Biochars produced from coconut palm biomass residues can aid regenerative agriculture by improving soil properties and plant yield in humid tropics

Lignin-rich recalcitrant biomass residues of coconut palms viz.(i)mature coconut husk,(ii)tender(immature or green)coconut husk(iii)coconut leaf petiole and(iv)coir-pith were successfully pyrolysed using a simple charring kiln into carbon-rich,black,light weight and porous *** alkalinity and good ash content made them fit for remediating acid *** potassium content in these biochars could help reduce the use of inorganic *** analysis showed the mass loss phases of husk and coconut leaf petiole biochars to be ***,all four biochars gave smooth curves indicating thermal stability of the *** seed germination and earthworm avoidance tests proved their potential as soil *** incubation studies with coconut biochars in graded doses,alone or in combination with coconut leaf vermicompost,increased the ph,organic carbon and potassium contents,and promoted plant-beneficial microbiota and enzyme *** studies with tender coconut husk biochar and coconut leaf vermicompost enhanced the dry weight of cowpea plants accompanied with increased arbuscular mycorrhizal sporulation and root colonization,and root nodule dry weight.A field trial resulted in higher chilli yields with tender coconut husk biochar+coconut leaf vermicompost *** results from our studies highlight the potential of pyrolysis as an innovative technology for quick recycling of highly recalcitrant coconut palm biomass residues to biochars as a local source of soil amendment to aid regenerative agriculture in humid tropics.

Surface-Induced Dissociation of Low Energy h_2^(+) Impact on a Carbon Surface: A Monte Carlo Simulation

A Monte Carlo simulation based on the classical binary collision approximation is performed to investigate the interaction of W2 ions with the carbon target. The incident h2^＋ ion is characterized by its translational energy, eigenenergy and population of the vibrational state, and orientation of the ion with respect to the target surface. It is shown that experimentally determined energy resolved mass spectrum of h＋ can be nicely reproduced with the help of the proposed model. These simulations predict that translational to vibrational （T → V） energy transfer efficiency increases nonlinearly with translational energy of the incident ion. T → V energy transfer efficiency along with the initial vibrational energy of the incident h＋ ion found to play an important role in dissociation. Our simulations also show that the fraction of absorbed, reflected, and dissociated ions depends on the translational energy. The average vibrational energy of reflected h＋ increases with its initial translational energy. Moreover, average number of collisions required for dissociation varies inversely with the initial translational energy of the h2^＋.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF LIGhT-FRAME AND TIMBER FRAME STRUCTURES

The objective of this study was to analyze the environmental performance of different wood structural assemblies for residential *** structural systems(a traditional timber frame and a light-frame)were compared together with alternate material options for each *** impacts were determined using the Athena Impact Estimator for Buildings *** alterations for generalization were made to an existing timber frame(TF)structure used as the basis of this analysis,and an equivalent light-frame(LF)structure was designed based on the International Residential Code(IRC).Environmental impacts observed include total energy consumption,fossil fuel consumption,global warming potential(GWP),and wood fiber *** analyses were considered cradle-to-gate,including the manufacturing and construction life-cycle *** show how GWP is linked to both fossil fuel consumption and wood fiber use,and how ultimate environmental impact is driven by energy *** impacts of structures are driven by material choice,and levels of carbon stored in structural wood serve to decrease *** the structural assemblies analyzed,the most traditional TF structure outperformed all other options in almost every measure.

BACKGROUND Patients with myasthenia gravis(MG)are at a higher risk of developing Takotsubo cardiomyopathy(TTC),particularly during a myasthenic *** crisis-associated TTC occurs predominantly in *** this case report,we present a man with metastasized prostate carcinoma who developed TTC after new-onset *** SUMMARY An 81-year-old man with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and metastasized prostate carcinoma presented with *** primary assessment examination at the emergency department,there was evident blepharoptosis of his right *** electrocardiograms were suggestive of an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction,for which he underwent emergency coronary *** obstructive coronary artery disease was *** the coronary angiography,the patient developed respiratory failure and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for non-invasive respiratory *** following day,diagnostic neostigmine test revealed a myasthenic *** echocardiography revealed left ventricular apical ballooning with a typical appearance of *** the potentially reversible character of both MG and TTC,the patient and family requested an end of support in the Intensive Care Unit due to age and chronic malignancy with reduced quality of life in recent months after non-chemo-responding prostate *** patient died soon after treatment *** Elderly men should be carefully evaluated for TTC when new-onset MG is diagnosed.

Inhibition of P-glycoprotein by two artemisinin derivatives

P-Glycoprotein/MDR1 represents an important component of the blood brain barrier and contributes to multidrug *** investigated two derivatives of the anti-malarial artemisinin,SM616 and GhP-AJM-3/23,concerning their ability to interact with *** ability of the two compounds to inhibit P-glycoprotein(P-gp)activity was examined in sensitive CCRF-CEM and P-gp over-expressing and multidrug-resistant CEM/ADR5000 cells as well as in porcine brain capillary endothelial cells(PBCEC)by means of calcein-AM *** as well-known P-gp inhibitor was used as control ***/ADR5000 cells exhibited cross-resistance to GhP-AJM-3/23,but slight collateral sensitivity to ***,SM616 inhibited calcein efflux both in CEM/ADR5000 and PBCEC,whereas GhP-AJM-3/23 did only increase calcein fluorescence in PBCEC,but not CEM/*** may be explained by the fact that CEM/ADR5000 only express P-gp but not other ATP-binding cassette transporters,whereas PBCEC are known to express several ABC transporters and calcein is transported by more than one ABC ***,SM616 may be the more specific P-gp *** conclusion,the collateral sensitivity of SM616 as well as the inhibition of calcein efflux in both CEM/ADR5000 cells and PBCEC indicate that this compound may be a promising P-gp inhibitor to treat cancer therapy and to overcome the blood brain barrier.

Targeted heat treatment of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V for controlled formation of Bi-lamellar microstructures

Laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF)was utilized to produce specimens in Ti-6Al-4V,which were subjected to a bi-lamellar heat treatment,which produces microstructures consisting of primary α-lamellae and a fine secondary α-phase inside the inter-lamellar β-*** bi-lamellar microstructure was obtained as(i)a direct bi-lamellar heat treatment from the asbuilt condition or(ii)a bi-lamellar heat treatment preceded by a β-*** the bi-lamellar treatment with β-homogenization,cooling rates in the range 1-500 K/min were applied after homogenization in β-region followed by inter-critical annealing in the α+β region at various temperatures in the range 850-950℃.The microstructures were characterized using various microscopical *** testing with Vickers hardness indentation and tensile testing was *** bi-lamellar microstructure was harder when compared to a soft fully lamellar microstructure,because of the presence of fine α-platelets inside the β-*** low temperature ageing provided an additional hardness increase by precipitation hardening of the primary α-*** age hardened bi-lamellar microstructure shows a similar hardness as the very fine,as-built martensitic *** bi-lamellar microstructure has more favorable mechanical properties than the as-built condition,which has high strength,but poor *** the bi-lamellar heat treatment,the elongation was improved by more than 250%.Due to the very high strength of the as-built condition,loss of tensile strength is unavoidable,resulting in a reduction of tensile strength of~18%.

Calcium phosphates(CaP)represent an important class of osteoconductive and osteoinductive *** proof-of-concept,we show how a multi-component CaP formulation(monetite,beta-tricalcium phosphate,and calcium pyrophosphate)guides osteogenesis beyond the physiological *** a sheep model,hollow dome-shaped constructs were placed directly over the occipital *** 12 months,large amounts of bone(~75%)occupy the hollow space with strong evidence of ongoing *** of both compact bone(osteonal/osteon-like arrangements)and spongy bone(trabeculae separated by marrow cavities)reveal insights into function/need-driven microstructural *** within the CaP also contain both woven bone and vascularised lamellar *** actively contribute to CaP degradation/*** the constituent phases,only calcium pyrophosphate persists within osseous(cutting cones)and non-osseous(macrophages)*** a translational perspective,this multi-component CaP opens up exciting new avenues for osteotomy-free and minimally-invasive repair of large bone defects and augmentation of the dental alveolar ridge.
