Paleomagnetic age and palaeobiological significance of hominoid fossil strata of Yuanmou Basin in Yunnan

the two sections containing hominoid fossils in the Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan Prov-ince have been studied by means of magnetostratigraphy. the results are as follows. the Xiaohe section records over 8 polarity zones corresponding to Cande-Kent95 time scale, including C3Br.1n, C3Br.1r, C3Br.2n, C3Br.2r, C4n.1n, C4n.1r, C4n.2n and C4n.2r, attaching to Late Mio-cene. this section comprises two layers of hominoid fossils: the lower layer (the 1st layer in fig. 4) which records the lower portion of C4n.2r with paleomagnetic age of 8.20—8.10 Ma and the upper layer (the 16th layer in fig. 4) which records C3Br.1r with paleomagnetic age of 7.20—7.15 Ma. So the age of hominoid fossils in the Xiaohe section is about 8.20—7.15 Ma. the Leilao section records over 11 polarity zones corresponding to Cande-Kent95 time scale, including C3Br, C3Br.1n, C3Br.1r, C3Br.2n, C3Br.2r, C4n.1n, C4n.1r, C4n.2n, C4n.2r, C4n.3n and C4n.3r, attaching to Late Miocene. this section also consists of two layers of hominoid fossils: the lower layer (the 3rd layer in fig. 3) which records C4n.2r with the age of 8.20—8.10 Ma and the upper layer(the 19th layer in fig. 3) which records the middle portion of C3Br with the age of 7.15—7.1 Ma. So the age of hominoid fossils in the Leilao section is about 8.20—7.10 Ma. Sedimentary environments reflected in both sections are extremely similar, and the ages of hominoid fossils are of correspondency. the age of the lower and upper fossil layers is 8.20—8.10 Ma and 7.20—7.10 Ma respectively, which probably imply that hominoids living in Xiaohe and Leilao basins have uniform activity areas. there were hominoids activities all along during 8.00—7.00 MaBP in this field.

Ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes after taurinetreatment in CCl_4 induced liver injury

AIM: To search the organelle based changes in hepatocytes after taurine treatment in experimental liver fi brosis induced by CCl_4 administration. MEthODS: thirty rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 15) was injected with CCl_4 plus taurine and Group 2 (n = 15) with CCl_4 plus saline for 12 wk. At the end of 12th wk, mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and nuclei of hepatocytes were evaluated using a scoring system. the results were compared with histopathological f indings, as well. RESULTS: Taurine treatment reduced fi brosis scores signifi cantly as compared to placebo. Organelle injury scores decreased signifi cantly with taurine treatment. Ultrastructural and histopathological scores in both groups were in strong correlation (r = 0.931 for CCl_4 plus taurine and r = 0.899 for CCl_4 plus saline group). CONCLUSION: Organelle based transmission electron microscopy fi ndings can reflect successfully histological results as well as tissue healing in hepatocytes from hepatotoxin-induced liver fi brosis.

Non-tidal tilt and strain signals recorded at the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa,thuringia/Germany

Since end of the 90s of the last century the seismological station Moxa was extended and developed into the modern Geodynamic Observatory. It comprises also the new installation of borehole-tilt meters in front of the observatory building and laser-strain meters in the gallery. the question arises how non-tidal signals are displayed in the measured time series. the investigation of such signals which can be caused naturally or man-made, can result in different sensitivities for the various tilt- and strainmeter systems, e.g. regarding barometric pressure impacts and hydrological induced pore pressure effects.

the purpose of this study was to examine the induction profiles （as judged by quantitative reverse tran- scription polymerase chain reaction （qRT-PCR）） of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor （PPAR） α,β, y subtypes and major PPAR-target genes bearing a functional peroxisome proliferator responsive element （PPRE） in HepG2 cell model upon feeding with cis-9,trans-11-octadecadienoic acid （9-CLA） or trans-10,cis-12-octadecadienoic acid （10-CLA） or their precursor fatty acids （FAs）. HepG2 cells were treated with 100 pmol/L 9-CLA or 10-CLA or their precursor FAs, viz., oleic, linoleic, and trans-11-vaccenic acids against bezafibrate control to evaluate the induc- tion/expression profiles of PPAR （α, β, γ subtypes and major PPAR-target genes bearing a functional PPRE, i.e., fatty acid transporter （FAT）, glucose transporter-2 （GLUT-2）, liver-type FA binding protein （L-FABP）, acyl CoA oxidase-1 （ACOX-1）, and peroxisomal bifunctional enzyme （PBE） with reference to β-actin as house keeping gene. Of the three housekeeping genes （glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase （GAPDH）, β-actin, and ubiquitin）, β-actin was found to be stable. Dimethyl sulfoxide （DMSO）, the common solubilizer of agonists, showed a significantly higher induction of genes analyzed, qRT-PCR profiles of CLAs and their precursor FAs clearly showed upregulation of FAT, GLUT-2, and L-FABP （-0.5-.0-fold）. Compared to 10-CLA, 9-CLA decreased the induction of the FA metabolizing gene ACOX-1 less than did PBE, while 10-CLA decreased the induction of PBE less than did ACOX-I. Both CLAs and precursor FAs upregulated PPRE-beadng genes, but with comparatively less or marginal activation of PPAR subtypes this indicates that the binding of CLAs and their precursor FAs to PPAR subtypes results in PPAR activation, thereby induction of the target transporter genes coupled with downstream lipid metabolising genes such as ACOX-1 and PBE. A Cognitive Radio Receiver Supporting Wide-Band Sensing

the specification of IEEE 802.22 defines the world-wide first cognitive radio (CR) standard. Within a range of 40 MHz to 910 MHz CR systems are allowed to allocate spectrum besides the currently established radio services like radio and TV broadcasting. In order to fulfill the regulative guidelines of interference limita-tions, a capable spectral sensing and user detection has to be provided. Due to the wide frequency range specified in IEEE 802.22 and the high dynamic range of signals allocated in this band there are high de-mands on the CR receiver’s front-end. Especially the performance requirements on analog-to-digital con-verters increase significantly compared to current wireless systems. Based on measurements taken in this frequency range requirements to CR’s ADCs are figured out. Furthermore, the measurement results are ana-lyzed regarding expectable allocation scenarios and their impacts to spectral sensing. Derived from this re-sults and a comparison of general spectral sensing mechanisms an approach for a CR receiver supporting wide-band sensing is presented. Considering the apriori information resulting from scenario analysis and including adapted information processing in the terminal the ADC’s performance requirements can be re-duced.

AIM To establish patient-individual tumor models of rectal cancer for analyses of novel biomarkers, individual response prediction and individual therapy *** Establishment of cell lines was conducted by direct in vitro culturing and in vivo xenografting with subsequent in vitro culturing. Cell lines were in-depth characterized concerning morphological features, invasive and migratory behavior, phenotype, molecular profile including mutational analysis, protein expression, and confirmation of origin by DNA fingerprint. Assessment of chemosensitivity towards an extensive range of current chemotherapeutic drugs and of radiosensitivity was performed including analysis of a combined radioand chemotherapeutic treatment. In addition, glucose metabolism was assessed with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) and proliferation with 18 *** We describe the establishment of ultra-low passage rectal cancer cell lines of three patients suffering from rectal cancer. Two cell lines(HROC126, HROC284 Met) were established directly from tumor specimens while HROC239 T0 M1 was established subsequent to xenografting of the tumor. Molecular analysis classified all three cell lines as CIMP-0/non-MSI-H(sporadic standard) type. Mutational analysis revealed following mutational profiles: HROC126: APC^(wt), TP53^(wt), KRAS^(wt), BRAF^(wt), PTEN^(wt); HROC239 T0 M1: APC^(mut), P53^(wt), KRAS^(mut), BRAF^(wt), PTEN^(mut) and HROC284 Met: APC^(wt), P53^(mut), KRAS^(mut), BRAF^(wt), PTEN^(mut). All cell lines could be characterized as epithelial(EpCAM+) tumor cells with equivalent morphologic features and comparable growth kinetics. the cell lines displayed a heterogeneous response toward chemotherapy, radiotherapy and their combined application. HROC126 showed a highly radio-resistant phenotype and HROC284 Met was more susceptible to a combined radiochemotherapy than HROC126 and HROC239 T0 M1.
