Effect of micro-algae Schizochytrium sp.supplementation in plant diet on reproduction of female rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss):maternal programming impact of progeny

Background:The broodstock diet,and in particular the lipid and fatty acid composition of the diet,is known to play a key role in reproductive efficiency and survival of the progeny in fish.A major problem when replacing both fish meal and fish oil by plant sources is the lack of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA).To address this problem,we studied the effect of the plant-based diet supplemented with Schizochytrium sp.microalgae,source of DHA,compared to a conventional commercial diet rich in fish meal and fish oil on reproductive performance and egg quality and the consequences on progeny,in female rainbow trout broodstock.Results:The results demonstrated that DHA-rich microalgae supplementation in a plant-based diet allowed for the maintenance of reproductive performance and egg quality comparable to a conventional commercial feed rich in fish meal and fish oil and led to an increased significant fry survival after resorption.Moreover,when females were fed a plant-based diet supplemented with micro-algae,the 4-month-old progenies showed a significant higher growth when they were challenged with a similar diet as broodstock during 1 month.We provide evidence for metabolic programming in which the maternal dietary induced significant protracted effects on lipid metabolism of progeny.Conclusions:The present study demonstrates that supplementation of a plant-based diet with DHA-rich microalgae can be an effective alternative to fish meal and fish oil in rainbow trout broodstock aquafeed.

Penalty kicks are increasingly decisive in major international football competitions.Yet,over 30%of shootout kicks are missed.The outcome of the kick often relies on the ability of the penalty taker to exploit anticipatory movements of the goalkeeper to redirect the kick toward the open side of the goal.Unfortunately,this ability is difficult to train using classical methods.We used an augmented reality simulator displaying an holographic goalkeeper to test and train penalty kick performance with 13 young elite players.Machine learning algorithms were used to optimize the learning rate by maintaining an optimal level of training difficulty.Ten training sessions of 20 kicks reduced the redirection threshold by 120 ms,which constituted a 28%reduction with respect to the baseline threshold.Importantly,redirection threshold reduction was observed for all trained players,and all things being equal,it corresponded to an estimated 35%improvement of the success rate.

BACKGROUND Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI),characterized by a collection of gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall,is an uncommon but well-known condition in gastroenterology.Abdominal pain is the most frequent symptom associated with PCI.Intussusception represents a potential cause of recurrent abdominal pain or emergency presentation.However,the occurrence of colonic intussusception secondary to PCI is very unusual in adulthood.CASE SUMMARY A 52-year-old male,known with idiopathic PCI,presented seventeen months after initial diagnosis with a new right upper quadrant pain.A computed tomographyscan demonstrated a colonic intussusception at the hepatic flexure.PCI did not progress compared with initial investigation.The patient underwent an emergency right hemicolectomy.CONCLUSION Resection was recommended in this case because PCI proved to be persisting with no identified curable cause.Surgery allowed to address the underlying pathology,the potential relapse of intussusception,and the likely cause of recurrent abdominal pain,either invagination or PCI itself.

Contribution to the Study of Fungal Strains Contaminating Peanut Pastes in Bangui (Central African Republic)

Introduction: Peanut pastes are food products resulting from artisanal or industrial processing, used in cooking in Africa in general and in Central African Republic in particular. These peanut pastes are often contaminated by molds and filamentous fungi involved in the degradation of hygienic and organoleptic or even toxicological quality. This study aims to determine the epidemiological profile of molds contaminating peanut pastes sold on the Central African market. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study carried out from June to September 2023. Samples of peanut pastes sold on Central African market were taken and analyzed at the National Laboratory of Clinical Biology and Public Health using the conventional microbiology method according to ISO 7954 standards. The data obtained were collected in the ODK 2023.3.1 application and analyzed with the Epi Info 7 software. A multivariate analysis by logistic regression, Ficher’s exact test, and chi2 at the 5% threshold (p Penicillium sp.;11.25% of Mucor sp.;10.63% of Aspergillus terrei;3.13% of Aspergillus niger;1.25% of Aspergillus medullans;28.13% of Aspergillus flavus;2.50% of Aspergillus fumigatus. Peanut pastes stored beyond three days were more contaminated (94.19%). Conclusion: The results of this study made it possible to highlight strains of mold that impact the hygienic and organoleptic quality of peanut pastes sold at the Central African market. Most of the isolated strains were the Aspergillus flavus species which is recognized by its toxigenic effects. This species is much more incriminated in the contamination of foodstuffs with the production of the toxin which causes underlying pulmonary pathologies in humans.

The impact-sliding wear behavior of steam generator tubes in nuclear power plants is complex owing to the dynamic nature of the mechanical response and self-induced tribological changes.In this study,the effects of impact and sliding velocity on the impact-sliding wear behavior of a 2.25Cr1Mo steel tube are investigated experimentally and numerically.In the experimental study,a wear test rig that can measure changes in the impact and friction forces as well as the compressive displacement over different wear cycles,both in real time,is designed.A semi-analytical model based on the Archard wear law and Hertz contact theory is used to predict wear.The results indicate that the impact dynamic effect by the impact velocity is more significant than that of the sliding velocity,and that both velocities affect the friction force and wear degree.The experimental results for the wear depth evolution agree well with the corresponding simulation predictions.

Common genetic variants in the TP53 pathway and their impact on cancer

The TP53 gene is well known to be the most frequently mutated gene in human cancer.In addition to mutations,there are > 20 different coding region single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TP53 gene,as well as SNPs in MDM2,the negative regulator of p53.Several of these SNPs are known to alter p53 pathway function.This makes p53 rather unique among cancer-critical genes,e.***.the coding regions of other cancer-critical genes like Ha-Ras,RB,and PI3KCA do not have non-synonymous coding region SNPs that alter their function in cancer.The next frontier in p53 biology will consist of probing which of these coding region SNPs are moderately or strongly pathogenic and whether they influence cancer risk and the efficacy of cancer therapy.The challenge after that will consist of determining whether we can tailor chemotherapy to correct the defects for each ofthese variants.Here we review the SNPs in TP53 and MDM2 that show the most significant impact on cancer and other diseases.We also propose avenues for how this information can be used to better inform personalized medicine approaches to cancer and other diseases.

An Investigation of Freezing of Supercooled Water on Anti-Freeze Protein Modified Surfaces

This work investigates how functionalization of aluminium surfaces with natural type III Anti-Freeze Protein （AFP） affects the mechanism of heterogeneous ice nucleation. First the bulk ice nucleation properties of distilled water and aqueous solution of AFP were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry. Then the modified surface was characterized by Secondary Ions Mass Spectroscopy （SIMS）, Fourier Transform InfraRed （FTIR） spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. Freezing experiments were then conducted in which water droplets underwent a slow controlled cooling. This study shows that compared to uncoated aluminium, the anti-freeze proteins functionalized surfaces exhibit a higher and narrower range of freezing temperature. It was found that these proteins that keep living organisms from freezing in cold environment act in the opposite way once immobilized on surfaces by promoting ice nucleation. Some suggestions regarding the mechanism of action of the observed phenomena were proposed based on the Classical Nucleation Theory （CNT）.

A comparative analysis of alternative approaches to fitting species-abundance models

Aims Fits of species-abundance distributions to empirical data are increasingly used to evaluate models of diversity maintenance and community structure and to infer properties of communities,such as species richness.Two distributions predicted by several models are the Poisson lognormal(PLN)and the negative binomial(NB)distribution;however,at least three different ways to parameterize the PLN have been proposed,which differ in whether unobserved species contribute to the likelihood and in whether the likelihood is conditional upon the total number of individuals in the sample.Each of these has an analogue for the NB.Here,we propose a new formulation of the PLN and NB that includes the number of unobserved species as one of the estimated parameters.We investigate the performance of parameter estimates obtained from this reformulation,as well as the existing alternatives,for drawing inferences about the shape of species abundance distributions and estimation of species richness.Methods We simulate the random sampling of a fixed number of individuals from lognormal and gamma community relative abundance distributions,using a previously developed‘individual-based’bootstrap algorithm.We use a range of sample sizes,community species richness levels and shape parameters for the species abundance distributions that span much of the realistic range for empirical data,generating 1000 simulated data sets for each parameter combination.We then fit each of the alternative likelihoods to each of the simulated data sets,and we assess the bias,sampling variance and estimation error for each method.Important Findings Parameter estimates behave reasonably well for most parameter values,exhibiting modest levels of median error.However,for the NB,median error becomes extremely large as the NB approaches either of two limiting cases.For both the NB and PLN,>90%of the variation in the error in model parameters across parameter sets is explained by three quantities that corresponded to the proportion of species not observed in the sam

BACKGROUND Synchronous colonic cancer incidence is uncommon,and awareness about this rare condition is improved recently.However,in the presence of acute colonic obstruction,investigation and management of synchronous colonic cancer can be difficult and challenging.CASE SUMMARY A patient presented with acute colonic obstruction with impending rupture and complete examination of this patient revealed the presence of three colonic cancers,of which two were completely occluding.CONCLUSION The presence of multiple colonic cancers must be ruled out in order to plan the best management.We present the case with a review of literature and discuss the management of the case.

Characterization of meso-scale mechanical properties of Longmaxi shale using grid microindentation experiments

Mechanical properties,such as the hardness H,Young’s modulus E,creep modulus C,and fracture toughness Kc,are essential parameters in the design of hydraulic fracturing systems for prospective shale gas formations.In this study,a practical methodology is presented for obtaining these properties through microindentation experiments combined with quantitative observations of the mineralogical phases using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)with backscattered electron(BSE)imaging,and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS)analyses.We apply this method in the case of three types of Longmaxi shales with different mineralogies(i.***.carbonate-,clay-,and quartz-rich,respectively),which allows us to determine the characteristic indentation depth,hc?8e10 mm,beyond which the mechanical response of the carbonate-rich shale is homogeneous and independent of its complex heterogeneous microstructure.Moreover,exploiting the results of a large number of indentation tests,we demonstrate that the indentation modulus M of the shale increases as a power-law of hardness H,and its creep modulus C increases linearly with H.We also compute the fracture toughness Kc from the indentation data by assuming a perfectly plastic behavior of the sample.Our results are in good agreement with independent measurements of Kc determined by microscratch tests.Finally,further tests on quartz-and clay-rich samples of the Longmaxi shale suggest further variations in the samples’mechanical properties depending on their burial conditions and the mechanical properties of their dominant mineral phases.
