Remote sensing vs.field-based monitoring of agricultural terrace degradation

The degradation of agricultural terraces is considered a major challenge to soil and water conservation in steep-slope viticulture.Although terracing is a widespread conservation practice,its sustainability is threatened by adverse climatic and man-made conditions.Previous studies have shown the impact of terrace designs on the formation of runoff pathways,causing degradation processes on terrace platforms(e.***.sheet erosion)and walls(e.***.piping,landslides,collapse).This study evaluates a remote sensing versus a field-based approach to monitor hydrological processes responsible for terrace degradation,as tested in a north-Italian vineyard.The field-based approach was based on spatially measured Soil Moisture Content(SMC)using a Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR)instrument,which clearly revealed saturation hotspots around two damaged terraces in the study area.Moreover,these zones showed a particular cross-sectional SMC profile,with the highest saturation close to the terrace platform edges.The remote sensing approach was based on aerial imagery acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)and photogrammetric reconstruction of the vineyard geomorphology,allowing terrain-based analysis and physical erosion modelling.In this approach,simulations indicated that terrace damages could be partly explained by the formation of preferential runoff pathways caused by the terrace design.This parallel methodology allowed a comparison of the merits and limitations of either approach,as done in light of published work.The occurrence of two SMC hotspots at terrace edges(and their non-typical cross-sectional profiles)could be better understood from simulated surface flow paths.While the causal relationship between heterogeneous soil saturation and terrace instability has been previously reported in literature,the novelty of the presented study is the use of topsoil SMC as an indicator of potential damages,favouring the scalability compared to fixed,local and often intrusive terrace sub-surface ex-periments.Remote sensing based approache

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most common causes of cancerrelated mortality.This particular type of cancer has the distinctive characteristic of mostly happening in individuals with an underlying liver disease.This makes the management of patients more challenging,since physicians must take into consideration two different conditions,the chronic liver disease and the tumor.The underlying liver disease has several implications in clinical practice,because different kinds of chronic liver disease can lead to varying degrees of risk of developing HCC,obstacles in surveillance,and differences in the efficacy of the treatment against HCC.A shift in the prevalence of liver diseases has been evident over the last few years,with viral hepatitis gradually losing the leading position as cause of HCC and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease gaining importance.Therefore,in an era of personalized medicine,it is imperative that physicians are aware of the underlying liver disease of individuals with HCC and its impact in the management of their tumors.

Adding Value to Crop Production Systems by Integrating Forage Cover Crop Grazing

In addition to their value as cereal grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) are important cool-season annual forages and cover crops. Yearling steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring following autumn establishment as for age cover crops after soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grain harvest. Replicated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-till seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubble in autumn, fertilized, and grazed the following spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuously stocked in spring with four yearling steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. In 2005, average daily gain (ADG) for steers grazing triticale exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for triticale by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat lost weight, while steers grazing triticale gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year average animal gains valued at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for triticale and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing could be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional value to the system. Based on this 3-year grazing trial, triticale was superior to wheat and likely will provide the most stable beef yearling performance across years with variable weather for the western Cornbelt USA.

In-situ preparation of robust self-lubricating composite coating from thermally sprayed ceramic template

The self-lubricating ceramic coatings that can control friction and wear have attracted researchers’widespread attention.However,the poor interfacial bonding between lubricants and ceramics and the deterioration of mechanical properties due to a tribological design limit their practical applications.Here,a robust self-lubricating coating was fabricated by an in-situ synthesis of MoS_(2)/C within inherent defects of thermally sprayed yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)coatings.The edge-pinning by noncoherent endows hybrid coatings with excellent interfacial strength,increasing their hardness(HV)and cohesive strength.Furthermore,owing to the formation of a well-covered robust lubricating film at a frictional interface,a coefficient of friction(COF)can be reduced by 79.6%to 0.15,and a specific wear rate(W)drops from 1.36×10^(−3) to 6.27×10^(−7) mm^(3)·N^(−1)·m^(−1).Combining outstanding mechanical properties and tribological performance,the hybrid coating exhibits great application potential in controlling friction and wear.Importantly,this strategy of introducing the target materials into the inherent defects of the raw materials to improve the relevant properties opens new avenues for the design and preparation of composite materials.

Charmonium spectroscopy and decay at CLEO-c

We report recent results on charmonium spectroscopy and decay from the CLEO-c experiment at the Cornell electrompositron storage ring accelerator, CESR. Most of the results are based on the analysis of 54 pb-1 of luminosity collected at the ψ（2S） resonance, corresponding to 27 M ψ（2S） decays. We concentrate on radiative decays of ψ（2S） and J/ψ, on two-body mesonic decay of XcJ, on hadronic decay of the he, and on higher multipoles in the two-photon cascade ψ（2S）→γχcJ, XcJ→γJ/ψ.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is among the most common cancers and it is a major cause of cancer-related deaths.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)affects approximately one fourth of individuals worldwide and it is becoming one of the most important causes of HCC.The pathogenic mechanisms leading to NAFLD-related HCC are complex and not completely understood.However,metabolic,fibrogenic,oncogenic,inflammatory and immunological pathways seem to be involved.First-line therapy of advanced HCC has recently undergone major changes,since the combination of atezolizumab and bevacizumab was proven to increase survival when compared to sorafenib.Other immune-oncology drugs are also demonstrating promising results in patients with advanced HCC when compared to traditional systemic therapy.However,initial studies raised concerns that the advantages of immunotherapy might depend on the underlying liver disease,which seems to be particularly important in NAFLD-related HCC,as these tumors might not benefit from it.This article will review the mechanisms of NAFLD-related hepatocarcinogenesis,with an emphasis on its immune aspects,the efficacy of traditional systemic therapy for advanced NAFLD-related HCC,and the most recent data on the role of immunotherapy for this specific group of patients,showing that the management of this condition should be individualized and that a general recommendation cannot be made at this time.

TSC renal cystic disease is poorly understood and has no approved treatment.In a new principal cell-targeted murine model of Tsc cystic disease,the renal cystic epithelium is mostly composed of type A intercalated cells with an intact Tsc2 gene confirmed by sequencing,although these cells exhibit a Tsc-mutant disease phenotype.We used a newly derived targeted murine model in lineage tracing and extracellular vesicle(EV)characterization experiments and a cell culture model in EV characterization and cellular induction experiments to understand TSC cystogenesis.Using lineage tracing experiments,we found principal cells undergo clonal expansion but contribute very few cells to the cyst.We determined that cystic kidneys contain more interstitial EVs than noncystic kidneys,excrete fewer EVs in urine,and contain EVs in cyst fluid.Moreover,the loss of Tsc2 gene in EV-producing cells greatly changes the effect of EVs on renal tubular epithelium,such that the epithelium develops increased secretory and proliferative pathway activity.We demonstate that the mTORC1 pathway activity is independent form the EV production,and that the EV effects for a single cell line can vary significantly.TSC cystogenesis involves significant contribution from genetically intact cells conscripted to the mutant phenotype by mutant cell derived EVs.

Colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease:Can we predict risk?

The inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD),Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC),may be complicated by colorectal cancer(CRC).In a recent populationbased cohort study of 47 347 Danish patients with IBD by Tine Jess and colleagues 268 patients with UC and 70 patients with CD developed CRC during 30 years of observation.The overall risk of CRC among patients with UC and CD was comparable with that of the general population.However,patients diagnosed with UC during childhood or as adolescents,patients with long duration of disease and those with concomitant primary sclerosing cholangitis were at increased risk.In this commentary,we discuss the mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis in IBD and current investigations of genetic susceptibility in IBD patients.Further advances will depend on the cooperative work by epidemiologist and molecular geneticists in order to identify genetic polymorphisms involved in IBD-associated CRC.The ultimate goal is to incorporate genotypes and clinical parameters into a predictive model that will refine the prediction of risk for CRC in colonic IBD.The challenge will be to translate these new findings into clinical practice and to determine appropriate preventive strategies in order to avoid CRC in IBD patients.The achieved knowledge may also be relevant for other inflammation-associated cancers.

Neurological disorders including neurodegeneration(e.g.,Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease)and acute injuries(e.g.,stroke and traumatic brain injury)are the leading cause group of disability-adjusted life years and the second leading cause group of deaths.Different to other tissues,the adult brain retains only a very limited repair potential.Adult neurogenesis,the lifelong generation of new neurons,declines with age and in degenerative diseases,such as Alzheimer’s disease.Nevertheless,independently of age,the proliferation and migration of endogenous stem cells is stimulated after brain injuries and might be related to recovery processes(Adamczak et al.,2017).The limited number of endogenous stem cells during adulthood is one of the major limitations for an efficient regeneration of the injury affected brain regions.Therefore,the transplantation of neural stem or progenitor cells(NSCs/NPCs)is extensively studied in mouse models and applied in first clinical trials with the aim to replace dysfunctional or lost neural cells and thus to restore brain function.
