Stepped machine learning for the development of mineral models: Concepts and applications in the pre-salt reservoir carbonate rocks

Understanding rock mineralogy is essential for formation evaluation,improving the calculation of porosity and hydrocarbon *** primary method to obtain the mineralogy from a well is by applying a model to the geochemical tool’s chemical ***,creating a mineralogical model presents challenges such as the minerals’chemical composition and the decision to include a mineral in the *** traditional application of machine learning can make mineral models less realistic since conventional training is developed based on a set of minerals with different occurrences,lowering some minerals’*** present research proposes the stepped machine learning(SML),a stepped way to use machine learning to create a mineralogical model from chemical and mineralogical data.A database was assembled with the elemental concentration obtained with XRF analyses and the mineral concentrations obtained with XRD *** chemical elements were Al,Ca,Fe,K,Mg,Mn,Na,Si,and *** minerals were calcite,dolomite,quartz,clays,K-feldspar,plagioclase,and *** algorithms were tested:MLP,GAN,Random Forest,and XGBoost,with XGBoost showing the best *** was applied,where a mineral model results are used to train a subsequent *** allowed for a significant improvement in some models,notably to clays with an increase in R 2 from 0.597 to 0.853,quartz an increase from 0.673 to 0.869,and calcite,from 0.758 to 0.862.A decrease in the mean squared error of these minerals’models was also *** model was applied to the geochemical logs from three wells drilled in the Brazilian pre-salt,and the results were compared with XRD *** SML model was able to honor the mineral concentrations for different *** is demonstrated that the integration between machine learning tools and geological knowledge in SML was crucial for creating a representative mineralogical model.

The Shift in the Discourse About a Free Trade Area in the Brazilian Amazon： From Progress to Ecological Modernization

The Manaus Free Trade Area （ZFM） will end in 2023, but there is a proposal to amend the Brazilian Federal Constitution so that it lasts until 2073. From the understanding of discourse as a social practice, this paper is based on the analysis of 265 parliamentary pronouncements, 19 numbers of an institutional magazine, and 626 news texts from the most important local newspaper, all published between 2007 and 2010. It reveals a shift in the discourse about the ZFM, guided by ecological modernization. The industries are now presented as responsible for preserving the rainforest： it is said that if the tax incentives stop, there will be unemployment and deforestation. This tragic story line does not recognize the role of traditional peoples and communities in forest conservation and neither is open to the public debate about other models of development for the Amazon.

Gut microbiota,inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer

The gut microbiota is a complex community of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of humans,living in symbiosis with the ***,characterized by an imbalance between the beneficial and opportunistic gut microbiota,is associated with several gastrointestinal disorders,such as irritable bowel syndrome(IBS);inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease;and colorectal cancer(CRC).Dysbiosis can disrupt the mucosal barrier,resulting in perpetuation of inflammation and *** increase in some specific groups of harmful bacteria,such as Escherichia coli(***)and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis(ETBF),has been associated with chronic tissue inflammation and the release of pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic mediators,increasing the chance of developing CRC,following the inflammationdysplasia-cancer sequence in IBD ***,the aim of the present review was to analyze the correlation between changes in the gut microbiota and the development and maintenance of IBD,CRC,and IBD-associated *** with IBD and CRC have shown reduced bacterial diversity and abundance compared to healthy individuals,with enrichment of Firmicute sand *** bacteria are also associated with the onset and progression of CRC,such as Fusobacterium nucleatum,***,Enterococcus faecalis,Streptococcus gallolyticus,and *** research can evaluate the advantages of modulating the gut microbiota as preventive measures in CRC high-risk patients,directly affecting the prognosis of the disease and the quality of life of patients.

Seasonality of ER Admissions in Northwestern Pennsylvania: A Cross-Sectional Study

Seasonality, in the context of emergency room (ER) admissions, can be described as the periodic incidence of disease, corresponding to seasons, or other pre-established calendar periods. Respiratory diseases, in general, show a seasonal pattern with incidence peak at the winter season, however research still presents a considerable amount of inconsistency. Incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is also very well linked to the cold season. Gastrointestinal, genitourinary and neurological diseases are poorly studied in regards their seasonal patterns. This study aimed to assess seasonality of the five categories of diseases–respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and neurological-using data from a community hospital in northwestern PA. We analyzed 14 years (2000-2014) of data from the Meadville Medical Center (MMC) ER admissions. For each ER admission case, we had information about ICD-9 code, sex, insurance, race, age and date, time and year of admission. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 University version software. We found significantly fewer cases of respiratory diseases in spring (OR = 0.757), summer (OR = 0.579), and fall (OR = 0.741), when comparing to the winter season;however, seasonal differences were not found for cardiovascular, genitourinary, and neurological diseases. The implications of these results will primarily be used to improve Meadville’s public health policies for cold seasons, and more specifically, implement programs that prepare the ER to receive and treat respiratory cases more efficiently in the cold season.

Improving cover and management factor (C-factor) estimation using remote sensing approaches for tropical regions

The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)'s cover and management factor (C-factor) is one of the most difficult factors to obtain,mainly because long-term monitoring soil erosion plots under natural rainfall are ***,remote sensing approaches have been used as an alternative for obtaining this ***,there is a lack of studies comparing values of this factor computed from remote sensing approaches with measured *** this study,we compare two widely used remote sensing approaches (CrA and CVK) to estimate the C-factor based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with the literature (CLIT) and field experimental data..We also investigated the influence of C-factor methods on the prediction of soil loss and sediment yield (SY) using measured data in the Guariroba basin,Central-West *** obtained mean C-factor values of 0.032,0.023 and 0.137 for CLIT,CrA and CVK,*** found an average annual soil loss of 2.20 tha-1 yr-1,2.02 t ha-1 yr-1 and 10.07 tha-1 yr-1 and SY values of 6875 tyr-1,6468 tyr-1 and 33,435 t yr1,for CLIT,CrA and CVK *** results indicated a significant improvement in soil loss and SY estimations by using the CrA approach developed for tropical regions,with a bias of 13% to the measured SY (5709tyr-1).We conclude that the CrA method present the most suitable alternative to compute soil loss and SY in tropical ***,this approach allows large-scale evaluation and temporal monitoring,therefore enhancing multi spatial and temporal assessment of soil erosion processes.

Evaluation of Biodegradation in Aqueous Medium of Poly(Hydroxybutyrate-Co-Hydroxyvalerate)/Carbon Nanotubes Films in Respirometric System

Biodegradable polymers have been increasingly used for scientific and commercial applications because they are similar to some conventional thermoplastics and exhibit the ability of ***(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV)nanocomposites films with 1 and 2 wt% of carbon nanotubes(CNT)were prepared by solution mixing,followed by solvent *** this work,PHBV/CNT nanocomposites were submitted to biodegradation in an aqueous medium for 34 days through a respirometric ***,the PHBV films were analyzed by the CO2 production and mineralization as a response of a microbial attack,which was monitored by back titration during all the *** films were also characterized by measuring the weight loss;crystallinity was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).By analyzing the weight loss of the films,it was observed that adding CNT increases the resistance to biodegradation *** obtained values of CO2 production and mineralization of the samples,as well as the values of weight loss,showed that the biodegradation of PHBV/CNT nanocomposites was minor in comparison to neat *** addition of CNT in PHBV matrix influences the surface morphology,causing the presence of cavities and an increase of roughness.

MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are non-coding RNA molecules composed of 19–25 nucleotides that regulate gene expression and play a central role in the regulation of several immune-mediated disorders,including inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD).IBD,represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease,is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer(CRC).CRC is one of the most prevalent tumors in the world,and its main risk factors are obesity,physical inactivity,smoking,alcoholism,advanced age,and some eating habits,in addition to chronic intestinal inflammatory processes and the use of immunosuppressants administered to IBD *** studies have identified miRNAs associated with an increased risk of developing CRC in this *** identification of miRNAs involved in this tumorigenic process could be useful to stratify cancer risk development for patients with IBD and to monitor and assess ***,the present review aimed to summarize the role of miRNAs as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of IBD-associated *** the future,therapies based on miRNA modulation could be used both in clinical practice to achieve remission of the disease and restore the quality of life for patients with IBD,and to identify the patients with IBD at high risk for tumor development.

Preventable infant mortality: Spatial distribution and main causes in three Brazilian municipalities

Objective: The objective was to identify spatial distribution patterns for preventable infant mortality and the main causes of death in three municipalities of Paraná state, Brazil. Design and Sample: Ecological study on infant mortality among residents of the municipalities of Maringá, Sarandi and Pai?andu, between 2004 and 2008. Measures: Data were obtained from reports by the Infant Mortality Prevention Committee, georeferenced in 19 Demographic Expansion Areas and analyzed statistically using Local Moran’s Index. Results: Of the 284 deaths among children under one year of age, 68.7% were considered preventable, and higher percentages were found in outlying areas. The main causes were illnesses originated during the perinatal period (73.8%), external causes (11.3%) and diseases of the respiratory system (5.1%). Conclusion: It is necessary to implement actions and policies on child and prenatal assistance, in order to reduce the inequality observed between the central and outlying areas of the region under study.
