The Role of Human Herpesvirus Type-6 (HHV-6) in Convulsions Seen in Children at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra

Background: Since the isolation of HHV-6 in 1986, extensive investigation has revealed it to be ubiquitous and responsible for the majority of cases of a common febrile rash illness of infants known as roseola. Other clinical associations including seizure disorders, encephalitis and meningitis have also been stated in various publications. Objective: The aim of the study is to find out if there is any association between HHV-6 infection and the convulsions prevailing at the Child Health Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra-Ghana. Methods and Results: Children admitted into the Department of Child Health with episode of convulsions were recruited after informed consent had been sought from subjects. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and Plasma were obtained from patients. PCR directed at the detection of the large tegument protein (LTP) gene in the SiE strain of the HHV-6 in Plasma and CSF from patients was done. The mean age of study subjects was 37.44 months with 53 (64.6%) being males. There was a significant relationship between the convulsions and fever (P istics gathered, viral infections may be the probable cause of the observed convulsions but not malaria or bacterial infections. None of the samples from the patients had evidence of HHV-6. Conclusion: The study was unable to establish HHV-6 infection in the CSF and Plasma of patients. What role if any HHV-6 has in convulsions seen in children or neurological diseases at large merits further studies. Other neurotropic viruses need to be investigated as possible causes for the convulsions.

Short-Term influence of Burning on Species Abundance, Biomass Production, Wood Plant Density and Browsing Unit in an Albany Thicket of the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Fire is regarded as management practice for maintaining grasslands and savannas. The vegetation occurring in fire prone areas becomes highly adapted to fire occurrences in savannas and grasslands. However, documentation on the influence of burning on vegetation is still limited in an albany thicket biome. The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term influence of burning on species abundance, biomass production, wood plant density and browsing unit. Six plots (2500 m2) were demarcated;in each plot two parallel transects of 120 m2 with 5 m distance apart were measured. Three plots were burned in spring season, while no burning was done on the other remaining plots. Forty points per plot were obtained using step-point method to determine the relative abundance at burned and unburned plots. Woody plants occurred within a transect were identified, counted and recorded to determine density and browsing unit. Three quadrats (i.e. 0.25 m2) per plot were randomly laid within the transect;aboveground plant material within a quadrat were harvested. A total of 18 samples were harvested and oven dried at 60˚C for 48 hours to determine biomass production. The results showed that Themeda triandra (14%) and Panicum maximum (10%) were most abundant grass species at the burned plots. Burned plots had significantly higher biomass production (4804 kg/ha) compared to unburned plots (3641 kg/ha). Vachellia karoo (burned: 65.85% & unburn: 13.70%) and Searsia pallens (burned: 26.83% & unburned: 6.85%) were most dominant wood plant species at both burned and unburned plots. Burned plots had the highest browsing unit (3221 BU/ha) compared to unburned plots (2058 BU/ha). 零磁场在基础物理、医学、生物等领域的研究和应用具有重要价值。为克服地磁场对零磁空间相关研究的干扰,设计并搭建了一种三维均匀磁场主动补偿系统,研究其磁场补偿的特点及试验条件对补偿的影响。首先采用Lee-Whiting线圈与cosθ线圈联合方案制作了三维圆柱形线圈并实现磁场补偿,提高空间利用率;其中,线圈及骨架均用无磁材料制作,三维线圈的中心点重合且轴线方向两两垂直。然后通过理论计算得出线圈磁场的分布。最后将理论数据与试验结果进行对比并对磁场均匀性进行分析,并测量周围环境扰动及磁场传感器扫描速度对测量结果的影响。试验结果表明:在磁补偿系统直径为3.0 cm,长度为16 cm的圆柱形空间中,中心区域磁场绝对值接近为零,且磁场变化为1%范围内的区域与所测试空间区域的比例,理论与试验的误差小于4.5%;当磁场传感器扫描速度不高于9 mm/s且环境噪声低于17 dB时,对测量结果影响较小且能保证测量效率。本系统在简化装置与控制成本的基础上,实现产生均匀磁场并补偿地磁场的功能,可为基于零磁空间的缺陷检测、心脑磁测量、生物行为变化等提供理论与试验参考。

Human immunodeficiency Virus, Syphilis Prevalence and Risk Factors among Migrant Workers in Konongo, Ghana

Migrant workers, particularly gold mining workers, have been identified as a group at risk for HiV and sexually transmitted infections (STi). A cross-sectional study was undertaken on the correlates of human immunodeficiency virus (HiV) and syphilis infections in a sample of migrants (Ghanaian citizens [156] and non-Ghanaian citizens [8]) working in a gold mining centres in Konongo, Ghana. The study was conducted between the months of January 2013 to December 2013. Of a total of 600 eligible migrant workers, only 164 (27.33%;males 114, females 50) of the eligible migrants took part in the study. Subjects voluntarily completed a risk-factor questionnaire and provided blood specimen for testing for the presence of antibodies to HiV and Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. These data were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate techniques. The median age of the participants was 29.0 years (range 18 - 62 years). Of the 164 migrant workers tested, HiV and syphilis seroprevalence were 6.7% and 3.7% respectively. On multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for HiV infection were being female [odds ratio (OR) 2.94;95% confidence interval (95% Ci 0.86 - 10.0);unmarried (OR 10.13;95% Ci 1.2 - 81.09);drug use (OR 3.76;95% Ci 0.38 - 36.3);and blood transfusion (OR 2.45;95% Ci 0.27 - 22.37). Similarly, on multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for syphilis infection were having concurrent sexual partners (OR 2.16;95% Ci 0.38 - 12.12);and blood transfusion (OR 5.07;95% Ci 0.51 - 50.37). Consistent with similar studies worldwide, our results suggest high prevalence of HiV and syphilis infections among migrant workers who work in gold mining centres in Ghana.

Backgroundin onchocerciasis-endemic areas with high ongoing Onchocerca volvulus transmission,a high prevalence of epilepsy has been *** study aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of epilepsy in the Bono Region of Ghana following 27 years of implementation of ivermectin mass drug administration(MDA).MethodsBetween October 2020 and August 2021,cross-sectional surveys were conducted in nine communities in the Tain District and Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region of *** the first stage,a random door-to-door approach was used to screen the population for epilepsy using a pre-tested *** suspected of having epilepsy were invited for a second-stage neurological examination for case *** *** microfilarial infection status and Ov16 seropositivity were also ***-five confidence intervals(95%Ci)for prevalence values were calculated using the Wilson Score *** the 971 participants,500(51.5%)were females,and the median age(interquartile range)was 26(15‒43)*** participants(1.4%,95%Ci:1.0‒2.0)were diagnosed as having epilepsy with generalized seizures being the most frequent seizure type(85.7%,12/14).The overall microfilarial prevalence of *** was 10.3%(November 2020)and 9.9%(August 2021);the Ov16 seroprevalence was 22.2%(June 2021).Only 63.2%took ivermectin in the last round of MDA distribution in March *** 1.4%prevalence of epilepsy in the Bono region is similar to the median epilepsy prevalence in sub-Saharan ***,the persistent microfilarial prevalence and low ivermectin study coverage call for the Ghana Onchocerciasis Elimination Programme to step up its efforts to ensure that the gains achieved are consolidated and improved to achieve the elimination of onchocerciasis by 2030.
