Geochronological constraints on the metamorphic sole of the Semail ophiolite in the United Arab Emirates

The Semail ophiolite of Oman and the United Arab Emirates （UAE） provides the best preserved large slice of oceanic lithosphere exposed on the continental crust, and offers unique opportunities to study processes of ocean crust formation, subduction initiation and obduction. Metamorphic rocks exposed in the eastern UAE have traditionally been interpreted as a metamorphic sole to the Semail ophiolite. However, there has been some debate over the possibility that the exposures contain components of older Arabian continental crust. To help answer this question, presented here are new zircon and futile U-Pb geochronological data from various units of the metamorphic rocks. Zircon was absent in most samples. Those that yielded zircon and futile provide dominant single age populations that are 95-93 Ma, partially overlapping with the known age of oceanic crust formation （96.5-94.5 Ma）, and partially overlapping with cooling ages of the metamorphic rocks （95 90 Ma）. The data are interpreted as dating high-grade metamorphism during subduction burial of the sediments into hot mantle lithosphere, and rapid cooling during their subsequent exhumation. A few discordant zircon ages, interpreted as late Neoproterozoic and younger, represent minor detrital input from the continent. No evidence is found in favour of the existence of older Arabian continental crust within the metamorphic rocks of the UAE.

Timely removal of oxidatively damaged proteins is crit- ical for cells exposed to oxidative stresses; however, cellular mechanism for clearing oxidized proteins is not clear. Our study reveals a novel type of protein modifi- cation that may play a role in targeting oxidized proteins and remove them. In this process, DSS1 （deleted in split hand/split foot 1）, an evolutionally conserved small protein, is conj.gated to proteins induced by oxidative stresses in vitro and in vivo, implying oxidized proteins are DSS1 clients. A subsequent ubiquitination targeting DSSl-protein adducts has been observed, suggesting the client proteins are degraded through the ubiquitin- proteasome pathway. The DSS1 attachment to its clients is evidenced to be an enzymatic process modulated by an unidentified ATPase. We name this novel protein modification as DSSylation, in which DSS1 plays as amodifier, whose attachment may render target proteins a signature leading to their subsequent ubiquitination, thereby recruits proteasome to degrade them.

This study compared the efficacy of 70- and 120-w 2-μm thulium：YAG VapoEnucleation of the prostate （ThuVEP） for patients with benign prostatic obstruction （BPO）. A prospective analysis of 84 patients with symptomatic BPO and prostatic enlargement （t〉 60 ml） who underwent either 70-w （n=44） or 120-w ThuVEP （n=40） non-randomly was carried out. Patient demographics and perioperative and 12-month follow-up data were analysed. The mean prostate volume was 79.90---27.49 ml in patients who had received 70-w ThuVEP, which was less than in those who had received 120-w ThuVEP （88.53＋-25.10; P=0.033）. The mean enucleation （resected weight/laser time, 2.16±1.21 g min-1 vs. 1.23±0.60 g min-1; P=-0.013）, operation efficiency （resected weight/total operation time, 0.76±0.35 g min-1 vs. 0.42＋-0.27 g min-1; P=-0.000） and percentage of resected tissue （66.93%±22.79% vs. 45.41%±23.33%; P=-0.000） were higher with 120-w treatment compared to 70-w ThuVEP. One patient （1.2% of total patients）（in the 120-w group） required a blood transfusion postoperatively. Sixty-one patients （73%） were available for review at the 12-month follow-up time point. The quality of life （QoL）, International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS）, maximum urinary flow rate （Qmax）, postvoiding residual urine （PVR） and prostate volume improved significantly after treatment （P≤ 0.035） and were not significantly different between those treated with the different devices （70- and 120-w）. The median prostate volume reduction was 81.70% and 82.19% with 70- and 120-w ThuVEP, respectively. The incidence of complications was low and did not differ between groups treated with the different devices. Two patients （2.4%）（one per group） had a bladder neck contracture at the follow-up. ThuVEP is a safe and efficacious procedure for the treatment of symptomatic BPO. The incidence of complications was low with both devices. The 120-w thulium：YAG device enhances the effectiveness of Th,VEP with reeard to the oercentaee of resected tissue

In this paper, the crystallization behaviour of amorphous Cu56Zr7Ti37 alloy using thermal electrical resistivity （TER） and differential scanning calorimetry （DSC） studies has been described. Isochronal TER and DSC measurements indicate that crystallization occurs in two stages. Isothermal crystallization studies of the alloy by TER show that the kinetics conforms to j.hnson-Mehl-Avrami model. Avrami exponents derived from kinetics, between 1.1 and 1.2, imply that the crystallization processes are diffusion controlled with near zero nucleation. Activation energy has been found to increase with the transformed volume fraction. A plausible explanation has been presented by separating the contributions due to nucleation and crystal growth towards total activation energy.

Contemporary system maturity assessment approaches have failed to provide robust quantitative system evaluations resulting in increased program costs and developmental *** assessment metrics,such as Technology Readiness Levels（TRL）,do not sufficiently evaluate increasingly complex *** System Readiness Level（SRL）is a newly developed system development metric that is a mathematical function of TRL and Integration Readiness Level（IRL） values for the components and connections of a particular *** acceptance has been hindered because of concerns over SRL mathematical operations that may lead to inaccurate system readiness *** inaccurate system readiness assessments are called readiness reversals.A new SRL calculation method using incidence matrices is proposed to alleviate these mathematical *** presence of SRL readiness reversal is modeled for four SRL calculation methods across several system *** regression analysis demonstrates that the proposed Incidence Matrix SRL（IMSRL）method has a decreased presence of readiness reversal than other approaches suggested in the *** SRL methods will foster greater SRL adoption by systems engineering professionals and will support system development risk reduction goals.

The nuclear envelope is increasingly viewed from an electrophysiological perspective by researchers interested in signal transduction pathways that influence gene transcription and other processes in the nucleus. Here, we describe evidence for ion channels and transporters in the nuclear membranes and for possible ion gating by the nuclear pores. We argue that a systems-level understanding of cellular regulation is likely to require the assimilation of nuclear electrophysiology into molecular and biochemical signaling pathways.

Background： Porcine adipose tissue expresses orosomucoid（ORM1） mRNA, a protein with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Previous research has demonstrated that porcine ORM1 can reduce insulin stimulated glucose metabolism in porcine adipose tissue in vitro. The present study was designed to examine the preweaning ontogeny of ORM1 m RNA abundance in porcine subcutaneous adipose and to determine if ORM1 can regulate m RNA abundance of inflammatory cytokines that contribute to insulin resistance in primary cultures derived from neonatal porcine subcutaneous adipose tissue. Cultures were differentiated in vitro and subsequently the adipocyte containing cultures were incubated for 24 h with 0–5000 ng porcine ORM1/m L medium. Cultures were then harvested, total RNA extracted for use in reverse transcription and the m RNA abundance of cytokine m RNA quantified by real-time ***： ORM1 m RNA abundance within neonatal adipose tissue does not change from d 1 to d 21 of age and is a very small fraction relative to liver m RNA abundance. The ORM1 m RNA level in porcine adipocytes and stromalvascular cells are similar（P 〉 0.05）. Treatment with ORM1 did not affect TNFα（tumor necrosis factor α） m RNA level（P 〉 0.05）, while interleukin 6（IL6） m RNA abundance was reduced 32 % at 1,000 ng ORM1/m L（P 〈 0.01）. However,TNFα protein content in the cell culture media was reduced by ORM1 treatment（5,000 ng/m L, P 〈 0.05）, whereas ORM1 had no detectable effect on the media content of IL6（P 〉 0.05）. The reduction of macrophage migration inhibitory factor（MIF） m RNA abundance by ORM1 was dose dependent（P 〈 0.01）. Monocyte chemotactic protein（MCP） m RNA level was reduced 27 % by 1,000 ng ORM1/m L（P 〈 0.05）.Conclusions： The data suggest that ORM1 has limited effects TNFα, IL6, MIF or MCP expression at the concentrations tested. Dear Editor Sequence-specific nucleases, including zinc-finger nucleases, meganucleases, TAL effector nucleases （TALENs）, and CRISPR/ Cas systems, have been used to introduce targeted mutations in a wide range of plant species （Voytas, 2013; Baltes and Voytas, 2015）. However, delivery of these nucleases using traditional transformation methods （e.g., particle bombardment, Agrobacterium or protoplast transformation） may result in undesired genetic alterations due to random insertion of nucleaseencoding DNA into the host genome. Random integration of DNA is a particular concern for trait improvement and gene function studies, because it may lead to unintended gene inactivation or it may alter expression of host genes. Furthermore, for crop varieties created using biotechnology, the presence of foreign DNA is a trigger for regulation by many governmental agencies （Voytas and Gao, 2014）. Therefore, methods to modify plant genomes that do not require DNA delivery would have value in both commercial and academic settings. Here we demonstrate nontransgenic plant genome engineering by introducing sequencespecific nucleases as purified protein. This approach enabled targeted mutagenesis of endogenous sequences within plant cells, while avoiding integration of foreign DNA into the genome.
