Evolution and changes of permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau during the Late Quaternary

Due to the uplift of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau （QTP）, the cryosphere gradually developed on the higher mountain summits after the neocene, becoming widespread during the Late Quaternary. During this time, permafrost on the QTP experienced repeated expansion and degradation. Based on the remains and cross-correlation with other proxy records such as those from glacial landforms, ice-core and paleogeography, the evolution and changes of permafrost and environmental changes on the QTP during the past 150,000 years were deduced and are presented in this *** least four obvious cycles of the extensive and intensive development, expansion and decay of permafrost occurred during the periods of 150-130, 80-50, 30-14 and after 10.8 ka B.P.. Ehiring the Holocene, fluctuating climatic environ-ments affected the permafrost on the QTP, and the peripheral mountains experienced six periods of discernible permafrost changes：（1） Stable development of permafrost in the early Holocene （10.8 to 8.5-7.0 ka B.P.）; （2） Intensive permafrost degradation during the Holocene Megathermal Period （HMP, from 8.5-7.0 to 4.0-3.0 ka B.P.）; （3） Permafrost expansion during the early neoglacial period （ca. 4,000-3,000 to 1,000 a B.P.）; （4） Relative degradation during the Medieval Warm Period （MWP,from 1,000 to 500 a B.R）; （5） Expansion of permafrost during the Little Ice Age （LIA,from 500 to 10.a B.P.）; （6） Observed and predicted degradation of permafrost during the 20th and 21st century. Each period differed greatly in paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, and permafrost distribution, thickness, areal extent, and ground temperatures, as well as in the development of periglacial phenomena. Statistically, closer dating of the onset permafrost formation, more identi-fication of permafrost remains with richer proxy information about paleoenvironment, and more dating information enable higher resolution for paleo-permafrost reconstruction. This paper develops a Fortran code which is capable to construct the simplest LS eigenfunctions for desired symmetry and determine all permitted atomic LS spectral terms under a given orbital occupancy by implementing and extending the Schaefer and harris method. Examples （in some cases the most complete set to date） of multiple spectroscopic terms of LS coupling of atomic states for both non-equivalent and equivalent electronic configurations are given. It also corrects a few observed errors from the recent literature.

The beam energy measurement system is of great importance for both BEPC-II accelerator and BES-III detector. The system is based on measuring the energies of Compton back-scattered photons. In order to meet the requirements of data taking and improve the measurement accuracy, the system has continued to be upgraded, which involves the updating of laser and optics subsystems, replacement of a view-port of the laser to the vacuum insertion subsystem, the use of an electric cooling system for a high purity germanium detector, and improvement of the data acquisition and processing subsystem. The upgrade system guarantees the smooth and efficient measurement of beam energy at BEPC-II and enables accurate offline energy values for further physics analysis at BES-III.

Importance:In remote communities of the northern Territory,Australia,children experience high rates of otitis media(OM),commonly caused by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae(nTHi).Few data exist on antibiotic susceptibility of nTHi from ***:To determine whether population-level nasopharyngeal nTHi antibiotic susceptibility data could inform antibiotic treatment for ***:nTHi isolates(n=92)collected from ear discharge between 2003 and 2013 were selected to time-and age-match nTHi isolates from the nasopharyngeal carriage(n=95).Antimicrobial susceptibility were *** trees and a genome-wide association study(GWAS)were performed to determine the similarity of nasopharyngeal and ear isolates at a population ***:Among 174 nTHi isolates available for antimicrobial susceptibility testing,10.3%(18/174)were resistant to ampicillin and 9.2%(16/174)were resistant to *** numbers of isolates(≤3)were resistant to tetracycline,chloramphenicol,or amoxicillin-clavulanic *** was no statistical difference in the proportion of ampicillin-resistant(P=0.11)or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-resistant isolates(P=0.70)between ear discharge and nasopharynx-derived nTHi *** multi-drug resistant nTHi isolates were *** trees showed no clustering of 187 Haemophilus influenzae isolates based on anatomical niche(nasopharynx or ear discharge),and no genetic variations that distinguished nTHi derived from ear discharge and nasopharyngeal carriage were evident in the ***:In this population-level study,nasopharyngeal and ear discharge isolates did not represent distinct microbial *** results support tracking of population-level nasopharyngeal nTHi antibiotic resistance patterns to inform clinical management of OM in this population.

The phase behaviors and structures of a triphenylene-derived discotic liquid crystal （LC） hexa-n-octoxyl- triphenylene （C8HET） were studied using the combined techniques of differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, wide angle X-ray diffraction （WAXD）, selected area electron diffraction （SAED） and polarized light microscopy （PLM）. Onedimensional （1D） powder WAXD results at different temperatures coupled with DSC and PLM observations revealed that the C8HET compound possessed an LC phase and three different crystalline （K3, K2 and K1） phases below the isotropic （I） melt. The I←→ LC phase transition was thermodynamically reversible and independent of the heating and cooling rates. The development and experimental observation of the three crystalline phases relied on different thermal histories. Among the three crystalline phases in CSHET, the K3 phase is the most stable phase, while the K2 and K1 phases are metastable. note that the K1 phase only formed via a quenching process. Oh the basis of structure sensitive diffraction experiments such as 2D WAXD of oriented samples and SAED of single crystals, detailed structures and molecular packings of these four ordered phases were identified. The LC phase exhibited a hexagonal columnar phase with 2D lattice dimensions ofa = b = 2.38 nm and γ= 120°. All the three crystalline phases possess monoclinic unit cells, yet the y angle is not 90° in the cases of the K2 and the K3 phases, while in the case of the K1 phase the a angle is not 90°.

Endoscopic ultrasound staging for early esophageal cancer: Are we denying patients neoadjuvant chemo-radiation?

AIM To evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) in early esophageal cancer(EC) performed in a highvolume tertiary cancer center. METHODS A retrospective review of patients undergoing esophagectomy was performed and patients with c T1 n0 and c T2 n0 esophageal cancer by EUS were evaluated. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment were reviewed. EUS staging was compared to surgical pathology to determine accuracy of EUS. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the cohort. Student's t test and Fisher's exact test or χ~2 test was used to compare variables. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine if clinical variables such as tumor location and tumor histology were associated with EUS *** Between 2000 and 2015, 139 patients with clinical stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ?A esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy were identified. There were 25(18%) female and 114(82%) male patients. The tumor location included the middle third of the esophagus in 11(8%) and lower third and gastroesophageal junction in 128(92%) patients. ninety-three percent of patients had adenocarcinoma. Preoperative EUS matched the final surgical pathology in 73/139 patients for a concordance rate of 53%. Twenty-nine patients(21%) were under-staged by EUS; of those, 19(14%) had unrecognized nodal disease. Positron emission tomography(PET) was used in addition to EUS for clinical staging in 62/139 patients. Occult nodal disease was only found in 4 of 62 patients(6%) in whom both EUS and PET were negative for nodal involvement. COnCLUSIOn EUS is less accurate in early EC and endoscopic mucosal resection might be useful in certain settings. The addition of PET to EUS improves staging accuracy.
