Ci.arette s.oki.g i. a major ri.k factor for bladder cancer (BC). s.lfotrans.eras. 1A1 (s.LT1A1), a phas. i. enzyme, plays.an i.portant role i. the metaboli.m of s.veral carci.ogens.contai.ed i. ci.arettes. The ai. of thi. s.udy was.to i.ves.i.ate the relati.ns.i. between s.LT1A1 G638A polymorphi.m, ci.arette s.oki.g and bladder cancer ri.k i. Tai.an. A total of 150 BC pati.nts.and 150 cancer-free controls.were recrui.ed from February 2002 to February 2009. Genotypi.g of the s.LT1A1 G638A polymerphi.m was.determi.ed us.0}g the polymeras. chai. reacti.n-res.ri.ted fragment length polymorphi.m (PCR- RFLP) method. The odds.rati. (OR) and 95% confi.ence i.terval (Ci. were calculated as.a meas.re of the combi.ed effect of ci.arette s.oki.g and the s.LT1A1 G638A polymorphi.m on BC ri.k. i. the pres.nt s.udy, we found that s.udy s.bjects.wi.h the G/G genotype of the s.LT1A1 gene had a s.0}ni.i.antly hi.her BC ri.k of 1.7 (95% Ci.= 1.3 - 3.2) compared wi.h thos. carryi.g the combi.ati.n of G/A and A/A genotypes. Moreover, ever s.okers.who carri.d the G/G genotype of the s.LT1A1 gene had a s.0}ni.i.antly i.creas.d UC ri.k of 3.5 (95% Ci.= 2.5 - 10.2) compared wi.h never s.okers.who carri.d the G/A and A/A genotypes.as.the reference group. i. conclus.0}n, our fi.di.gs.s.gges. that s.LT1A1 G638A polymorphi.m i. as.oci.ted wi.h the development of BC, es.eci.lly among ci.arette s.okers.
