Effectiveness of sub-acromial injections in rotator cuff injuries:A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Sub-acromial injections are a therapeutic option for rotator cuff injuries;however,evidence regarding the most effective drug in this context is unclear,which needs to be *** To evaluate the effectiveness of various sub-acromial injections for rotator cuff *** We conducted a systematic review and pair-wise and network meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials(RCTs)comparing sub-acromial injections for rotator cuff *** interventions evaluated were hyaluronic acid(HA),platelet-rich plasma(PRP),prolotherapy,and *** outcomes of interest were pain and functional improvement,which were evaluated with standardized *** Risk of Bias 2 tool and the Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development and Evaluation methodology were used to assess data *** Twenty RCTs,comprising 1479 participants,were *** the short term,HA achieved the best outcomes[pain mean difference(MD)=-1.48,95%confidence interval(CI)-2.37 to-0.59;function MD=10.18,95%CI:4.96-15.41].In the medium term,HA,PRP,HA+PRP,and corticosteroids were not superior to placebo in improving *** on function,HA+PRP was superior to placebo,corticosteroids,and PRP(MD=26.72;95%CI:8.02-45.41).In the long term,HA,PRP,and corticosteroids were not superior to placebo in reducing ***,based on function,HA+PRP,PRP,and HA were superior to placebo,and HA+PRP had the best result(MD=36.64;95%CI:31.66-33.62).CONCLUSION HA provides satisfactory short-term results,while HA with PRP demonstrates functional improvement in the medium and long ***,no intervention maintained the pain-relief effect on>3-month follow-up.

Purple Grape Juice,an Important Flavonoids Source,Influence in Biochemical Parameters in Offspring of Wistar Rats

Our objective was to evaluate the effect of chronic gestational treatment and post-breast feeding with purple grape juice on the biochemical parameters in offspring of dams. We used 40 male offspring from 14 Wistar rats which received purple grape juice or water by gavage daily for 42 days at a dose of 7 microliters/g. The offspring were divided into groups of water or juice. All received daily purple grape juice or water by gavage for 30 days after completion of their nursing period at a dose of 7 microliters/g. At the end of the treatment period, the offspring were euthanized by decapitation with its truncal blood collected and subsequently separated the serum from the blood. The measurements were performed by automation or by manual dosing. Considering the gestational factor, grape juice was able to reduce levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and not alter the levels of creatinine and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in serum of the offspring. When considering the post-breast feeding factor, grape juice resulted in an improvement in HDL-C. We concluded that purple grape juice was able to produce a beneficial effect on certain biochemical parameters in offspring.

Bacteria form biofilms as an adaptive mechanism in response to environmental changes. Streptococcus mutans is the biofilm-forming bacterium that is primarily associated with dental caries. The expression of important genes by bacteria in biofilms is different from that of planktonic cells. Lectins are proteins that bind specifically to carbohydrates and may have important biological activities on bacterial cells, acting as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents. ConM (Canavalia maritima lectin) is a protein that is able to inhibit the planktonic growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of ConM and concanavalin A (ConA) on the expression of genes related to virulence and biofilm formation in S. mutans. The results showed that ConM significantly reduced the expression of genes encoding enzymes related to adhesion, formation and regulation of biofilms. On the contrary, ConA did not alter the expression of the genes studied. Because the two lectins have a high degree of similarity, the differences in the actions of ConM and ConA may be explained by the small structural differences in the carbohydrate recognition domain of the lectins.

Symbiotic relations are present in the nature and can contribute to the success of the organisms involved. Endophytic fungi live within the leaf tissues without causing any harm to the host plant, and some of them can be a defense mechanism against the attack by the leaf-cutting ants. Ants of the genus Atta are known as leaf-cutting ants and have an obligatory association with the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, cutting pieces of leaves and bringing them back to the colony to the fungus. The present study aimed to find out the endophytic fungi community of an attractive plant (Acalypha wilkesiana) and a less attractive plant (Colocasia esculenta) to the ants Atta sexdens. We found out that the communities are different in quantity and in composition and 73% of the isolated fungi were from A. wilkesiana, which has fungi known as attractive to leaf-cutting ants, such as genus Colletotrichum, Pestalotiopsis, Phomopsis and Xylaria. On the other hand, in C. esculenta, there was found the genus Fusarium, known to be reject by the leaf-cutting ants, and less fungal diversity than in the attractive plant A. wilkesiana. Therefore, our data suggest that attractivity or repelence of a plant to the leaf-cutting ants could be related to presence or ausence of determinated fungi more than the quantity of fungi present in a leaf.
