatibant and TKI. Tissue kalli krein activity was increased 10-100 fold by icatibant. but was inhibited by TKI. We conclude that increased levels of active kallikrein in the pancreas cause hemorrhagic lesions when edema is absent. Inhibition of kallikreins thus could be a promising strategy for the prevention of hemorrhagic lesions in acute pancreatitis.

Magnetism in recently discovered van der Waals materials has opened several avenues in the study of fundamental spin interactions in truly two-dimensions.A paramount question is what effect higher-order interactions beyond bilinear Heisenberg exchange have on the magnetic properties of few-atom thick *** we demonstrate that biquadratic exchange interactions,which is the simplest and most natural form of non-Heisenberg coupling,assume a key role in the magnetic properties of layered *** a combination of nonperturbative analytical techniques,non-collinear first-principles methods and classical Monte Carlo calculations that incorporate higher-order exchange,we show that several quantities including magnetic anisotropies,spin-wave gaps and topological spin-excitations are intrinsically renormalized leading to further thermal stability of the layers.
