In the Peninsular Malaysia and Northern Borneo island of Malaysia, various rich indigenous leafy vegetables and fruits grow and contribute to the nutritional and dietary values of the population. They have high water contents, thus, naturally vulnerable to rapid food spoilage. Food preservation and processing play a vital role in the inhibition of food pathogens in fruits and vegetables that are prevalent in Malaysia. Lactic acid fermentation is generally a local-based bioprocess, among the oldest form and well-known for food-processing techniques among indigenous people there. The long shelf life of fermented vegetables and fruits improves their nutritional values and antioxidant potentials. Fermented leaves and vegetables can be utilized as a potential source of probiotics as they are host for several lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus confusus, Weissella paramesenteroides, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus pentosus, Pediococcus acidilactici, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. These strains may be more viable in metabolic systems whereby they can contribute to a substantial increase in essential biologically active element than industrial starter cultures. This review is aimed to address some essential fermented fruits and vegetables in Malaysia and their remarkable reputations as a potential sources of natural probiotics.

Raman scattering provides a convenient mechanism to generate or amplify light at wavelengths where gain is not otherwise *** combined with recent advancements in high-power fiber lasers that operate at wavelengths~2μm,great opportunities exist for Raman systems that extend operation further into the mid-infrared regime for applications such as gas sensing,spectroscopy,and biomedical ***,a thulium-doped fiber laser is used to demonstrate Raman emission and amplification from a highly nonlinear silicon core fiber(ScF)platform at wavelengths beyond 2μ*** ScF has been tapered to obtain a micrometer-sized core diameter(~1.6μm)over a length of 6 cm,with losses as low as 0.2 dB cm^(−1).A maximum on-off peak gain of 30.4 dB was obtained using 10 W of peak pump power at 1.99μm,with simulations indicating that the gain could be increased to up to~50 dB by extending the ScF *** also show that by exploiting the large Raman gain and extended mid-infrared transparency of the ScF,cascaded Raman processes could yield tunable systems with practical output powers across the 2–5μm range.

Pseudolymphoma (reactive lymphoid hyperplasia) of the liver:A clinical challenge

Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia(RLH), also known as pseudolymphoma or nodular lymphoid lesion of the liver is an extremely rare condition, and only 51 hepatic RLH cases have been described in the literature since the first case was described in 1981. The majority of these cases were asymptomatic and incidentally found through radiological imaging. The precise etiology of hepatic RLH is still unknown, but relative high prevalence of autoimmune disorder in these cases suggests an immune-based liver disorder. Imaging features of hepatic RLH often suggest malignant lesions such as hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. In this report, we discuss two cases of hepatic RLH in patients with autoimmune hepatitis. We also present pathologic and magnetic resonance imaging findings, including one case utilizing a hepatocellular contrast agent, Eovist. Definitive diagnosis of hepatic RLH often requires surgical excision.

Metal clusters are useful phosphors, but highly luminescent examples are quite rare. Usually, the phosphorescence of metal clusters is hindered by ambient O2molecules. Transforming this disadvantage into an advantage for meaningful applications of metal clusters presents a formidable challenge. In this work, we used ligand engineering to judiciously prepare colour-tuneable and brightly emitting cu（I）clusters that are ultrasensitive to O2upon dispersion in a fluid solution or in a solid matrix. When the O2scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide（DMSO） was used as the solvent, joint photo-and oxygen-controlled multicolour switches were achieved for the first time for metal cluster-based photopatterning and photo-anticounterfeiting. More importantly, an aggregation-induced barrier to oxygen, a new aggregation-induced emission mechanism for metal clusters, was proposed, providing a new pathway to realizing the intense emission of metal clusters in the aggregated state. These results are expected to promote the application of metal clusters and enrich the luminescence theory of metal cluster aggregates.

电泳光散射法测量Zeta电位时,散射光频移只有几百赫兹,在全频段求取散射光功率谱会降低频率分辨率。为此,提出先用傅里叶变换在全频段对散射光信号进行频谱估计,获取需要细化分析的频谱范围,然后用线性调频变换频谱细化算法在窄带范围内进行高分辨率的频谱细化分析,从而获得准确的散射光频移。设计了基于激光多普勒技术的散射光频移测量装置,使用该方法分别测量了3种标准聚苯乙烯乳胶微球的Zeta电位。实验结果表明,线性调频变换频谱细化算法可以有效地提高Zeta电位的测量精度,测量重复性小于5%。

采用多角度动态光散射和加权正则化反演方法,对4组模拟的双峰分布颗粒体系(100/600nm,200/600nm,300/600nm和350/600nm)分别选取1、3、6和10个散射角进行测量.粒度反演结果表明,采用加权正则化方法反演双峰颗粒体系的多角度动态光散射测量数据,可获得峰值位置比小于2∶1且含有大粒径(>350nm)颗粒的双峰颗粒粒度分布.采用标准聚苯乙烯乳胶颗粒进行实测的结果验证了这一结论.得到含大粒径颗粒的双峰粒度分布反演结果的原因在于,多角度动态光散射能提供更多的大粒径颗粒的粒度信息,加权正则化反演方法能减少测量数据中的噪声,因而多角度动态光散射测量数据的加权反演能实现峰值位置比小于2∶1且含有大粒径颗粒的双峰颗粒体系的测量.

Syntaxin-1是特异性地分布在神经细胞突触前质膜上的蛋白。它早期被作为分子量为35 kD的synaptotagmin-1结合蛋白,但很快就被认识到是细胞质膜融合的关键蛋白。Syntaxin-1通过与SNAP25和Synaptobrevin/VAMP蛋白聚合,进而形成被认为是神经突触囊泡融合必要因子的SNARE核心复合体。作为一个多结构域的蛋白,syntaxin-1与多个突触蛋白相互作用,其作用远超出了仅作为SNARE核心复合体中一个蛋白质成员的作用。本文着重介绍了有关syntaxin-1与其它SNARE组份蛋白、munc18蛋白和钙离子通道的相互作用及其功能的最新研究进展。全面揭示syntaxin-1作为SNARE核心复合体成员的功能以及超越这一功能的作用,还有待于对其结构以及与其它突触蛋白相互作用特性的进一步深刻理解。
