Vulvar Rejuvenation Using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU): Fundamentals and Technique

Background: The unaesthetic appearance of the female intimate area (vulva, “mound of venus” and perianal region) is a triggering factor of negative psychological responses, embarrassment, anxiety and insecurity in many women. Using rejuvenating equipment for vaginal structure or for the intimate area as a whole is already widespread in the literature, and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) has proven to be very effective in the clinical practice of many professionals. This study, therefore, aims to describe the fundamentals and applicability that guide the use of HIFU in vulvar rejuvenation. Materials and Methods: Exploratory research was carried out, presented in a narrative review, to highlight the action of HIFU in female intimate rejuvenation. The review explored scientific articles published and available in the following databases: MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online), PubMed (National Library of Medicine), SCIELo (Scientific Electronic Library online), and LILACS (Latin Literature American and the Caribbean in Health Sciences). In addition, some clinical findings obtained through a retrospective analysis of medical records were added to describe the authors’ clinical experience in the use of Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for vulvar rejuvenation. Results: We verified that the tissues of female external genitalia respond very well to the stimuli of the focused sound waves of the HIFU, being able to produce immediate and lasting results through isolated applications or in association with intradermotherapy or other therapeutic resources. Conclusion: We conclude that using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound aimed at vulvar rejuvenation is safely indicated and assures excellent aesthetic results at the end of the treatment because similarly to other treatment techniques, the thermal stimuli of HIFU are also able to produce an excellent therapeutic response in the dermal tissue of the female intimate area, promoting intense neocollagen

Spatial-temporal distribution of fatal yellowing in different oil palm genetic materials in eastern amazon

oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is one of the agricultural crops with the greatest potentialfor vegetable oil production in Brazil. However, a disease of unknown etiology popularlyknown as Fatal Yellowin (FY) has caused damage to Brazilian farmers particularly in theeastern region of the Amazon. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatialdependence of FY on three oil palm genotypes, grown for many years in an organic produc-tion system in the Amazon region. The study area had 4104 ha, divided into 139 plots. Ineach plot, the monthly incidence of disease was monitored forming a database. The num-ber of diseased plants per year, number of accumulated diseased plants, number of dis-eased plants per hectare, growth rate of diseased plants and incidence of accumulateddisease were evaluated. The results indicated spatial distribution of the variables adjustedto the gaussian, spherical and exponential models, with predominance of the first *** increases the purpose that FY is caused by biotic factors. The highest range achievedin the study was 2929 m indicating the susceptibility of the tested genotypes. Some plotsclose to the river had the highest incidence of the disease on the study, probably associatedwith higher soil moisture.

Improving the Thermal Efficiency and Performance of Refrigeration Systems:Numerical-Experimental Analysis of Minimization of Frost Formation

The frost growth on cold surfaces in evaporators is an undesirable phenomenon which becomes a problem for the thermal efficiency of the refrigeration systems because the ice layer acts as a thermal insulation,drastically reducing the rate of heat transfer in the *** accumulation implies an increase in energy demand and a decrease in the performance of various components involved in the refrigeration process,reducing its efficiency and making it necessary to periodically remove the frost,resulting in expenses for the defrost *** the present work,a numerical-experimental analysis was performed in order to understand the formation process of porous ice in flat plates with different surface treatments and *** understanding is of utmost importance to minimize the formation of porous ice on cold surfaces and improve equipment efficiency and *** this context,a low-cost experimental apparatus was developed,enabling an experimental analysis of the phenomenon under *** environmental conditions evaluated are the temperature of the cold surface,roomtemperature,humidity,and air *** material of the surfaces under study are aluminum,copper,and brass with different surface finishes,designated as smooth,grooved(hydrophilic),and varnished(hydrophobic).The numerical-experimental analysis demonstrates measurements and simulations of the thickness,surface temperature,and growth rate of the porous ice layer as a function of the elapsed *** numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results,indicating that the varnished surface,with hydrophobic characteristics,presents greater difficulty in providing the ***,the results showed that application of a coating allowed a significant reduction on the frost formation process contributing to the improvement of thermal efficiency and performance of refrigeration systems.

The Global Leprosy Assessment Index(GLAI):A new approach for measuring the severity of disease in Brazil

Background:In Brazil,the Ministry of Health(MH)monitors leprosy using 15 indicators,with the aim of imple-menting and evaluating evidence-based public ***,an excessive number of variables can compli-cate the definition of objectives and verification of epidemiological ***:In this paper,we develop the Global Leprosy Assessment Index(GLAI),a composite measure that integrates two key dimensions for the control the disease:epidemiological and *** a confirmatory factor analysis model to examine 2020 state-level data,we have standardized GLAI to a range of 0 to ***:Higher values within this range indicate a greater severity of the *** mean value of the GLAI was 0.67,with a standard deviation of *** has the highest value,followed by Paraíba with 0.88 while Tocantins records the lowest value of the indicator,followed by Mato Grosso with *** epidemiological and operational indicators have a positive but statistically insignificant correlation(r=0.25;p-value=0.20).Conclusions:The development of evidence-based public policies depends on the availability of valid and reliable *** GLAI presented in this paper is easily reproducible and can be used to monitor the disease with disaggregated ***,the GLAI has the potential to serve as a more robust parameter for evaluating the impact of actions designed to eradicate leprosy in Brazil.

Tertiary peritonitis: A disease that should not be ignored

Intra-abdominal infections can be classified into uncomplicated or complicated(peritonitis). Peritonitis is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary. Tertiaryperitonitis is the less common but the most severe among peritonitisstratifications, being defined as a recurrent intra-abdominal infection that occurs48 h after a well-succeeded control of a secondary peritonitis. This disease has acomplex pathogenesis that is closely related to the capacity of the peritonealcavity to activate immunological processes. Patients who progress to persistentperitonitis are at an increased risk of developing several infectious complicationssuch as sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome. Moreover, tertiary peritonitisremains an important cause of hospital death mainly among patients withassociated risk factors. The microbiological profile of organisms causing tertiaryperitonitis is often different from that observed in other types of peritonitis. Inaddition, there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing thiscondition, and an appropriate and successful clinical management depends on anearly diagnosis, which can be made easier with the use of clinical scorespresenting a good prediction value during the intensive care unit ***, immediate therapy should be performed to control theinfectious focus and to prevent new recurrences. In this sense, the treatment isbased on initial antimicrobial therapy and well-performed peritoneal drainage.

objective: To identify the main chemical classes of compounds from aqueous extract of Enterolobium contortisiliquum(E. contortisiliquum) seed bark and to evaluate its antibacterial activity, as well as its potential to increase the activity of antibiotics against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia ***: Different classes of compounds in the aqueous extract of E. contortisiliquum were evaluated based on the visual changes in the coloration and the formation of precipitate after the addition of specific reagents. The antibacterial activity of the extract and its potential to increase of antibiotic activity of antibiotics drugs, gentamicin and norfloxacin was determined by using the microdilution ***: our results demonstrated that the following secondary metabolites were presented in E. contortisiliquum seed bark: flavones, flavonols, xanthones, flavononols,chalcones, aurones, flavones and catechins. The extract itself had very low antibacterial activity against all bacterial strains tested(MIC ≥ 1024 μg/m L), but there was an increase in the antibiotic activity of gentamicin and norfloxacin when combined in the subinhibitory concentration(i.e., MIC/8).Conclusions: our data suggests that E. contortisiliquum seed bark may be an alternative source for new drugs with the potential to increase antibiotic activity against different strains of bacteria.
