Finite element analysis of overlay incorporating stress absorbing membrane interlayers against reflective cracking

A wheel tracking test was modelled to gain better understanding of the deflection and stress-strain distribution in an overlaid cracked pavements with and without membrane interlayer （sAmI）. For this purpose, commercial finite element software Abaqus 6.7-1 was used. Two different models were considered, one incorporating stress absorbing membrane interlayers （sAmIs） and the other without sAmI. In the study, full bond condition was assumed for the boundaries between the layers, and a linear elastic model was used for the analysis. The results show that introduction of sAmI caused greater deflection of the pavement. It is found that although with sAmIs, low stiffness is required, a very low stiffness may yield undesirable results. The results show that the introduction of sAmIs results in high strain concentration around the crack region, whilst the strain in the overlay is smaller than the values predicted in the models without sAmIs.

The legalization of cannabinoids for medical use has reinforced their emerging role as a treatment of chronic pain in patients with cancer or rheumatic diseases.1,2 In addition to their role as pain relievers,evidence obtained from animal models suggests that cannabinoids have immunosuppressive properties.3 However,a definite immunosuppressive function of cannabinoids has not yet been confirmed in clinical trials.

several methods have been developed in the literature which allow the maturity of composts to be assessed before it is used in agriculture. The objective of this study is to assess the maturity of the composts produced at the platform of the NGO ENPRO in Lomé on the growth and agronomic parameters of maize (Zea mays L., var. IKENE). To do so, three types of compost (gargabe, fruit waste, animal litter) were made for at least 3 months. The chemical analysis, phytotoxicity and agronomic tests carried out made it possible to assess the maturity of these composts. Indeed, the evolution of the C/N ratio, of the electrical conductivity, the phytotoxicity tests and the growth parameters of the composts show that the composts N°1 and N°2 are mature at the end of the 3sup>rdsup> month of composting while the compost N°3 can only be considered mature at the end of the 5sup>thsup> month of composting. But, with a yield of 2.39 ± 0.28 t/ha and a mass of 1000 grains of 346 ± 4 g, the treatment at 5 t/ha of compost N°3, has the best agronomic parameters compared to other types of compost and treatment without organic amendment. These results also show that compost with a high electrical conductivity has an inhibitory effect on the growth of corn plants (Zea mays L., var. IKENE). Basic chemical analysis, phytotoxicity tests and height growth of maize (Zea mays L., var. IKENE) are relatively efficient methods for evaluating the maturity of composts.

This paper introduces a mathematical model which describes the dynamics of the spread of HIV in the human body. This model is comprised of a system of ordinary differential equations that involve susceptible cells, infected cells, HIV, immune cells and immune active cells. The distinguishing feature in the proposed model with respect to other models in the literature is that it takes into account cells that represent two distinct mechanisms of the immune system in the defense against HIV: the non-HIV-activated cells and the HIV-activated cells. With a view at minimizing the side effects of a treatment that employs a drug combination designed to attack the HIV at various stages of its life cycle, we introduce control variables that represent the infected patient’s medication. The optimal control rule that prescribes the medication for a given time period is obtained by means of Pontryagin’s maximum Principle.

Let X1 and X2 be two compact connected strongly pseudoconvex embeddable Cauchy-Riemann （CR） manifolds of dimensions 2m - 1 and 2n - 1 in Cm＋l and Cn＋l, respectively. We introduce the thom- sebastiani sum X = X1 X2 which is a new compact connected strongly pseudoconvex embeddable CR manifold of dimension 2m＋2n＋ 1 in Cm＋n＋2. Thus the set of all codimension 3 strongly pseudoconvex compact connected CR manifolds in C^n＋1 for all n ≥ 2 forms a semigroup. X is said to be an irreducible element in this semigroup if X cannot be written in the form X1 X2. It is a natural question to determine when X is an irreducible CR manifold. We use Kohn-Rossi cohomology groups to give a necessary condition of the above question. Explicitly, we show that if X = X1 X2, then the Kohn-Rossi cohomology of the X is the product of those Kohn-Rossi cohomology coming from X1 and X2 provided that X2 admits a transversal holomorphic sl-action.
