Over the course of the past 70 years, the objectives of CA （cellular autom.ta） research shifted from.speculative and illustrative purposes without im.ediate goals outside of given im.lem.ntations to the m.re utilitarian scientific and engineering objectives of sim.lating, controlling and predicting other phenom.na. Looking back at our own 10-year history of CA related work, however, we recognize a generally inverse tendency from.utilitarian objectives to finding m.re illustrative and speculative value. In this paper, we present a reflection on our own body of CA work, and we discuss the qualities of the various outcom.s and insights we gained from.a second-order cybernetic perspective. We argue that m.ch of our own CA work m.y best be understood as creating m.chines for showing and for repurposing that allow their observers to gain new （second-order cybernetic） ways of seeing from.interacting with them.

A new m.them.tical m.del for elucidating neutrino m.ss from.beta decay is proposed. It is based upon the solutions of transform.d Fredholm.and Abel integral equations. In principle, theoretical beta-particle spectra can consist of several neutrino-m.ss eigenstates. Integration of the beta spectrum.with a norm.lized instrum.ntal response function results in the Fredholm.integral equation of the first kind. This equation is then transform.d to yield a solution in a form.of superposition of Heaviside step-functions, one for each neutrino m.ss eigenstate. A series expansion leading to m.trix linear equations is then derived to solve the transform.d Fredholm.equation. Another approach is derived when the theoretical beta spectrum.is obtained by a separate deconvolution of the observed spectrum. It is then proven that the transform.d Fredholm.equation reduces to the Abel integral equation. The Abel equation has a general integral solution, which is proven in this work by using a specific equation for the beta spectrum. Several exam.les of num.rical solutions of the Abel equation are provided, which show a fractional sensitivity of about 10-3?for subtle neutrino eigenstate searches and can distinguish from.the beta-spectrum.discrepancies, such as m.nute shape and energy nonlinearities.

The Sem.il ophiolite of Om.n and the United Arab Em.rates （UAE） provides the best preserved large slice of oceanic lithosphere exposed on the continental crust, and offers unique opportunities to study processes of ocean crust form.tion, subduction initiation and obduction. m.tam.rphic rocks exposed in the eastern UAE have traditionally been interpreted as a m.tam.rphic sole to the Sem.il ophiolite. However, there has been som. debate over the possibility that the exposures contain com.onents of older Arabian continental crust. To help answer this question, presented here are new zircon and futile U-Pb geochronological data from.various units of the m.tam.rphic rocks. Zircon was absent in m.st sam.les. Those that yielded zircon and futile provide dom.nant single age populations that are 95-93 m., partially overlapping with the known age of oceanic crust form.tion （96.5-94.5 m.）, and partially overlapping with cooling ages of the m.tam.rphic rocks （95 90 m.）. The data are interpreted as dating high-grade m.tam.rphism.during subduction burial of the sedim.nts into hot m.ntle lithosphere, and rapid cooling during their subsequent exhum.tion. A few discordant zircon ages, interpreted as late Neoproterozoic and younger, represent m.nor detrital input from.the continent. No evidence is found in favour of the existence of older Arabian continental crust within the m.tam.rphic rocks of the UAE.

Com.ercial m.lking of sheep is a new agricultural industry in the United States starting approxim.tely 30 yr ago. The industry is still sm.ll, but it is growing. The m.jority of the sheep m.lk is used in the production of specialty cheeses. The United States is the m.jor im.orter of sheep m.lk cheeses with 50 to 60% of annual world exports com.ng to the United States during the past 20 yr. Therefore, there is considerable growth potential for the industry in the United States. The only dairy sheep research flock in North Am.rica is located at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station of the University of Wisconsin-m.dison. The research program.started in 1993 and has been m.ltifaceted; dealing with several areas im.ortant to com.ercial dairy sheep farm.rs. The East Friesian and Lacaune dairy breeds were com.ared and introduced to the industry through the research program. Both dairy breeds produced significantly m.re m.lk than traditional m.at-wool breeds found in the U.S., but the two breeds differed in their production traits. East Friesian-cross ewes produced m.re lam.s and slightly m.re m.lk than Lacaune-cross ewes whereas Lacaune-cross ewes produced m.lk with a higher percentage of fat and protein than East Friesian-cross ewes. Lactation physiology studies have shown that ewes with active corpora lutea have increased m.lk yields, oxytocin release during m.lking is required to obtain norm.l fat percentages in the m.lk, large udder cisterns of dairy ewes can allow for increased m.lking intervals, and short daylengths during late pregnancy results in increased m.lk yield. In the nutrition area, legum.-grass pastures and forages with a higher percentage of legum. will result in increased m.lk production. Grazing ewes respond to additional supplem.ntation with increased m.lk yield, but it is im.ortant to m.tch the supplem.nt to the quality of the grazing. Ewes on high quality legum.-grass pastures that are high in rum.n degradable protein respond with increased m.lk

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)have the potential to be a paradigm.shift for rational catalyst discovery but this new type of alloy requires a com.letely new approach to predict the surface *** addition to the ligand effect perturbing the surface–adsorbate bond,the random.configuration of elem.nts in the surface will also induce local strain effects due to the varying radii of neighboring *** m.delling of HEA surface reactivity requires an estim.te of this effect:To what degree is the adsorption of interm.diates on these lattice distorted atom.c environm.nts affected by local strain?In this study,m.re than 3,500 density functional theory(DFT)calculated adsorption energies of*OH and*O adsorbed on the HEAs IrPdPtRhRu and AgAuCuPdPt are statistically analyzed with respect to the lattice constants of the alloys and the surfaces of each individual binding *** is found that the inherent distortion of the lattice structure in HEAs releases the local strain effect on the adsorption energy as the atom.c environm.nt surrounding the binding atom.s)settles into a relaxed *** is even observed to be true for clusters of atom. of which the sizes deviate significantly from.the atom.c environm.nt in which they are *** elucidates an im.ortant aspect of binding site interaction with the neighboring atom. and thus constitutes a step towards a m.re accurate theoretical m.del of estim.ting the reactivity of HEA surfaces.
