The leaf size/number trade-off in herbaceous angiosperms

Aims In this study,we examined the extent to which between-species leaf size variation relates to variation in the intensity of leaf production in herbaceous *** size variation has been most commonly interpreted in terms of biomechanical constraints(*** by plant size limitations)or in terms of direct adaptation associated with leaf size effects in optimizing important physiological functions of individual leaves along environmental gradients(*** temperature and moisture).An additional interpretation is explored here,where adaptation may be more directly associated with the number of leaves produced and where relatively small leaf size then results as a trade-off of high‘leafing intensity’—*** of leaves produced per unit plant body *** The relationships between mean individual leaf mass,number of leaves and plant body size were examined for 127 species of herbaceous angiosperms collected from natural populations in southern Ontario,*** Findings In all,88%of the variation in mean individual leaf mass across species,spanning four orders of magnitude,is accounted for by a negative isometric(proportional)trade-off relationship with leafing *** results parallel those reported in recent studies of woody *** each leaf is normally associated with an axillary bud or meristem,having a high leafing intensity is equivalent to having a greater number of meristems per unit body size—i.e.a larger‘bud bank’.According to the‘leafing intensity premium’hypothesis,because an axillary meristem represents the potential to produce either a new shoot or a reproductive structure,high leafing intensity should confer greater architectural and/or reproductive plasticity(with relatively small leaf size required as a trade-off).This greater plasticity,we suggest,should be especially important for smaller species since they are likely to suffer greater suppression of growth and reproduction from competition within

STRAW BALES, A POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR HYGRO-THERMALLY COMFORTABLE DWELLINGS IN CHILE’S CENTRAL VALLEY: PHYSICAL TEST CHAMBERS AND IN SITU MEASUREMENTS

Dwellings in a Mediterranean climate, such as that of Chile’s Central Valley, must provide hygro-thermal comfort both during the cold winters, and the hot days and cool summer nights. Straw, once a material common in Chile’s indigenous and vernacular architecture, could meet these demands when coupled with sufficient thermal mass in the form of earth renders and floor finishes. This article presents measurements of dry bulb temperatures and relative humidity, both in physical test chambers and Chilean straw bale homes. The results of these measurements confirm that straw bale construction could provide hygro-thermal comfort with heating demands 28% less than those of constructions that meet the Chilean thermal building regulations. Straw bale, therefore, could provide a viable solution for comfortable, energy efficient, rural dwellings in Chile’s Central Valley. Whilst over 40 private straw bale projects have been completed in Chile to date, restrictions applying to projects receiving government subsidies prevent this technology being available to those who need it most.

A Damage Scenario for the 2012 Northern Italy Earthquakes and Estimation of the Economic Losses to Residential Buildings

In May 2012 a seismic sequence occurred in Northern Italy that was characterized by two main shocks with a magnitude range between 5.5 and 6. These shocks represent a good case study by which to quantify the monetary losses caused by a moderate earthquake in a densely populated and economically well-developed *** loss estimation accounts for damage to residential buildings, and considers the full effect of all the seismic aftershock events that lasted for nearly a month. The building damage estimation is based on the European Macroseismic Scale(EMS-98) definitions, which depict the effects of an earthquake on built-up areas in terms of observed intensities. Input data sources are the residential building census provided by Istituto Nazionale di Statistica—the Italian National Institute of Statistics(ISTAT)—and the official market value of real estate assets, obtained from the Osservatorio del Mercato Immobiliare—the Real Estate Market Observatory(OMI). These data make it possible to quantify the economic losses due to earthquakes, an economic indicator updated yearly. The proposed multidisciplinary method takes advantage of seismic,engineering, and economic data sets, and is able to provide a reasonable after the event losses scenario. Data are not gathered for each single building and the intensity values are not a simple hazard indicator, but, notwithstanding its coarseness, this method ensures both robust and reproducible results. As the local property value is availablethroughout the Italian territory, the present loss assessment can be effortlessly repeated for any area, and may be quickly reproduced in case of future events, or used for predictive economic estimations.

Transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of Locusta migratoria eggs at different embryonic stages: Comparison for diapause and non-diapause regimes

Temperate-zone insects typically survive winter by entering diapause. Although many aspects of insect diapause have been studied, the underlying molecular mechanism of insect diapause is not well understood. Here we report the results of the transcriptional and translational differences of migratory locust eggs at different embryonic states using diapause （low temperature） and non-diapause （high temperature） regimes. Compared with non-diapause eggs at 100 degree-days （N2） treatment, 29671 transcripts and 296 proteins were differentially expressed at the diapause maintenance stage （D2）. While compared with 150 degree-days （N3） treatment, 45 922 transcripts and 404 proteins were differentially expressed in the post-diapause stage （D3）. Among them, 51 and 102 transcripts had concurrent transcription and translation profiles in D2 vs. N2 and D3 vs. N3 treatments, respectively. Analysis of Gene Ontology categorized these genes and proteins into three categories： biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions. Biological pathway analysis indicat- ed that three pathways：（1） insect hormone biosynthesis （KEGG： Map 00981）, （2） the insulin signaling pathway （KEGG： Map 04910）, and （3） the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor （PPAR） signaling pathway （KEGG： Map 03320） play an important role in locust diapause regulation. Most of these transcripts and proteins were up-regulated in the diapause treatments, and were highly linked to juvenile hormone biosynthesis, insulin and PPAR signaling pathways, suggesting these three pathways may be Jnvolved Jn diapause and development regulation. This study demonstrates the applicability of high-throughput omics tools to identify biochemical pathways linked to diapause in locust egg development. In addition, it reveals that cellular metabolism in diapause eggs is more inactive than in non-diapause eggs, and most of the down-reg- ulated enzymes and pathways are related to reduce energy loss.

FAIR Equivalency, Regulatory Framework and Adoption Potential of FAIR Guidelines in Health in Kenya

This study explored the regulatory framework in Kenya that may facilitate the implementation of the FAIR Guidelines in health research, as well as the possibility of adopting the FAIR Guidelines at the national level. Fourteen key documents pivotal to the emerging digital health sector in Kenya were identified and analysed using a comprehensive coding and labelling approach based on a binary system for whether or not they mention the FAIR Guidelines or terms and vocabulary related to the FAIR Guidelines. The analysis revealed gaps in data stewardship that could be filled by the implementation of the FAIR Guidelines and, although the documents analysed do not explicitly mention the FAIR Guidelines, FAIR Equivalent terminology and practices are mentioned in varying detail. However, our analysis shows that there are still no provisions for the introduction and implementation of the FAIR Guidelines in health research in Kenya. Therefore, we recommend that the leadership be provided with a comprehensive introduction to the FAIR Guidelines, success stories about the FAIRification of data and research infrastructure in other parts of the world, and a demonstration of the steps needed for the FAIRification of health data in Kenya.

At present,laminar airflow(LAF)systems and mixing ventilation(MV)systems are two commonly used ventila-tion solutions for operating rooms(ORs)to ensure the required indoor air ***,recent studies have shown that there is little difference in the prevalence of surgical site infection(SSI)for the LAF systems and MV *** objective of this study was to compare the performance of an LAF system with an MV system in ORs at *** hospital,*** this study,all the experimental measurements were conducted in real ORs with LAF and MV *** study found that the air velocity above the surgical incision is approximately two times higher in the OR with LAF than that in the OR with *** use of surgical lamps and different airflow patterns may contribute to the different surgical microenvironment of ORs with LAF and MV.
